21. Chapter 20

Justin took a step towards Jesse, but Audrey stopped him. She knew that this was something she had to handle herself, and if she went down fighting, it wouldn't matter. Before she could say what she wanted to say to Jesse, Justin grabbed her arm and pulled her towards him.

"What the hell are you doing?" he whispered. "You could get killed."

Audrey held his gaze for a moment. "So what if I'm killed? I'm the one who wanted to get into this shit business and I'm the one who brought this fucker here. So if I go down, he goes down too."

Justin shook his head.

"Just trust me, please." Audrey begged, but didn't wait for an answer. Instead she leaned in and quickly placed her lips to his, pulling away not even a moment later.

She turned to her brother.

"So, are y'all done with the goodbyes? 'Cause I wanna get this started, if you don't mind." Jesse spat.

"Jesse," Audrey walked towards him and stood in front of him. There was only an inch of space between the two. "Why? Why are you doing all of this?"

Jesse held her gaze with a fierce intensity, but it was gone the minute she asked the question. He looked the same as he had when he actually loved Audrey. "What do you mean?"

"I mean," Audrey started again. "Why did this have to get ugly? When you found me after sending me off to be with Aunt Sara, you seemed so happy to see me. And then you started listening to Ian and when I killed him, you just became this monster. Why?"

Jesse frowned. "I..."

The whole room was hushed, waiting for his answer. Justin stood behind Audrey, tapping his leg nervously. Avery held on to Seth, and Ethan glared at Austin, Brandon, Veronica, Claire, and Kaiden.

"I just wanted to pick up where Ian left off, okay? I felt like if I didn't, I'd be failing him and I'd promised not to fail him." Jesse said. Audrey didn't believe it one bit.

She raised herself to her tiptoes so their eyes were level with each other. "Tell the truth."

He hesitated for a moment. And then, "Fine. You want to know? Be prepared because this is long."

Audrey fell back onto her feet and nodded. Jesse sighed.

"When I saw you again for the first time, I was so happy you couldn't even imagine. I wanted to you to stay with us, but when you refused so you could stay with all of these douche bags, I was heart broken. So, naturally, I started going along with Ian's plans. I felt only a little bit of regret whenever we did something to you guys, but as it gradually went along, I didn't feel anything.

"It was all an angry blur. And then you killed Ian and I was alone. I was lost and more angry than before. That's why Audrey. Because you left me, and then you killed my brother."

It took a minute, but Audrey managed to answer. "Jesse, you could have just told me earlier. It would've made things so much easier."

Then, she wrapped her arms around him. Jesse's body stiffened up. "Jesse, I'm sorry."

As if a miracle had occurred, Jesse hugged her back with one arm. "Thank you,"

Audrey knew that she should have been suspicious right then and there, but didn't decide that she should pull away until it was too late. Justin screamed her name just as Jesse pressed the barrel of the gun to her stomach, and pulled the trigger.

"but I'd rather be alone or dead than living like this." Jesse finished as Audrey clutched her stomach. A heavy flow of blood was coming from the area, and Audrey cried out when she fell to the ground on her knees.

From that moment on, everything was chaos. Justin ran towards Audrey, Ethan turned around and elbowed Brandon in the eye. Avery let go of Seth and threw herself at Claire. Austin and Veronica lunged towards Seth, but he grabbed Austin's arm and twisted it enough to break it, and knocked Veronica's legs out from under her so she hit the ground so hard that her nose broke.

When Justin reached Audrey, she had already lost a lot of blood. Jesse still had the gun clutched in his hand and was hovering over them.

"Audrey, stay with me. Please." Justin said softly and brought Audrey's head into his lap. She nodded.

"I-I'm trying." she replied, a trickle of blood came out of her mouth as she did so, and Justin made a sound in the back of his throat. He whipped his head up to look at Jesse. Jesse glared at him.

"You're honestly a fucking monster." Justin spat, tears falling silently down his cheeks.

Jesse took a deep breath. "I know. Which is why I did that, and which is why I'm doing this."

And then he put the gun underneath his chin, pulled the trigger, and fell to the ground. Everybody stopped what they were doing for a brief moment. Then, Austin, Brandon, Veronica, Claire, and Kaiden regrouped.

"You guys are lucky that we've decided to leave Canada completely. Good luck on your own, bastards." Austin spat, and turned around. The group glared at Justin one last time before they followed him.

It had all happened to quickly. Audrey was slowly loosing consciousness, even though she'd promised Justin that she'd stay with him. The task was hard but she didn't want to let him down.

He leaned over her. "Don't leave, don't leave, don't leave. Please don't leave."

Audrey smiled. "Even if I do, I just want you to know that I'm forever grateful for what you did."

Justin sniffled. "What did I do?"

"Well," she laughed quietly as Avery, Seth, and Ethan came over to where they were. "It's more of what you all did."

Avery knelt down and smiled. "Tell us."

"You gave me a family, a real one. And I know," Audrey paused to cough up blood. "t-that these are pretty cliche last words but I love all of you so much. Thank you for giving me something worth living for. If you guys hadn't hung around the restaurant for so long, if I hadn't waited your table, I'd be dead a long time ago. But you guys saved me, and for that, I'm grateful."

Justin shook his head. "No no no those aren't last words."

She smiled. "I love you Justin."

More head shaking, more tears. It was too much to bear. "I love you too, but we're going to love each other for a long time. Please, just please. That's all I want."

Audrey coughed up more red liquid. Justin winced. "I know, but I can't even move Justin. I want you to promise me something,"

He ran a hand along her forehead, and then through her hair. "Anything."

"I want you to stay with them. Don't leave no matter how sad you're feeling. Trust me, you'll be better as a team. That goes for you guys too." Audrey said quietly. Avery, Seth, and Ethan nodded.

"Justin," she whispered. Justin wiped his eyes.

"Find another girl who needs fixing. Fall for her, and fix her. Protect her with your life, okay? I love you."

Justin, despite telling himself he wasn't going to cry anymore, started to cry again. He shook his head one last time. "How am I supposed to do that when I couldn't even do that for you?"

"I believe in you, Justin. Don't forget our promises." Audrey whispered. "Don't forget me."

And even though everything they knew had just fallen apart, Audrey left happily, with the image of Justin's smile being the last thing she saw before everything was gone.
