27. Outside of English Class

Abby stood outside of Mr Birke's class with her arms folded and a very miserable attitude. She had no idea what she'd done, she'd simply spoken to him like he wanted her to! Now where was she? Outside in some form of disgrace! Honestly, do teachers not understand the concept of popularity? She wished at that moment that when she moved, she hadn't pleaded her Dad to let her stay at the school she went to back when they hadn't moved. If she had gone to a different school she would probably be in the classroom secretly eating strawberry laces and texting her friends on her phone under the desk. Last year she'd been in Set Two, now she was in Set One it was a lot harder! A few people passed her, some with green faces, others clutching their arms and wincing in pain and some with badges around their necks. Ah, messengers. Only the good kids got to be a messenger and no one saw Abby as a good kid. She got a couple of sneers from them as well which she found quite rude. The door behind her opened and Mr Birke came storming out. The veins on his neck were standing out and pulsing vividly.

'Who do you think you are young lady?'

'I'm Abby Finch sir.' He growled and Abby was reminded of a ferocious dog. He was a ferocious dog, with a beer gut and garlic breath.

'Now don't be smart with me young lady! How dare you embarrass me in front of my class! You cannot just answer back and act like you do not care! School is important, you have your GSCE options next year! Are you just going to answer back at your career advisor? No! So stop fooling around and get on with the task!' Abby checked her watch.

'But sir there's only two minutes left of the lesson.'

'The bell is for me not for you!' roared Mr Birke and stormed inside, followed by a stroppy Abby.
