3. Meeting the Drummer and the Band

Walking down the hallway of BBC Studios my mind was still trying to get over the shock of seeing my Aunt Lou and seeing One Direction in her office. I had been so caught up in my thoughts that I didn’t realised that I had walked back to Aunt Lou’s office and bumped into someone. “Oh my god, I’m so sorry.” I mumbled as I looked up to see who I bumped into. “It’s alright.” I heard a familiar voice reply. My eyes widened in shock. “You’re kidding.” I whispered to myself as I backed up a bit. “I’m Josh, and you are?” Josh asked, holding his hand out for me to shake. “I’m Rosella but my friends call me either Ro or Rose.” I replied, shaking his hand. “Nice to meet you. So do you work here? I haven’t seen you here before, are you new?” Josh asked, seeming a little nervous. Why is he nervous? I’m the one who should be nervous. I thought to myself. “No, I don’t work here. I’m actually here to see my aunt, Lou Teasdale. She’s actually talking with the boys at the moment, I’m just waiting for her to finish.” I said, walking over to the wall and sitting down. Josh sat down beside me, looking like he had nowhere to go. “I didn’t know Lou had a niece.” Josh spoke as he sat down beside me. “Well it’s been nine years since I last saw her and it was only, what, two years ago that she started working with you guys? My mum tried to keep in touch with her but after a while she just didn’t speak to her. I would ask her ‘When’s Aunty Lou coming over’ or ‘Can we go see Aunty Lou’ and I always got told that she’s too busy for visitors or that we have too much going on to make the drive from Manchester to London.” I sighed, shaking my head. “I love my aunt but I was hardly ever allowed time to spend with her. My father was always strict; he would never allow me to stay over at any of my friend’s places. I always had to have them over my place. Sorry, I’m rambling, I get that way when I’m stressed and annoyed.” I said, feeling a bit embarrassed. “Hey, we all need to vent sometimes.” Josh smiled, hearing my stomach growl. “Want to grab something to eat? They might be a while.” Josh asked, nodding his head at my aunt’s office door. “If you don’t mind paying for me. I only have five pounds.” I shyly asked. “Sure. Come on.” He said, getting up and holding out a hand for me. I smiled and took his hand to stand up. We quickly made our way down and outside. “So where do you wanna go?” Josh asked as we looked around for somewhere to get some food. “Let’s just go to subway.” I said, pointing across the road. We made our way across the road and were now waiting in line to order our food. “How about we play twenty questions while we wait?” I asked Josh. “Sure. Want me to start?” He asked, taking a step forward as the line moved up. “Sure.” “Alright, do you play any musical instrument?” Josh asked. “I can play the guitar and drums.” I replied, remembering how much I begged my parents to get me a guitar for my birthday. “How long have you been playing the drums for?” “Oh god, now your making me think.” Josh answered, making me laugh. “I’ve been playing for eight years but I’ve only been playing with the boys for two years.” He said as we finally reached the counter and got our food. “So how good are you on the guitar and drums?” Josh asked as we walked over to a table. “I’m not sure, I’ve been playing the guitar since I was nine but I never let anyone hear me because it was just a way for me to get through tough times. And I only just started playing the drums two years ago and that was in high school but since then I haven’t been able to play.” I said, blinking away the tears that were starting to form. ‘Your insecure, don’t know what for, your turning heads when you walk through the door.’ “I swear to god I’m going to kill Louis.” Josh said, turning red as he took his phone out of his pocket. “Hey, at least he didn’t put it as barbie girl.” I shot back with a laugh. Josh just glared at me and said. “Don’t give him any ideas.” And answered his phone. “What Louis?” Josh answered, sounding a bit annoyed. “I’m across the road getting something to eat.” “Okay, I’ll be right over.” Josh said, hanging up. “Well, they’ve just finish. Want to head over with me?” Josh asked as he stood up. “Sure, I haven’t got anything else to do till Lou gets off of work.” I said, standing up and walking out the door with him, food in hand. “Why don’t you come to practice with me and the boys? I would love to hear you play guitar and drums.” Josh suddenly asked as we walked into the BBC Studios building. “I-I, umm, I’m not too good with playing my music in front of people. That’s why I’ve never played, I always get nervous and scared that they won’t like what they hear.” I said shyly, looking down at the floor once we got into the lift. “Come on, you don’t want to be waiting around here for another half hour do you?” Josh asked. I could actually hear the concern in his voice. Why is he concerned? He hardly knows me. I thought as the lift doors opened on level eight. Looking up, I walked out of the lift and straight towards Aunt Lou’s office with Josh following me a bit behind. “Louis, watch out!!” I heard someone say just as I was knocked to