One and then Two

An eight year old girl got wings. Now she's fifteen, flying at night for the thrill of it and convinced there's another like her doing the same. On her quest to find them, she must be careful not to reveal what she is.

10. Night Flight

I shrugged my flight clothes on, careful to not make too much noise. After the news story I realised how much more careful I would need to be. I definitely couldn't do anymore public displays. The floor creaked at certain points in my room and so I tread carefully on the worn carpet. My shoes were light but I felt like an elephant moving in the dead of night. I eased my window open and set a foot out. I threw myself out the window and caught myself with my wings close to the ground. I immediately shot up into the sky, climbing higher, higher, higher and then a little higher. I reached a cloud and went straight through it, loving the feeling of the water droplets on my skin. Up in the sky I felt as though I was home, as though nothing could hurt me.

I thought back to history class and Fynn asking me out, causing my already huge smile to get just that little bit wider. He made me smile and maybe that was one of the reasons I liked him so much.

I wish he could see me up here, being myself, but that could never happen. Nope. While I liked him, I couldn't trust him with my biggest secret yet. I couldn't ever trust someone with this. I let that thought wash out of my mind as I pushed on to the Bat Tunnel. The Bat Tunnel was my favourite place; situated on the top of the hill, it was silent and empty. I flew faster than ever before and when I finally reached the entrance I let myself drop like a rock, only stopping when I was an inch off the ground. I sat there, on the ground, thinking over things, for a while. A rock behind me was rather flat and so I leaned against it, closing my eyes and just letting myself unwind.

I just just worked through my day and was about to move onto how the world began when I felt a breeze tickle my face and then an object shoot by.

My senses went into overdrive and I snapped out my wings faster than I thought was possible. I would find out who the mystery flyer was, and I would find out tonight.
