4. Breakfast Table Coversation

                                                                                 Chapter 4

Abby sat with her dad at the dinner table. It was silent. Abby hated silence.

'Look, Dad, I'm sorry,' said Abby, spreading butter on her burnt toast. Her Dad sighed heavily.

'No, Abby, I should be sorry.'

'Why? I was the one writing messages at night.' Abby dipped her knife into the butter, out onto the toast. In. Out. In. Out.

'No, I should have told you earlier.'

'Told me what earlier?' In. Out. In. Out.

'Those people next door, the Brands, they're trouble.'

'What do you mean trouble? Dad, they're dog didn't pee on the grass. It was dew.' In. Out. In. Out.

'I know, well, I don't, but still. Abby, the Brands are trouble in a very bad way. The kids steal, the dad is an alcoholic and their mum died-' He stopped short.

'Look, Dad, I know they might seem like trouble but Jamie's nice.' In. Out. In. Out.

'I don't care. Don't talk to them at all. They're nuisances.'

'Dad, that's harsh.' In. Out. In. Out.

'NO IT'S NOT!' yelled her dad. Abby fell silent. In. Out. In. Out.

'Abby, I'm sorry.'

'It's OK.' In. Out. In. Out.

'I know your annoyed.'

'No I'm not.' In. Out. In. Out.

'Yes you are, just look at your toast.' Abby looked. She had piled a mountain of butter on top.

'Oops,' said Abby and threw it in the bin.

'What did you say they're surnames were again?' she asked quizzically.

'The Brands.' The Brands thought Abby. Why does that sound familiar?
