1. Broken

I watched as he paraded down the hall with his mates, beating yet another innocent person. The teachers still see him as the perfect, defenseless student, but all the other kids in school fear the days when he comes to school in a bad mood. Today was one of those days.

Most of the kids who had a free period at this time were hiding in the lunch hall or bathrooms. I stood next to his locker, since mine was right beside his, and watched. I observed Liam's emotions as he kicked the broken kid. He hesitated to hit him and walked over backwards to the locker behind him. He watched his friends beat up the kid. Soon enough, Liam's face switched emotions and I could see him cringing. He faced the locker he had been leaning on and began pounding it.

**FLASHBACK**

"Oh, um.. Sorry, I didn't see you there love," said the kid in the plaid, buttoned up shirt, adjusting his glasses to see properly.

"Um, that's totally fine. No big deal, no harm done." I bent down to pick up the books I dropped, with him helping me pick up the larger text books.

"So where are you off to? And my name is Liam by the way," he readjusted his glasses again.

"Um, just off to first period geometry and I'm Genevieve."

He helped me with my locker and put my English book in there while I stood and watched him.

His eyes were graceful even though they were the usual brown. He had curly hair that was brown as well, but had hints of blonde in it that had a fanciful feel to them.

"Well sorry again. It was nice meet Genevieve. I'll see you around."

He hugged his own text books against his chest and walked swiftly in the other direction.

*****

That was first time we met. I remembered how later that day, when I opened my language arts text book I found a letter from Liam himself. The note had said 'Hey it's Liam, here's my number if you ever need advice, xx'. Behind it was another apology for bumping into me. I remembered the goofy smile I had when I read it, although he never did tell me how he managed to get the note in my text book so quickly.

This was around the second week of my first middle school year. Now it was my third year of high school. That was a long 5 years ago and we've been the best of friends since.. Or at least we were. His eyes were now a darker shade of brown that wasn't as mesmerizing and his hair isn't as playful anymore.

I continued watching him and noticed him crying. He was filled with guilt and didn't look like the normal Liam.
