18. The Incident

                                                                        Chapter 18

'Oh, wait, I have to get something for you,' cried Jamie as they went to cross the road.

'What?' asked Abby.

'Can't say,' Jamie called as he ran back to the house. Abby smiled. He's so thoughtful. She crossed over the road and waited on the other side for Jamie to come. After ten minutes Jamie emerged from the house, grinning like crazy and patting his top shirt pocket.

'Got it Abby!' he yelled as he ran across the road and... WHAM!

A car came speeding down the road, trying to screech to halt so it wouldn't hit Jamie but it didn't work and it smashed full pelt into Jamie's stomach. With a cry of agony Jamie flew through the air and crashed down onto the floor of the road.

'JAMIE!' yelled Abby, running over. The car didn't even bother to stop but drove on. Abby reached Jamie. He was bleeding badly and already vast bruises were coming up. He lay limp, his bones cracked, his body broken.

'Jamie speak to me,' begged Abby. gently bringing his head up to rest on her knee. Jamie said nothing. He didn't respond just lay there, silent, a dead soul.

'No, please, no Jamie,' she cried. Then she noticed his phone hanging out of his jean pocket. Quickly she dialled 999 and asked for an ambulance. Next, she called Linda Macore, telling her to come down the road to where Jamie lay. It was five minutes before Linda came out. She rushed over and cried out in sorrow.

'NO!' she bellowed, her glistening tears landing on Jamie's punctured stomach. Abby was crying too, her silent tears dripping off her face and onto Jamie's face. The siren of an ambulance could be heard wailing down the road and it came screeching to a halt. Police cars followed. Men came pouring out of the vehicles.

'How long has he been laying here for?' asked one.

'How did this happen?' asked another but Abby ignored them all. She was just focusing on the men who were carrying Jamie away on a stretcher.

'No!' she cried, struggling through the surge of people.

'I need to come with!' The men looked at her.

'Alright, since you were at the crime scene, you can come with.' She thanked them and climbed into the back of the ambulance. A police man joined them. The ambulance drove off, sirens blaring loudly. Abby just sat, in the back, staring at Jamie with a lost look in her eyes.
