When We Run

Your life can change in a heartbeat.
I walked downstairs and when I came back, everyone was dead and everything was over. But I survived and I ran.

34. 34.

I sleep for a long time and when I wake I can hear my mom, and Sam snoring in their rooms and Jane in the living room. I can also hear Evan breathing deeply and shifting around in his sleep. It's cold down here and he must be freezing without any quilts or anything. I know full well I could give him a blanket from the couch, but I miss him and I've never been the most logical person in the world so I nudge him. He wakes up, rubbing his eyes sleepily.

"You're all restless." I say quietly. "You take the bed. I'll sleep on the floor."

He shakes his head, still half asleep. "We could both take the bed."

I'm kind of happy that he took the hint but I realise it's a stupid idea. "No, that's not smart-"

"Shhh." he hushes me, getting up and climbing into bed beside me. His skin is freezing cold and I can feel him gradually getting more comfortable and warm as he settles down and pulls me to him.  I relax into him, realising I've been tense before Evan was in here with me.

"This is so impossible." I whisper. "It's not fair. When I'm without you I can't stop thinking about you but when I'm with you, it's even worse."

"Who said this was up to us anyway?" he whispers back. "Who decided that we have to figure it out?"

"We do." I counter, sitting up to look at him properly. "But can't we just do it together?"

"I was thinking you'd never suggest it." he says and kisses me, sitting up too.

He pulls me onto his lap and leans against the wall so we're both comfortable and leans his forehead on mine, smiling.

"I love you." he looks at me.

I smile. "I love-"

I don't get to finish my sentence because a group of men bursts into the room and pulls me away, into the forest.
