When We Run

Your life can change in a heartbeat.
I walked downstairs and when I came back, everyone was dead and everything was over. But I survived and I ran.

22. 22.

I find some makeup in the pocket of my jacket that I took to school that day just in case I needed to reapply it. I apply it as best as I can without seeing what I'm doing and I take my jacket off, pulling my shirt a little lower down. I undo my hair and mess it up a bit, turning to Evan. He stands there, his arms crossed, looking sad and scared and angry.

"Is there any way I can talk you out of this?" he asks, hopefully.

I shake my head. "Where's the house?"

He motions with his head. "Through there."

I nod. "Go inside in five minutes. Do not come and rescue me. Get stuff and leave and I'll meet you back there."

He nods. "I know, I know. I love you."

"I love you too." I say, kissing him. I'm terrified but I try not to let it show. I don't want to leave him right now but I have to.

I walk through the trees until I see the house. It's huge and white and intimidating, but I walk up and knock on the door. I feel like crying but I keep a straight face, even look a little confident. The door opens and a sleazy looking middle aged man stands there, looking me up and down. I gulp but stay confident.

"Hey." I say.

He smiles a creepy smile. "Come on in."

I do. He leads me up some stairs to a bedroom. I'm kind of wanting Evan to help me, but I know I don't really want that. The bedroom is lit with a warm glow but I've never felt colder in my life. There's a bottle of wine on the side. The man pours a glass and passes it to me. I've never liked wine from the few times I've had it, but I take a sip anyway.

"What brings you here?" he asks, taking a long swig of his own wine.

I shrug, somehow managing a somewhat seductive smile. I walk over to the bed, sitting down and I keep smiling at him. He walks to the opposite side of the bed and I feel him suddenly behind me, breathing down my neck. I feel his hand snake over to my leg and I can't help a tear slipping down my cheek. I've never felt so scared and hopeless in my life. I hope he doesn't see. He moves his hands and lifts my shirt over my head, tossing it to the ground.

"Get the hell away her." I hear Evan growl and I hear a crack.

He runs around to my side of the bed and grabs my hand, pulling me along with him. I feel a grasp on my ankle and the man tries to hold me there, but Evan punches his nose again and we run and run, down the stairs and out of the front door, with the man at our feet. As we reach the door, I feel the man grab my arm again, but Evan slams the front door, trapping the man's head inside it, along with my arm, but I don't care. The man falls to the floor and we run into the forest.

I know we have to get to the car, but half way back to it, I collapse to the floor, sobbing. They are the big, uncontrollable, gasping sobs. I don't know why I'm crying exactly. I guess I'm shocked and traumatized. I'm not going to lie, what just happened was horrifying.

Here I am, in my bra and leggings and all the makeup is running down my face and I'm sobbing on the forest floor but all Evan does is kiss my forehead, shrug off his jacket and give it to me to wear. He doesn't judge me or tell me we have to leave and get to the car, even though we do. His jacket is warm and comfortable and his lips comfort me.

"You... you shouldn't have got me..." I say between sobs.

"Shhh." he says, kissing my forehead again. "You and I both know that's not true. We both know I did the right thing. Come on, let's go back to the car."

I nod and he picks me up and carries me the rest of the way. I don't care, I just rest my head on his chest and he carries me with ease. We get to the car and he lies down with me in the back seat. Sam turns around straight away.

"Is she okay?" he asks Evan.

"I'm here, you know." I say, weakly, snuffling.

"Are you okay?" he asks.

I nod, smiling at him. "Just a bit shaken up."

"Did it... happen?"

I shake my head. "Evan got there before it could."

I see Sam smile at Evan thankfully and I smile too.

"I couldn't find anything, but I got us a lot of food and drinks." Evan says. "We need to drive now, though."

Sam starts the car and starts driving. We all have some bread and water but I fall asleep as soon as I can.
