4. Chapter 3

Audrey stood awkwardly by the door while Justin sat down on his bed. They looked at each other for a long while until he broke the silence.

"So how is Claire acting weird?" he asked. Audrey rubbed the back of her neck and turned her gaze to something other than Justin.

"Well," she started. "First she lied to me about some stuff and then we were arguing and she just left like it was planned. Like she knew we were going to fight and I was going to win or something."

Justin sighed. "Girls."

Audrey shot him a look. "Boys aren't any better."

"Justin!" Audrey spat. "Focus on the matter at hand. Not me! I shouldn't be your main focus, okay?"

Justin lied back on the bed with his hands behind his head. He rolled his eyes. "Fine. Where do you think Claire went and what do you think she's doing?" His voice was monotone and Audrey knew that he was starting to drift off into his own little world of not caring about anything.

"I don't know where she went." Audrey sat down on the floor and leaned against the door.

"Okay, then tell me what she lied to you about. Maybe that'll clear some things up."

Audrey sighed and ran her fingers through her messy red hair. "Alright." she said. "Well when you told me there was a spare bedroom downstairs, Claire said that it didn't exist. Then she said that you guys dated and eventually you started blaming everything on her and when you broke up she stayed. She also mentioned that it happened with five other girls but then she confessed she was lying."

Justin sat up. "Five?"

Audrey nodded, not meeting his gaze as she did so.

"What were the names that she mentioned, exactly?" he asked. Audrey furrowed her eyebrows, trying to remember.

"Uh, there was Eva, Logan, Kelly, Chloe, and Alex." Audrey said, giving herself a mental pat on the back for remembering the names. Justin's eyes widened.

"Oh god," he quickly got up off the bed and grabbed a shirt. As he shrugged it on, Audrey stood up.

He pushed past her out into the hallway and down the stairs. She followed but didn't know why. Justin ran all the way down to the basement and into Claire's room. When Audrey got there, she found him going through all of Claire's things.

"What are you doing?" she asked as she leaned up against the door frame. Justin glanced at her for a brief moment.

"Looking for something," he said quickly as he rummaged through Claire's things for another moment until he found what he was looking for.

It was a knife. Audrey's eyes widened. "Why would Claire have a knife?" she asked. Justin's eyes were unusually dark and she knew he was mad.

"That bitch is working for the west side." he spat and walked out into the hallway and up the stairs again. Audrey sighed before following him again.

"How do you know that for sure?"

"Because," he said. "Those names you mentioned aren't made up. Avery, Kaiden, Veronica, and Claire have run into those girls plenty of times while they were doing business related things," he trailed off as Audrey raised her eyebrows and Justin rolled his eyes. "And I've only dated one of them. Not all five."

Audrey crossed her arms. "Which one?"

"Chloe," Justin said quickly. "But that's not the point."

"Maybe it is." Audrey spat. "Maybe you just want to follow Claire because you want to see this so-called Chloe."

"I didn't even say I wanted to follow Claire!" Justin raised his voice. "And why would you care if I saw Chloe anyway?! You and I aren't dating, remember?"

Audrey's heart dropped. She knew she wasn't being fair, so she sighed. "Fine. What does the knife have to do with the west side?"

Justin paused for a moment. Probably so he wouldn't yell. "The west side favors knives as their weapons. We favor guns. That's how you tell us apart." He turned the knife over and pointed to a name engraved on it. Claire. "And this is Claire's knife because her name is engraved on it, along with W.S."

Audrey stared at the knife for a long time before she leaned against the wall. Surely Claire wouldn't be working with the west side, right? It had to be a mistake. Maybe Claire just liked having her name engraved on knives?

"Audrey," Justin waved his hands in front of her face. "Earth to Audrey."

She looked up at him and their eyes met. Audrey froze. "What?"

"You looked like you were about to cry." Justin studied her eyes for another moment before he made the brave decision to look away. Audrey took a deep breath and then tore herself away from the wall she was leaning on.

"I'm fine." she said. "It's just...I don't know why Claire would pretend to be my friend."

Justin scoffed. "Really? Sorry, that's just really pathetic. You knew that she's a bitch yet you tried to make friends with her anyway."

Audrey whirled around to face him again. "You don't have the right to tell me that I'm pathetic! I've been pathetic all my life and I've been told that I'm pathetic! I hate it! I hate it and I HATE YOU!" she yelled. "I hate you for trying to love me just so you can put me down!"

Justin stood there with no expression but Audrey knew he was surprised. She glanced at the knife in his hand and then back at Justin who'd followed her gaze to the knife. He started to shake his head slowly, and then he slowly started to hold the knife up and out of Audrey's reach.

"Give me the knife Justin!" Audrey yelled and tried to jump up and grab it but Justin placed a hand on her chest to keep her down.

"No Audrey," he said. "Calm down."

"Justin give me the knife!" she screamed. He held it up higher and she struggled more.

"NO! Calm down!"

Audrey kept trying to get the knife when her knee accidentally made contact with Justin's crotch and he fell onto his knees. He dropped the knife in the process and Audrey scrambled her way over to it. She grabbed it and for a moment she debated about doing it, but then she sliced the blade along the palm of her hand before she whipped herself around and stuck the tip of the knife into Justin's shoulder.

He yelled out and collapsed onto the ground right when Seth and Avery walked through the door. Audrey dropped onto her knees and started to cry while they ran over to Justin, who seemed to be bleeding much more than Audrey was. She took a quick look at her shaky, red hand, and then over at Justin who was being helped up by Seth.

At first, Justin looked like he was genuinely concerned for Audrey, but then all that changed when a severe shot of pain went through his arm. "You little bitch! That fucking hurt!"

Avery placed a hand on the arm of his that wasn't bleeding and whispered something into his ear before Seth took him upstairs. After they were gone, Avery looked over at Audrey.

"Come on," she said. "Let's go get you cleaned up."
