2. Chapter 2

I stiffened as Chief Masterson put his hand on my back to guide me in. It doesn't matter who you are, ever since the infection broke out, don't touch me, don't sneak up on me, or I'll hurt you.

We walked into another door and I saw at least 20 people--correction at least 20 teenagers. They all stared at me. Well, I would stare too if I saw a barefoot girl wearing a ripped and tattered tanktop and jeans, who's hair was a rat's nest, because she hadn't had a brush in 3 weeks, or slept in a year and a half.

I look around, I saw at least twelve guys and eight girls.

I saw a guy I went to school with, I recognized his brown cropped hair.

"Janet, will you show this young lady where to get some fresh clothes to wear?" Chief Masterson asked.

"Sure," She said. "Come on,"

I followed her to the back of the room, and out another door.

"Bathroom is down the hall," She pointed to the left. "And, clothing storage is in here," She said and walked into another room. "What size are you? Mmm, never mind, you're probably a small or extra small."

"Yeah," I said.

"Sweat pants or jeans?" She asked looking in a shelf of clothes.

"Either one." I said.

She handed me a pair of green camouflage jeans, and a black tank top.

"Thanks," I said.

"No problem, we don't usually get that many new people," She said.

"Makes sense, I haven't met another living person since my Aunt Maryann, but she kinda disowned me after my family was infected."

"That sucks, my family was infected too," She said, bowing her head.

"I'm sorry," I said.

"It's fine, almost everyone is a goner now,"

"Got that right," I said. "I'm gonna go change," I said walking toward the bathroom.

"Can you find your way back?" She asked.

I nodded.

"'Kay, see 'ya in a bit," she said.

I walked down the hall to the bathroom with the clothes in my hands.

I set my clothes next to the sink, and started to wash my face.

After I finished, I noticed a rack of towels and smiled when I saw that there was a shower in here.

I turned the water on and stripped off my clothes and stepped in. The water felt so good on my skin, I hadn't had a proper shower in months.

Once I was clean and had put on the clothes Janet had gotten for me, I pulled my blonde hair into a ponytail.

"Finally," I mumbled. "I might actually sleep tonight."

I walked back into the room where everybody was.

Not that many people noticed me, which was fine by me. I walked to the back corner of the room and sat down on the floor.

I hugged my knees to my chest and laid my head on my knees.

"Excuse me, miss?" I looked up and saw Chief Masterson.

"Yes?" I asked.

"Would you come with me please?"

"Sure," I said. He offered his hand, but I stood up on my own.

I followed him out of the room, and into a kitchen.

"Would you like anything to drink, or eat?"

"Just some water, please," I said.

He walked over to a cabinet and pulled out a canteen. "So how long have you been out on your own?"

"About a year,"

"By yourself?"

"Pretty much," I said.

"Hmm," He said and walked over to the fridge.

I stiffened as I heard the door open and softly click shut behind me.

Someone put their hand on my shoulder, I'm sure it was meant as a warm and friendly gesture, but all I could think was what touched me? Kill it! As soon as the Chief turned around, I grabbed the person's wrist and flipped whoever it was over my shoulder.

"Ethan, are you okay?" The Chief asked.

"Fine," He groaned.

"Sorry, I should have told you not to sneak up on this one, she sent me flying earlier when I found her," Chief said.

"You shouldn't really touch me, either." I said.

"Thanks for warning me," He scoweld.

Chief handed me the canteen and I took a sip, as he helped Ethan up.

"Ethan, would you show her around for me please? I have important work to finish," He said.

"Sure," He said looking at me. "Come on,"
