Enter the world of Tye. The Fall has devastated much of the world as we know it but Tye knows nothing else. He and his best friend Eeli are ready to leave their home as soon as they reach thirteen years so that they can be off on their own and be who they want to be and do what they want to do. At last.

Tye and Eeli could never have imagined how dangerous the real world was going to be.

I’m givin the room a once over, makin sure I ain’t let anyfink on the floor, when Lacey appears in the doorframe, different dress from yesterday an different hair do.

“Whatcha doin, Lacey? You should be sleepin. It’s only just sunrise.”

“I wanted to say goodbye.”

“You dint have to. We’re just gonna git out yer parents’ hair.”

I go to walk down the corridor but she grabs my arms and pulls me back.

“I’m glad you came,” she says.

“I wish I could say the same.”

“It’s okay. My parents are stuck in their ways. That isn’t your fault. I was talking to Art last nite and he told me about all the wonderful stories you told him yesterday afternoon. I wish I had stories like that.”

“You will.” I brush her hand off my arm an take it in my own. “Yer special, Lacey White, look at ya. You don’t need this house. You an yer brother could leave you know?”

She shakes her head. “Not yet. Maybe someday.”

“It’s a different world out there than yer parents fink. It ain’t like it used to be.”

She nods. “Be careful out there, Tye.”

“Me?” I chuckle. “I was born out there. Me an Eeli an Phee were made fer this, we’ll be fine.”

She throws her arms around me, almost nockin me to the ground. She’s not as bony as Eeli an I guess this is how it should feel to hug Eeli too. If Eeli had eaten three square meals every day of her life. The Whites were the only people I know who’d done that.

I have to prize her off me an she sniffs, tears wellin in her eyes.

“What is is?”

“I’ll never see you again.”

I smile. “You only just met me yesterday.”

“You’re the only person who’s ever treated me like an equal. Like I’m not a child.”

“Yer only a year youngeren me. How could I treat you different?”

“I don’t want you to go. I won’t have anyone to talk to. You’re the closest thing I’ve ever had to a friend.”

“You can make yer own friends. I promise. You’ve got a good heart an that’s all people need.”

Before I know what’s happenin, she’s in my arms again, pressin herself up against my body kissin me hard on the lips. I dunno what to do so I just stand there watchin her till she pulls away.

“I’m sorry.” Her face is redder than I ever seen it. “I had to do that. I would’ve regretted it otherwise.”

My mowf won’t form words an I can still feel the imprint of her lips on mine tho we’re not touchin.

“I’ll never forget you, Tye Wunders. If I ever get out of here we should meet up for lunch.”

I give a nervous chuckle at the obsurdity of that fort. “Okay.” I turn an make my way thru the corridor an down the stairs, feelin Lacey’s eyes on my back.

Eeli an Phee are larfin at somefin as I shut the front door behind me an Nimmo jumps up at my presence.

I have to clear my throat before speaking. “Okay, let’s go.” I storm ahead a few paces, feelin the cool breeze on my hot cheeks.

Eeli skips to my side. “Tye?”

“Yeah, what?”

She giggles. “I knew it.”

“Knew what?”

“Yer blushing.”

“I ain’t.” I skweeze my fists into balls.

“I can see a little bit of red in yer cheeks, you liar.”

“I’m just hot, want to git away from that creepy house.”

That makes her larf even more. “Phee!” He jogs to reach our pace an Eeli nudges him in the ribs. “Look at Tye’s face. Dint I say?”

Phee puts his hand to his mowf an looks right at me.

“What’s yer problem?”

“You lucky sod.” He chuckles. “I knew she liked you. She couldn’t stop lookin at you.”

“She hardly looked anywhere else.” Eeli chimed in too.

“I dunno what yer both talkin bout.”

“I fink Miss White wanted you to stay behind, Tye.” She’s got this knowin look on her face.

“She was just glad of some company, that’s all.”

“MmHmm.” Eeli’s holdin her stomak as she larfs. “Some romantic company.”

“Yer losin it.” I shake my head.

“Come on, Tye. You can tell us. We’re yer best friends ain’t we?”

I raise my eyebrows. “Are you?”

“Course we are.” She prods me in the arm. “You’ve bin doin some smoochin.” She makes kissin faces an Phee shrieks wiff larfter.

“She was too posh to kiss me. She just wanted a friend.”

“Yer lyin.”

“That’s the truth.”

“Liar.” She stops in front of me, haltin all of us. “Tell us the truth, Tye.”

I shake my head. “Stop it.”

“Why’re you lyin to us?”

“I dint like her like that. You know I dint.”

She looks at Phee an nods. “That’s the truth. But you kissed her anyway.”

“I dint kiss her.”

Eeli grins, shakin her head, turnin away. We continue walkin forward, Eeli growin bored of me an startin to sing.

It was only after she’d finished her song that Eeli turned to me again. “Oh, Tye. I forgot to mention you’ve got somefin on yer mowf.”

Phee starts snickerin as I rub the back of my hand across my lips. It comes up wiff that red stuff that Lacey’d bin wearin. I feel my face flare wiff heat.

“Liar.” Eeli giggles.
