Enter the world of Tye. The Fall has devastated much of the world as we know it but Tye knows nothing else. He and his best friend Eeli are ready to leave their home as soon as they reach thirteen years so that they can be off on their own and be who they want to be and do what they want to do. At last.

Tye and Eeli could never have imagined how dangerous the real world was going to be.

“We’re closer than I fort.” Phee says as we settle down fer the nite in front’a the fire. We ain’t seen a village since lunch time.

“How far?” I ask.

“If we keep going we could be there by . . .” He stops to fink fer a moment. “Not tomorrow but the next day maybe. If we git up an go an don’t stop in the mornin.”

Eeli’s noddin. “Sounds like a plan. I just wanna git there now.”

“You were more than happy playin dress up yesterday.”

“You dunno, Tye. They blackmailed me wiff pretty dresses.” She unties her hair which she called a plat when I asked.

“You’ll git to wear a hundred dresses wiff Wren Song, stoopid.”

“I know but that was happenin rite then.” She brushes her hair thru her fingers an it comes out in tiny waves like I ain’t ever seen.

I larf. “Yer hair’s weird now.”

She picks some up an brings it close to her face an her eyebrows come together. “Oh great.”

Phee’s the first to sleep an Eeli huddles next to me, our legs pressin up against each other.

“I bin meanin to ask you about Lacey.”

“What about her?” We’re both starin into the fire an not at each other.

“Did you like her?”

“Yeah she was alrite I suppose.”

“No, I mean, like her, like her.” She tucks her big hair behind her ear like she did back in Croftford an my stomak squirms. “Cause you can tell me you know. I won’t make fun.”

I chuckle. “I don’t believe you. You always make fun’a me.”

“Tye.” She takes my hand. “I won’t.”

I take a deep breath before speakin. “No. I dint like her, like her. She was too . . . She stared at me too much. She was sweet tho weren’t she?”

“Very.” Eeli nods. “I fort you would’a liked her.”

I shrug. “Well did Phee like her?”

“Like he even noticed her! Nah. She was too busy lookin at you. She dint speak to him at all.”

“Why did you want me to like her?”

“Huh?”

“Come on, Ee. You wanted me to like her.”

“No. I dint. I really dint. But she was sweet an lovely an I fort you’d go fer that.”

“You dint want me to like her?” I feel my face screw up.

She starts playin wiff the bracelet on my wrist that she made all that time ago. I’ve bin wearin it so long that I don’t even notice it no more.

“Why not?”

“I don’t want you goin nowhere.”

“Like I was gonna stay in that house wiff those people! They wanted me gone before dinner. The only reason we stayed was cause they liked you an Phee. An anyway, I told you. I ain’t goin nowhere.”

“Not yet.”

“No, not yet. I couldn’t live in the middle of nowhere anyhow.”

We’re quiet fer a moment an watch as Nimmo’s ears twitch as he dreams.

I have to skwash all the squeezin in my stomak to speak again. “I bin meanin to ask you about Phee.”

I can see her blushin in the lite of the fire an she won’t meet my eye.

“What about him?”

“Don’t lie to me, Eeli. You like him. Don’t cha?”

“I dunno.” She shrugs. “That’s the honest truth. It’s amazin to talk to someone who don’t know me. But it’s not like talkin to you. It’s harder. But that’s fun sometimes.”

I nod, my heart steadin at her words. I grin at her.

She looks at me all soft smiles, so familiar I could pick her outta a line up blindfolded just usin my hands. “Tye, why dint you want me to like him?”

I huff a little larf. “I don’t want you goin nowhere.”

She skweezes my hand. “I ain’t goin nowhere wiffout you, stoopid.”

“Not yet.”

“Not yet.”
