13. Work

Grace's POV

I woke up to my alarm song playing, but I was too lazy to turn it off. It seemed like I had barely fallen asleep before it had jolted me awake. Just five more minutes of rest...

"Grace get your butt out of bed! We've got a lot to do today!" Leah was standing over me, shaking me awake.

"Mmm no," I mumbled, still have asleep.

"Fine," she replied. "Have it your way."

I heard her walk out of the room. Seconds later, the floorboards creaked as someone made their way over to the bed.

"Oh gosh Leah if you have a bucket of water I swear I'll cut your throat," I threatened, my eyes still closed.

"Would you really do that to me, love?" A deep British voice replied.

"HOLY SHIT LIAM YOU SCARED ME!" I exclaimed, as I practically fell out of bed.

He chuckled as he helped me up. "I would never mean to purposefully. You do know it's like 8:40, right?"

"What? Dammit!"

"Leah's been trying to get you up for the past hour..."

"Ugh! I must have been half-asleep. I can't believe I'm suposed to be at the studio in 20 minutes and I'm not even dressed!" I said as I raced around the room, trying to pick out a decent outfit.

"Better late than never. I'll be in the kitchen when you're ready."

I nodded and continued with my frenzy, rushing to the bathroom to brush my teeth and make my hair decent. I swiped on mascara and lip gloss and decided it would have to do. I returned to my room and slipped on high-waisted dark denim shorts and a white lace tank top, and stepped into my sandals. I looked at my watch- 8:52.

I grabbed my bag and ran down the hall. "Okay I'm ready, let's go!" I shouted to Liam and Leah, barely stopping to open the door.

"Ugh, Grace, aren't you forgetting something?" Liam asked.

"Ummm... what?"

"Your guitar..." Leah replied.

"Oh my gosh yeah!" I grabbed the case from the corner of the room. "Thank you! Now let's go!"

I could tell Liam found my angst to be amusing by the way he was silently exchanging smirks with Leah as we stood in the elevator. "Heyyyy!" I whined jokingly.

"Sorry babe. I just find you funny."

Liam's POV

It was just a short drive to the studio- it was a different one than the one where we'd been writing, but it was in the same neighborhood.

I pulled up in front and Leah jumped out. I glanced around- no paparazzi in sight... yet.

"Good luck, Grace, you'll do great," I said, turning to my girlfriend and giving her a quick peck on the lips.

"Thanks Li!" she replied as she got out of the car, guitar in hand.

"I'll be right in," I told her as I drove to find a parking spot.

Several minutes later, I made my way into the building. It was nice- not nearly as upscale as I was used to, but a studio's a studio.

I was directed to the recording room, where Grace was sitting with her guitar, looking anxious. She seemed to calm down a little when she saw me, but the poor girl still seemed nerve-wracked.

I took a seat on the couch next to Leah, who looked the exact opposite of Grace; calm and collected.

"Grace is nervous," I remarked to her.

"She definitely is," Leah replied. "But there's no logical reason for her to be. All we're here for is for her to record a demo- and it's no big deal if she makes a mistake. That's what re-dos and editing are for."

I nodded. "She's just tightly wound, I guess."

"Okay, Grace, whenever you're ready to start," the sound engineer told her.

I could see Grace take a deep breath as she held the guitar pick to her instrument. Within seconds of beginning to play, her entire mood changed. She seemed even happier and more at ease when she started singing.

"I've never been one

to have it easy with guys

they seem to overlook

the girl with the timid voice

I always kept thinking

someday things would change

the day he came into my world

he blew me away

Sixteen..."

The sound of her voice completely stunned me, just like the day we met at the open mic. Every bit of Grace was beautiful, from her hair to her eyes to her smile, to the way she played guitar like it was her entire world. I couldn't take my eyes off of her.

I suddenly felt an elbow jab me in the rib.

"Ow!" I exclaimed, rubbing my side.

"I had to stop your drooling," Leah smirked.

"Was it that obvious?"

"Yes. Leeyum's in love with Gray-ace!" She taunted.

"You are so lucky that room is soundproof," I replied, jokingly shoving Leah. I could feel my face reddening. I really didn't want to have this discussion.

"Aww, Li-Li's blushing!"

Okay, that was it. "And Leah's head over heels for Hazza..."

She instantly clammed up.

"Now look who's red! Ha!"

The rest of Grace's session was mostly quiet between the two of us. Neither wanted to admit our true feelings, so we found the silence preferable.

"Great job, Grace, I think we're all good," the sound engineer declared about an hour and a half later. Grace's demo was acoustic, so there wasn't a lot of extra work required other than recording her guitar and her voice.

