My Friend Marcel

Annie's dad has moved around a lot, and she has never been really able to make many friends. Finally her dad gets a steady job in a tiny town outside Cheshire, named Holmes Chapel. When Annie starts a new school year at Holmes Chapel Public High School, she meets a nerdy boy named Marcel Styles. As she gets to know him better, she realizes that he's not the geek everyone thinks he is. Annie gets Marcel to open up and become himself, and they become fast friends. But soon, Marcel finds himself falling for his friend...what will happen when her biggest secret is revealed? Will Marcel still like her? Or will this secret tear Annie and him apart...forever?

19. Everything always goes wrong for me

No, no, no…this can’t be happening, this can’t be happening…. I ran down the hall way and out the huge double doors, and kept running down the road, until I reached the small woods by the river near my house. “Annie! Annie, wait!” I felt Harry grab my arm, and I whirled around, pulling away from him.

“Leave me alone, Marcel!” I yelled.

“Annie, please, just listen! It’s not what you think!”

“Oh, I think I know what happened! You told Allie, didn’t you? DIDN’T YOU?!” Harry was quiet for a minute, and looked down in shame.

“Not on purpose… Annie—“

“No! I trusted you! You said you wouldn’t tell! You promised!” I screamed. I punched his chest hard, and he didn’t do anything. He didn’t even move. That made me even angrier, and I began flailing against him, punching him in the chest again and again and again. “You said you wouldn’t tell!” Punch. “You promised!” Punch, PUNCH. “I trusted you!” Slap, slap, punch! He just stood there, taking all of my fury, and soon I grew tired. I collapsed on the ground, and began to cry harder than I ever had before. I felt Harry’s warm arms surround me, and he rocked me back and forth, as I sobbed into his shirt. “You broke your promise, Harry…” I sniffed. “You told! I trusted you…You said that it would be our little secret.” I pulled away from him fast. “I don’t have anyone now.”

“You have the boys and Hannah… You have your father and Danny…” Harry touched my face and I turned away. He swallowed hard. “You have me.”

“No, I don’t.” I stood. “You think that Louis and Zayn and Liam and Niall and Hannah are going to want to hang out with me after what I did? After who I hurt?” I stepped away from Harry as he tried to comfort me. “And my father couldn’t even look at me after what happened. If Danny finds out, I will never be able to see him again.” I shook my head, and turned away.

“Please don’t go, Annie.” I heard Harry say softly behind me. “I need you. Please…You're my best friend…and I…I really like you, Annie! There, I said it. Please, Annie. Don’t leave me.”

“I have to.” I said over my shoulder, tears pooling in my eyes again. “I can’t let anyone else in. You’ve proven that, Harry. People can’t be trusted. And I don’t need friends.” I began to walk away, then stopped at the entrance to the small woods, and turned around once more. “What’s worse, Harry…I really liked you too.” I scoffed and shook my head. “Yet another dumb mistake on my part. Like I said, Harry…I don’t fall for any one. It’s too painful.” I sighed.

“Annie…” His voice was choked, like he was holding back tears. “Please, let me explain…”

“See ya around, Marcel.” I walked away from him, tears running down my face.

Soon I got home, and immediately ran up to my room. I threw myself onto my bed and started to sob. I hugged my teddy bear to my chest, and lay on my bed for hours. Finally, my father knocked on my door. “Come in.” I said, sitting up and wiping my face free of tears. My dad walked in and sat on my bed.

“Are you okay, Annie?” He asked.

“Yeah, I’m just having really bad cramps.” I lied.

“Oh.” My father nodded. “Well, I just wanted to tell you that I got a promotion.”

“Wow, dad, really?” I tried to inject some sort of enthusiasm into my voice. “That’s great! Good job.”

“There’s a catch.” Dad sighed. “We have to go to the main offices. In London.” My heart dropped further than it had ever dropped before.

“We’re moving?” I whispered.

“Yes.” Dad looked down as if he was ashamed.

“But…But we just got here…” I said.

“I’m sorry, Annie. I know that you have a lot of friends here. But we have to go to London. I can’t miss this opportunity.” Dad stood, and walked to my door. “We’re leaving at the end of the week.”

“So soon?” I whispered.

“We have to get there as soon as possible. I’m sorry, pumpkin.”

“It’s okay. I’ll start packing.” As soon as Dad left, closing the door behind him, I threw myself on the bed and began crying harder than I ever had before. Am I just a punching bag? Really? Was I put on this earth simply because God needed someone to torture? Why does this only happen to me?
