8. Jamie Finds Out

                                                                                Chapter 8

Abby was growing tired of waiting for Jamie. She was slightly surprised her Dad hadn't come out to find her already and talk to her. But, then again, he probably thought she was trying to make sense and get over what he'd said. When Abby kept pestering her Dad to tell her, she hadn't expected that kind of story. Abby was still startled by it and as she waited impatiently for Jamie to appear, she began to realise why her Dad was so reluctant to tell the story.

'My, Abby, has the greenhouse turned into our special meeting place or something?' yelled a voice and Abby looked down to find Jamie standing smiling in his garden.

'Come up. I found something out,' she called and Jamie frowned.

'Alright, wait one moment,' he yelled back and darted up his shed, onto the fence and over onto the roof of the greenhouse.

'What did you find out?' he asked, pushing his floppy brown fringe out his eyes. Abby took a deep breath, sighed, then told him everything. About the sea and their parents drowning and their dads vowing to never see each other again. By the time she had finished, Jamie was in total shock. He didn't say anything, just sat there staring at Abby with a look as if to say "are you serious?"

'I know, it's awful isn't it? I never expected that much of a story.' She looked at Jamie. There was silence for a moment.

'That explains why your Dad is so angry at my family. And why my Dad hates your Dad.'

'It's awful, isn't it, having our two families in conflict. But, it was your Dad's fault. He should apologise.' Jamie looked outraged.

'What? My Dad apologise? My mum was just being adventurous and your mum was being a wimp not wanting to swim out any further.' Abby felt like she'd been punched in the stomach.

'HOW DARE YOU CALL MY MUM A WIMP! YOUR MUM WILL ALWAYS AN IDIOT BECAUSE SHE DROWNED BOTH OF THEM!' Then Abby, in all her rage, slapped Jamie and slid off the greenhouse before he could slap her back.
