When We Run

Your life can change in a heartbeat.
I walked downstairs and when I came back, everyone was dead and everything was over. But I survived and I ran.

26. 26.

"What time is it?" I whisper.

"I think it's three am." Evan laughs.

"Oh god." I laugh too.

We have just been here talking for hours. In the process, Evan got too warm and took his shirt off and I had to act casual but inside I was dying a little bit. No matter what situation you're in, if you're a teenage girl, you remain a teenage girl. His skin is warm and it's comforting, knowing he's there. I can hear Sam snoring in the next room and everything's so peaceful.

"Wow I have never seen you so beautiful." he says all of a sudden.

I laugh, shaking my head. "Oh yes!" I say, with mock seriousness, propping myself up on my elbows and leaning over him. "I mean, I'm here in your t-shirt that's too big for me and my hair is in the worst ponytail of all time. Just call me Kate Moss."

He grins. "Kate Moss could never pull that off. I'm serious though, you're too pretty for it to be true-"

"Oh shut up." I grin, kissing him.

He kisses me back and I can still feel him smiling. It's so weird. We're just messing around like normal teenagers, knowing that we have my mom and Jane to look after us. I can't get my head around it and that makes me realise how long it's been since I've had time to just be a real teenager.

After that, we both fall asleep suddenly. We wake up the next day at four o'clock in the afternoon. I guess we haven't slept properly for a while and it's not like we have anywhere to be.  We both groan and put our heads back down on the pillows, not wanting to wake up yet.

"Should we go and socialise?" he asks, turning his head to look at me.

I shrug, smiling. "Yeah, lets."

We get up and go out into the living room where Sam, Jane and my mom sit down on the floor, playing scrabble.

"Scrabble?" I ask as Evan sits down, leaning against the sofa. I sit in his lap and he holds me too him, smiling and kissing my cheek.

"Yes!" Jane exclaims. "This is all we had in our day!"

"You two are cute." my mom grins, nodding at Evan and I. "You both go around in a little pair, never separating. Even when Hol looks like such a mess!"

"Hey!" I protest, though we all know it's true.

We all laugh and sit there. The adults and Sam play scrabble. I talk to Sam. Evan kisses me. We all talk and laugh and smile and it's just genuinely happy and peaceful considering the messed up world we're in right now.
