The Endless Chain

This story is a romantic short story/play. It's about love, the dangers of it and how it can effect everyone. Oh, and it's in reverse order (There are 10 chapters). I used this as a final project for my English class and received an A on it. Apparently it was one of the best stories my teacher had ever read. Let's see if he's right...

5. Chapter 5

Robert Hall, 7th Floor, Room 716, May 10th, 2013

I watched as Keith slowly shut the door. His facial features seemed to be more defined when the only light source in the room was coming from a lamp in the opposite corner of the room. He turned on the light next to the door and walked back to his bed and hopped up. I was sitting on his roommate George’s bed while Paul was sprawled out on the crème colored rug, lying on his back.

“Why am I here again?” Paul asked, turning from side to side out of pure boredom.

“I told you in the group text. Do you not read Paul? We’re having a bro sesh.” Keith answered while he took off his jacket, exposing a blue honors college T-Shirt and his long arms.

“In his defense, you didn’t tell us what this meeting is about.” I said, now lying down on George’s comforters. It was enjoyable to look at the different posters Keith had on his wall. One was a Giants poster with Eli Manning on it. Of course, being an Eagles fan, I wanted to burn that poster. Burned it until he the paper shriveled up and crinkled up to a little black speck.

“I couldn’t give out any classified information over the phone. This needs to be done in person.” Keith said while making air quote gestures with his hands when he said classified.

Paul and I both sat up, intrigued at the possible danger element of this information that could potentially be revealed to us.

“Well gentleman, now that I have your undivided attention.” Keith said, staring at some blank space in the wall above me. “I have information that both of you will be interested in. And I believe you have some info that you would like to reveal as well Tony.” He looked at me now, like he was going to force the information out just by staring at me.

“I’m not sure what you’re talking about. But it seems like you are Mr. All knowing at the moment. So why don’t you just share whatever you were going to share with us, so we can get on our merry ways. I do have English posts due in a few hours.” I said, innocently enough where it wasn’t obvious that I knew what he was talking about.

Keith looked at me with his blue eyes and then looked at Paul. “Earlier today I was in Kelly with Ashley.” I suddenly found myself becoming more attentive to what Keith was saying. Keith continued, “We were working on math together when she told me something…”

My heart sank a little. I knew what it was. I was able to pick up on hints from she had told me with our lunches together at the Dining Hall. That and the way she acted was another giveaway. Keith could see my facial expression change. He knew that I had figured it out now. But he had to say it anyway, so that Paul could know.

For some reason, I found myself saying what I thought it was, as Keith was telling Paul.

“She told me that…” Keith said as I interrupted him.

“She’s bisexual…” I blurted out.

Keith looked at me. And he stared. Was I right or was I wrong? I thought I was right…but he just kept staring.

Paul broke the awkward silence, “She’s bi?”

Keith opened his mouth. I think this was more difficult for him then he had anticipated; which is quite a surprise because the only word he needed to say was yes. “No….she’s not…” He trailed off.

Paul stood up with his pink shorts and tank top. “I thought she was a lesbian. Good work Tony, you fell for a lesbian.” He started laughing hysterically. I just begrudgingly stared at him. If only I had something to throw at him to shut him up.

“Will you shut up and let me talk Paul.” He snapped, after about a minute of Paul laughing. Paul quieted down. “Good. Paul, you’re a moron. She’s not a lesbian.”

I let out a sigh of relief. “Thank god.” I gave the middle finger to Paul and he sat back down. “Then what did Ashley tell you?” I asked.

Keith put his hands over his eyes and slid them down his face, rubbing his hands over his cheeks a couple of times. “This is going to be more difficult than I thought.” He took a deep breath and then exhaled. “Ashley told me that she liked me.” He closed his eyes as he said this and then squinted and opened one eye to catch my reaction.

I just sat there though, stunned at the thought of Ashley liking someone else. Before, I thought I had a somewhat decent chance at winning her heart. Maybe it wasn’t best of chances, but it was a chance nonetheless. Now I felt that there was no hope left for me. So many thoughts were rushing through my mind. “What…what did you tell her?” The words came stuttering out of my mouth.

“I told her what I needed to tell her…the truth.” Keith said.

“Which is?” I said, wanting Keith to elaborate a little, so I could get a better understanding of what kind of a chance I had left with her.

“I said I wasn’t interested in her and that I liked Rebecca. Also, speaking of Rebecca… Ashley told me that Rebecca has a crush on you.” Keith pointed in my direction.

“Me?” I sat for a little. It was all coming together now. “Oh my god. That makes sense as to why Sam asked me what I thought of Rebecca the other day at the Dining Hall.” I took a sip from my water bottle.

“That reminds me. I think there’s something you should tell Paul.” Keith said.

“What do I need to know? Is it about Sam?” Paul started to get a little angry.

“Yesterday at the Dining Hall…Sam…your new girlfriend…Um…” I wasn’t sure how to put it in words without being completely blunt about it. “She…told me she liked me.” I gave up in trying to find another way to put it.

Paul took a big gulp from his cup that had beer in it. “So?” He took another gulp.

“I thought you might want to know.” I ran my hands through my long black hair.

“Well… I guess it depends on what you told her. And when she told you she liked you.” Paul said, finishing his cup of beer and exhaling loudly.

I started to explain, “It was yesterday at the Dining Hall, I don’t know the exact time, but it was around lunch and I just told her that I liked Ashley, so it wouldn’t work between her and I because my mind would be elsewhere.”

“Well, I guess that’s nice to know. But it isn’t that important… and at least we’re together.” Paul said while shrugging.

“Funny how the girls are zero for two so far.”  Keith said, attempting to lighten the mood.

“Don’t jinx us, you moron.” I said jokingly back to Keith.

“Well, we’re off to a great start. One for one baby!” Paul said, raising his empty cup, and then putting it up against his mouth before realizing that he was out of beer.

“Can we start drinking now?” I asked Keith.

“I already started!” Paul smiled, pulled a Miller Lite out of his pocket and began to pour it into his cup.

Keith jumped off his bed and ducked under his bed to get to his safe. He typed in the combination and pulled out a bottle of whiskey. “Let’s get weird!”

There’s the Keith I have come to know and love. I smiled and jumped off George’s bed and grabbed a plastic cup. He poured me a few shots, and I started sipping. I thought of some song lyrics while I was sipping and put them in the notes section of my phone. This usually happens to me in the shower, but occasionally I come up with some genius ones that help show how I feel.

I was trying to not worry about the whole Ashley situation. I just wanted to have fun for now. She always manages to pop into my brain anyway, so it made sense to just play it off for now, have some fun with my Friday night and then worry about it later. For now, I was going to get drunk.
