1. An Unexpected Beginning

It was a cool, crisp April morning. I sat on the porch on a wooden swing, moving softly back and forth with the light breeze. It was times like this that I wanted to last forever. I seemed happiest here, just like this.

"Hey stranger," Emily, my cousin, said cheerfully. She held a pitcher of water, and began filling up the thirsty plants. I smiled while watching her, acknowledging her greeting.

She paused and watched me with a quizzical eye. "You've been so quiet here lately. Something up?" She swept a strand of light brown hair behind her ear, worry furrowed in her brow. I swallowed and shook my head.

"Nah. Need some help?" I started to rise but fell back in pain. I landed with a quiet thud on the swing again. Emily continued watering the plants, oblivious to the little pain attack I had just endured. I took a deep breath in, the air hitching in my throat.

"Nope, I got them," she smiled. I mirrored her warm grin and exhaled, the pain growing in my lower half. I gripped the arm rest on the swing as she went back in the house, my mind racing and wandering what was wrong with me.

After a few minutes, I tried to get up again. I stood and my legs were noodles underneath me. I stumbled inside and plopped down in the arm chair beside my aunt. She looked up long enough to smile before returning her attention to Keeping Up with the Kardashians. I let out a sigh through gritted teeth.

Emily made her way into the living room and sat cross legged on the floor. She glanced over at me, this time with terror. "Sheyanna, are you okay? You look like you've seen a ghost!"

I try to laugh to break the monotony, but it comes out in a pained shriek. The pain is back and better than ever. Both Emily and Aunt Suzanne are at my knees as I double over in pain.

"Call the ambulance!" Emily tells her mother. My vision blurs in and out and I am panting through this excruciating pain.

"Breathe, Sheyanna. We're gunna get you to a doctor." She tries to soothe me. I'm in a cold sweat as I shut my eyes and see lights dancing around everywhere. I squeeze them tighter together but the lights still dance, making the pain so much worse. There's only one thing that comes to mind as I lay clinging to my legs: The party of August 2012.

  And everything goes black.
