More Than This

Haven't you ever felt like there has to be more? Like there's more out there, just beyond your grasp, if you could only get to it?

1. More Than This

"Haven't you ever felt like there has to be more? Like there's more out there somewhere, just beyond your grasp, if you could only get to it?"
Peter gritted his teeth angrily, doing his best not to snap. "Yes, Anastasia. For example, I know there's more out there when you place an entire bowl of granola in front of me and I'm aware that whipped cream exists."
Peter looked to see Anastasia scowling up at him. "That's not even funny, Peter. Concentrate or you'll fall."
Satisfied, he closed his eyes again and did his best to focus.
He'd been unfortunate enough to land with Anastasia as his teacher at the start of the year. She was the youngest of the instructors, and yet by far the harshest. She never let him eat anything that came in a package, much less if the word 'calorie' was involved.
They had been going at this flying lesson for two whole hours, and Peter's head was pounding from all the philosophical nonsense she was throwing at him, trying to get him to rise higher than his standard two meters. Obviously, it wasn't paying off.
"Alright," she huffed. "Picture it like this: you're on a cliff. Standing right on the edge. You take a peek over the side, and there's nothing but emptiness. Suddenly, someone–" she grinned, "let's say ME, pushes you over before you can do anything. And you're falling, falling, falling... What do you do?"
Peter forced himself to picture the scene in his mind. He could feel the wind tearing at his clothes, his hair, his face, whistling violently, almost as if laughing at his cold fate.
He landed with an sickening crack.
Rubbing his ankle in agony, he looked up at Anastasia and growled, "Want a teaching lesson?"
