The 64th Annual Hunger Games.

In Panem there's a game. It's not a pleasant game, it's just sick.
Children are chosen to fight to the death. Killing each other for the prize to be a victor.
Becoming a victor means you are bathed in riches and are made famous throughout all of Panem. I come from District 1 and were one of the richest districts. We're also trained in the art of survival, I am actually quite skilled with knives.
In my district it's supposed to be an honour to compete in the games but in reality I am completely terrified to ever have to enter the arena.
My father once won the games and he has set a bunch of rules for me if I ever do...one of them is to not fall for any of the other tributes.

And that's exactly why I am screwed.

3. Reaping Day.

Imogen's P.O.V

I woke up with a huge knot in my stomach. Today was reaping day. Everyone thought it was an honour to represent our District in the games but I am absolutely terrified. I knew I was trained but others can always be stronger, faster, better. I slipped on the dress my mother had left for me. It was a strapless red dress that reached my knees. I slipped it on and twirled in front of my mirror. I fixed my hair into a pretty bun and put on my favourite black flats. I walked down the stairs slowly and into my fathers arms. He pulled me into a hug.
"You ready?" he asked. I nodded briefly.
"Good luck," he winked. We walked outside together and I met Luke who was already in line. They stabbed my finger and pressed my blood on the paper. Even though I had done that for 4 years already it still tingled and hurt. Luke gave me a weak smile, I knew he was also nervous. I walked over to the 16 year old girls. When everyone was ready I heard a familiar Capitol accent. Destiny the Capitol guide for our district stood upon the stage. She was at the reaping every year. We watched the Capitol's video which I practically knew of by heart. It finally ended and my heart began to race. This was it.

"The time has come to select one courageous man and woman, for the honour of representing District 1 in the annual hunger games!" Destiny smiled. She had her usually painfully blue hair and blue make up, which seemed to have made a storm around her eye. Destiny usually wore lots or bright colours but today she was wearing a metallic silver dress with hundreds of sparkly sequins.
"Alright ladies first," she said excitedly. She plunged her hand into the bowl of names and swished around. I saw her long finger nails scrape around for a name. She brought the paper to the microphone and announced.

Imogen Henderson

I stood numb while everyone watched me. I was standing on the stage beside Destiny. The smell of her perfume was overwhelming. I was using all my strength not to collapse and start crying. I stared at the sea of faces.
"A round of applause please!" Destiny said. But nobody clapped, nobody ever did. There were some sick people grinning. Those were the people that bet.
"Now gentlemen," she said plunging her hand into the other bowl. I heard her announce the boy tribute and my face fell. The odds were certainly not in my favour. It was my best friend, the person I trusted most in the world, it was Luke.

We had known each other since we were four years old, training in the fake arena together. I trusted Luke with my life and he always knew how to make me smile. He stumbled onto the stage with a sorry look in his eyes. Destiny said a few more words.
"And may the odds be ever in your favour," she said before whisking us off the stage. Into the arms of the Peacekeepers.

They led us into separated rooms. Completely white with no windows. The door opened and my mother and father came in. They were both trying to stay strong but I saw my mother was heart broken.
"If your going to come home, you need to follow my rules ok?" my father explained. After I turned 12 and attended my first reaping, my father had gone home to write a bunch of rules. Basing them on how he won the games. There were a lot of them but he had drilled them in my mind so I wouldn't forget.
"Now they said  I couldn't be your mentor because it would be unfair, so good luck I love you so much," he said. I collapsed into their arms and hugged them till the Peacekeepers returned. I sat in silence again holding back the tears. The door opened again and Luke walked in.

"Hey," he whispered giving me a hug. I began to sob into his shoulder and I could feel him shaking.
"Your going to win this Imogen! I know that. Make District 1 proud," he said. I frowned understanding what he was saying. Was my best friend going to die for me?
"What about you?!" I asked worried. He shrugged while shaking his head. The Peacekeepers came in again this time followed by Destiny.
"Come along now, I am sure your both excited to meet you mentor," she exclaimed with fake enthusiasm.
