What they weren't expecting was a freak car accident, and what Winter wasn't expecting was to survive--and more importantly, she wasn't expecting herself to be found. 9. 9: Scooter Braun

I sit next to Justin on the ground. Everything's okay between us, but I guess I'm still a little shocked about it all. I mean, my parents died, and I got saved by the Justin Bieber, who's supposed to be dead. That's a little weird, isn't it?

"So, you're not dead." I say.

"Yes, we've established that I'm perfectly alive and healthy." he says, his gaze pointed towards the ground. I frown.

"Why did you do it? Why did you ruin everybody's life? Well, except for mine, you made my life a million times better."

He smiles. "I was falling apart. The fame was getting to my head and I wanted it to be over with."

"So...you faked your own death?" I ask. Justin nods. "What about...all your friends, and...and like Selena and stuff?"

Instead of yelling at me like I thought he would, he just shrugs. "Oh, that was all an act. I hated every second of it."

I want to comfort him, but I don't know how. "What about the fans?" I ask. Justin's head snaps up and he looks at me with glossy eyes.

"I regret leaving them every day," he says. "But I regret coming into their lives, too. If I was never famous, none of this would have happened and they wouldn't be crying right now. I mean, they usually cry when they see me, but this is different. I'm not there for them." He sounds like he's about to cry himself, but he just turns his head.

"Have you ever thought about making a comeback? I know it would freak everybody out but they would understand, right?" I ask. Justin shakes his head.

"I've thought about that every day. But I'll never do it."

"Were you talking to Scooter on the phone the other day?"

Justin nods. "Yeah, he wants me to make a comeback, but--" He is interrupted by Cathryn yelling up the stairs that someone his here to see him. He sighs and gets up. "Speak of the devil."

"Scooter is here?" I get up as well. Justin pushes past me.

"How else would I get money and hair gel?" He laughs. "Yes he's here. I want you to meet him."

I furrow my eyebrows but follow him down the stairs anyways. "But wasn't he just in L.A.?"

As Justin reaches the bottom step he shakes his head. "Pre-recorded. I helped him with it."

"Oh," I say and follow him into the living room. Scooter sits on the couch in front of us, and Cathryn is nowhere to be seen. I awkwardly meet Scooter's gaze and I feel as if I should say something, but Justin does it before I can.

"Uh," he says. "Scooter this is Winter. Winter, Scooter."

I don't know why I'm not moving to shake his outstretched hand. Is it because I'm in awe? Why would I be? I'm not in awe at Justin Bieber who is standing right next to me, but I am in awe at Scooter Braun.

"Hi Winter," Scooter says. "Nice to meet you."

"Hi." I squeak. He turns to Justin.

"Is there a reason she's down here?" Scooter asks as if I'm not standing right in front of him. It seems rude but I don't do anything about it.

Justin crosses his arms. "She's my friend. And I want her to convince you that I'm not making a comeback."

All eyes are on me now. I open my mouth but nothing comes out. Scooter raises an eyebrow at Justin.

"She doesn't have much to say," he says. "Does this mean she wants you to make a comeback?"

I shake my head. "Uh, sir, if you'll just listen to Justin," I say quietly. "We both think it wouldn't be such a good idea--"

"And why is that?" Scooter gets up. "This will be the most amazing comeback the world has ever seen. You'll be more famous than before, you'll have more money than anybody in the whole world, we'll finish your album and you'll go on tour. Isn't that what you love to do?"

Justin shakes his head. "You don't get it! I don't like being famous, and I don't like the money! Most importantly, I hate the fake relationships and fake friends that supposedly boost my rep. I only did it for the fans and now that I'm gone do you think they'll understand why I did it? No, they won't. So let's just leave it at that and you can go boost The Wanted's rep or something."

"Nobody wants The Wanted!" Scooter yells, and I would have laughed under normal circumstances, but I don't. "They want you!"

Suddenly Cathryn's head pokes through the doorway. We all look at her. "Everything alright?" she asks. Scooter and Justin both nod and I smile. She smiles back and then leaves again.

"Winter," Justin says. "Tell him to leave."

I look at him for a long time and our eyes meet. The look in his is basically pleading me to tell Scooter to go away, but I just can't do it. Some part of me agrees with Scooter. "No." I say. "How about we make a deal?"

They both raise their eyebrows.

"Scooter," I say, turning to him. "Would you agree to giving Justin two weeks to think this over?" I don't know what I'm saying, but it just keeps pouring out of my mouth. "And if he decides that he's completely happy with the quiet life, then he doesn't have to make a comeback. But if, after the two weeks, he wants to make a comeback then you can bring him to L.A. and do your thing."

Scooter nods. "I think that's fair." He walks over to Justin and holds out his hand. Justin reluctantly shakes it. "It's a deal," Scooter says, walking to the door. "You have exactly two weeks. I will call you when time's up."

But before he walks out the door, Justin says, "Wait." Scooter and I both stare at him expectantly. Justin takes a deep breath. "If I decide to make a comeback," he says. "I want to bring Winter with me."

"Justin, I--" I start to say but he holds his hand up to silence me. He stares at Scooter.

"Do we have a deal?" Justin asks him. Scooter eyes him for a moment and then nods.

"Yes," he says. "I hope you choose wisely." And then he walks into the hallway, out of our sight. I feel so overwhelmed that I feel the need to sit down, but I can't. Justin glances at me.

"I'm not going to make a comeback," he says cautiously. "But if I did, would you be okay with coming with me? Back into the real world?"

I smile at him. "Yes," I lie. "That would be really cool."
