2. How it all started

I’m going to tell my story from when I was 6 to now.

My cheerleading career all started from when I was at a Cowboys vs. 49ers football game. I was behind the 49ers cheerleaders. My mom noticed that I was cheering with them and that I was enjoying it. After the game my parents were talking about putting me in gymnastics and then cheerleading when I was a bit older. I was in gymnastics for two years.

When I turned 8 my parents put me in a cheerleading team. After four years of being on the cheer team I was the captain for three years. I was 12. My cheer coaches came by one day to talk to my parents. My coaches asked my mom and dad if I could be allowed to be on the “USA Cheerleading Competition.”

The competition was not so easy, I knew what I was putting myself through. This competition was not the only thing I was going through, my parents were going through a divorce. I had to make myself strong because I knew I was the oldest and I had 2 little sisters that looked up to me. I knew that I had to be strong because of them. I was only 12 and it was very, very hard for me to deal with both things at the same time.

Even though my parents were going through this divorce they still supported me and didn't ignore me because they knew that cheer was very important to me and I wasn't going to give up. When my parents faught, I didn't want my sisters listening and I didn't either. So what I did was call my coach she was a very close neighbor and she would take my sisters and I to the gym and practice.

After practicing for almost 6 months, it was the day, the day that I knew that if I won I would have an amazing future but if not then I always wanted to cheer and someday be a couch if I could. That morning I was a nervous wreck, my mind was everywhere.

But the time came and I was next to competing, when I saw over 500 people watching me I started getting butterflies. My coach told me before getting on stage to just think that you're in the gym practicing. I did what she told me to do. I thought that I was practicing and did it; I ended up not being so nervous and doing well.

There were 3 rounds, and I still had 2 rounds to go. I was practicing backstage, when I hear my name go up next. Round 2 was when you had a group of 4 or 5 group and you’re performing stunts and tricks. So I go up with my group get prepared to start. We started doing our stunts and trick, it took my group about 10 minutes to perform. We got done and got ready for round 3. 30 minutes later, the last round. I knew that I had to try my best.

I was performing with Chloe, my step-sister’s two best guy friends. I was up to go next. It’s finally my turn and I’m so nervous that I was going to mess up and do horrible. I performed and did amazing.  After everyone performing, it was judging time. There were about 80 to 100 girls. All the girls came up to the stage. They only called the top 20 girls, then top 10. I was in the top 10, but I knew that I wouldn't win because there were so many girls that were amazingly good and way better than me.

Finally the judges said the top 3, but they still didn’t say #1. I just look at the 8 girls and right off the bat I knew I didn’t have a chance. The main judge came up on stage with some flowers and said “The girl that I’m about to call, is amazing for only being 12. Going through some tough times with her family and still being able to practice 24/7, the judges and I are really impressive. Now that I’ve talked a lot I’m going to tell you, this girl won not only her age group 11-14 but 15-19. Her name is Hailey Smith!” the crowed started yelling and clapping.

I started crying and hugged the judge. The judge told me if I wanted to say something. I did I said to the crowed “I would like to thank my coaches, family, my sisters, and everyone around me that told me to never give up and believe in my dreams. I may only be 12 about to turn 13 but I already know what I want in my future. I have two little sisters that look up to me and for them I’m going to make them proud and also my parents. Thank you guys!” I was so excited that when I went backstage my family was right there to congratulate me. My coach pulled me aside and said to me “I’m proud of you for everything you’ve done and you are a bright little girl and you have a bright future. You have worked hard to get here and don’t let anyone tell you, you can’t do it. If you put your mind and heart to something you love you’ll do it. Just believe in yourself. I will be here for you until you don’t need me anymore.”

I went back to my family. I thought so much about what my coach had told me. I knew that from this day forward my life was going to change. The main judge and a guy came up to my parents and I. They were telling me that I got $2M for winning and I got to pick a 5, 10, or 15 year contract to cheer and dance. I picked 15 years because I knew this is what I wanted to do.

He told us that we were going to started promoting me so, I could teach class for dance and cheer. My $2M where in an account that my parents were going to give to me when I was 14 or at least old enough to save my money.