the floor. “Woah!! Ouch.” I said, shaking my head. “Oops, I’m so sorry. Are you alright?” I heard Louis asked, holding his hand out. “Yeah, I’m fine. Just hit my elbow on the ground.” I replied, taking his hand to get up. “Nice going there, Louis!” I heard someone else say bringing me out of my thoughts. Quickly letting go of his hand, I looked around and saw that the rest of the boys and Josh were all standing around us. “Rose? Are you alright?” I heard my Aunt Lou call. “Yes, I’m fine. I’ll be there in a minute Aunt Lou.” I replied, turning back to the boys. “Your Lou’s niece?” Harry asked, finally breaking the silence that had fallen around the group. “Um, yeah. I’m Rosella but I like to be called Ro or Rose.” I said, giving them a small smile. “I should go, thanks for lunch Josh, it was really nice talking with you.” I said, giving him a quick hug before heading over to Lou’s office. “Wait! Rose, aren’t you going to come to practice with us? I’m sure the boys won’t mind, it would give them time to get to know you.” Josh asked, walking over to Lou’s office with me. “C’mon love, give me a chance to make it up to you,” Louis grinned, as Harry punched his arm lightly and nodded in agreement. “Clumsy oaf, knocking this pretty woman to the ground…” “Shame!” Liam and Niall yelled, pointing at Louis who dramatically sighed and ‘fainted’ into Josh, who only caught him in time through lots and lots of practice. “Forgive me, Rose!” Louis cried, pretending his knees weren’t working. I rolled my eyes and nodded shyly, spotting Aunt Lou leaning against her office door with a small, knowing smile. “Um… let me… get my bag, then?” I asked nervously, looking to Josh simply because I knew him better. He nodded eagerly and shoved Louis off him, the six boys bunching up to follow me to Aunt Lou’s office. “Honey, we need to talk,” she said, her back to me. I cleared my throat and she turned around, eyes widening as she saw my collection of male celebrities. I would be lying if I said my ego wasn’t slightly inflated; I mean, it’s One freaking Direction. “Ah, maybe later, then. The boys know my address-” she shot them all a hard look, waving her index finger as she tried not to smile. “- bring her home before dark, and take good care of her. Remember that I’m the one who cuts your hair and I can make you bald if I want to.” Liam shuffled, running a hand over his shaven head, and Aunt Lou rolled her eyes. “I’ll dye yours puke green,” she threatened, and he gulped before nodding seriously. “You worry too much, Lou,” Harry grinned, as Louis slung an arm around my shoulders, tugging me backwards. “I’ll see you later!” I called over my shoulder, heading for the doors. “Now, did I hear Josh say you can sing?” Louis asked seriously, his eyes bright and intense. He still hadn’t let me go and my heart must’ve been as loud as a bass drum on eleven; it amazed me that he didn’t hear it. “She plays drums and guitar, too,” Josh replied for me. Zayn, who had thus far been quietly texting someone- Perrie, maybe- looked up and gave Josh a wicked grin. “If she’s any good, I think we’ll replace you,” he teased. Niall giggled and slapped Josh on the back. “She’s a hell of a lot prettier than you, Josh!” “She’s also right here!” I cried over their noise, earning six blushing glances. Louis tutted and mock-glared at them all. “No respect for ladies… despicable.” I laughed quietly as we made our way down in the lift. The boys were their loud normal selves and kept asking me all sorts of questions as we made our way to SYCO Studio. Somehow Harry had gotten a hold of my phone and was now looking through it. “Harry! Give me back my phone!!” I whined, trying to reach back to him but with no luck. “How did you even get a hold of my phone?” I asked, a bit confused. Harry just looked up at me and gave me a knowing smile. “It fell out of your pocket.” Was all he said as the car came to a stop. “Can I have it back now?” I asked, getting out of the car. Harry just smiled at me and then started running away with me hot on his tail. We got a few weird looks as we ran through the hallways of SYCO; occasionally Harry would duck in and out of rooms trying to slow me down but all he was doing was slowing himself down. Eventually I was able to get close enough to jump on his back, making him fall over from the sudden weight being added. “Thank you.” I laughed, taking my phone out of his hand. The remaining lads caught us up, and Louis laughed the loudest at Harry’s pouting face. “I like her, she can stay,” he grinned, opening the door to the recording studio they used most. It was set up like a music store, with pretty much anything that made noise all in one place. There were three recording booths and a mixing station, where I presumed their editors made magic. It kind of looked like the one they’d shot Little Things in, though it wasn’t the exact one. “This is amazing,” I said, genuinely in awe of the place. Josh escaped over to the drums and the rest of the boys spread out around the room; Niall grabbed a guitar and Louis fell into a couch against the far wall, calling me over. “So,” Louis began, as Harry plopped into the space on my other side. “Tell me about you, Rose.”