As soon as Grace came out of the recording space, she collapsed into my arms. "Liam, I have so much more respect for you now! Recording looks so easy, but it's soooooo tedious! I mean, all that was for 3 four-minute songs!"

"I know, babe, it's tough," I chuckled. "But it's worth it in the end!"

"I sure hope so." She took out her phone and hit the Twitter app. "Ahh! 27 thousand followers!"

"Are you verified yet?" I asked. I had contacted Twitter with the request.

She shook her head. "Nope."

"Can I see your phone for a second?"

"Sure! I'm super hungry- where'd Leah go?"

"I think she went into the hall to take a phone call," I replied, accepting the phone she held out to me.

"Uh Grace? You know you have 9 missed calls, right?" I told her, seeing the phone app with the notifications.

"Huh?" She turned on her heels. "I do?"

"Yeah... it looks like they're from Home, Mom, and Elisabeth."

"I guess I haven't really figured out the iPhone yet...OH MY GOSH LIAM," Grace exclaimed, covering her mouth with her hand.

"What?!"

"I NEVER TOLD MY FAMILY ABOUT US. I HAVEN'T EVEN TALKED TO THEM SINCE BEFORE WE MET. AND NOW I'M ALL OVER THE MEDIA!"

"Oh my..." I replied. I didn't really know what to say.

"I'm such dead meat... oh geez..." She muttered as she took the phone back, scrolling through the missed calls.

"The first call was from Thursday! They've been trying to contact me for three days! I always call them on Wenesdays and Saturdays... I forgot on Wednesday with all the craziness."

"You should probably call them back, I would think." I didn't know Grace's family, but I assumed this was the only way to fill them in.

"Yeah... or maybe I should go visit them. It's Saturday, so my dad will be home from work, and the train ride's only a couple hours."

"I can go with you. I mean, with all the media buzz you're probably safer not traveling alone."

"Good point. And my dad would loooove to meet you," she smirked.

"Please tell me he doesn't keep a gun locked in his study to torment his daughters' boyfriends with."

"My dad is nothing like that... but maybe not in a good way," she grinned. "Seriously though, would you do that for me? Take a whole day just to visit my family?"

"Why not? You've told me about them; I'd love the chance to meet them for myself. And I get to spend it with you, the prettiest girl I know."

"Aww thanks Li! You're such a cheeseball. Let's just find Leah and tell her our plans before we head out."

We walked into the hall, where we met Leah.

"Hey Grace! All done?"

"Yup," she replied, a smile on her face.

"Fantastic. I can't wait to get it out to a couple record labels. The next step is to wait for their replies. My company has some pretty close connections so it should be pretty fast. In the meantime, just keep writing. It's still early, so hopefully I'll get back to you about what they say tonight... but definitely by Monday or Tuesday."

"Thank you so much! Liam and I were going to head to Hyde Park for the day... I really need to visit my family. But we can drive you wherever first."

"Nah, I'm okay. Thanks though! I'm gonna stick around here for a little while and make sure everything's good for your demo, and then maybe go out later. You two go have fun."

"Say hi to Harry for me if you see him," I told Leah.

She nodded. "Will do, see you guys later!"

I walked with Grace to the front of the studio. Crap. The cameras had found us; the photographers were lurking outside.

"Ready?" I turned to Grace, who nodded.

I opened the door and we made our way through the mob swiftly, ignoring all of the ridiculous comments and climbing into the car.

"Where to now?"

"How about... Grand Central? I've got pretty much everything I need, and if we hurry, we can make the 12:20 train."

"Sounds good to me." I drove to the train station and parked.

Grace's POV

The morning had been absolutely amazing-recording was long, but so much fun, and I really hoped I would have the opportunity to make a whole album. On top of that, Liam had agreed to come with me to visit everyone at home!

We sat together on the train, my head on Liam's shoulder, as we watched the trees whiz by. I was so hyped by the events of the morning, but the lack of sleep the night before took over...

"Wake up, Grace, we're here, love" The next thing I knew, Liam was gently shaking me awake.

"Oh gosh, I never even realized I fell asleep! Sorry," I said, standing up and stretching. Liam grabbed my purse and we made our way off the train to the platform.

"Hmm... I guess we can call a cab. There's not many around here, but I'm sure we can find one. I would call my sister, but I wanted to surprise everybody," I rambled.

"There's one over there," Liam replied, pointed at a yellow taxi parked by the entrance of the train station. We walked over and he held the door open for me, scooting in after.

I told the cabbie my home address. As soon as we were moving, I leaned back and looked at my watch. It was 2:35. I took a deep breath; this was going to be an interesting afternoon.
