6. Chapter 6

The bedsprings groaned in protest as you lay down on the bed, book in hand. Flipping it open, you turned to Act I and proceeded to read. A pair of bright eyes stared skeptically at the cover.

"Shakespeare? You haven't even finished the Edgar Allen Poe collection you started."

"I'm up for some perverse humor. Besides, I need to practice biting my thumbs."

"Romeo and Juliet, then? Why do you require practice? On second thought, I'm not sure I really want to know..." Zexion gave you a frown, opening his own novel.

"Larxene...she's getting on my nerves. Any chance I can get to confuse her would be great." You tossed him a wink, gaining a surprised expression from him.

"You've been here for one-and-a-half days, and you're already making enemies?"

"She's a tramp. 'Nuff said."

"Well, at least you have some sense in whom not to befriend; she and Marluxia parade the upper floors like they own the place. If you ask me, governing is up to the elder members, and they treat us basement dwellers like we're nothing but expendable equipment. It's deplorable."

"Marly seemed nice," you stated nonchalantly over your book.

"You've given him a pet name?" he questioned in astonishment, face contorted with disgust.

"So what? I don't mind him unless he gives me a reason to. Besides...he gave me a rose." You held up the object, which had been resting at your side.

"Which means almost nothing. The guy spreads flower petals with every movement. It's repulsive."

"To each his own. I think it's nice." Catching sight of his face, you hastily added, "Sort of."

"Don't be fooled. He's worse than Xemnas at times."

"Has Xemnas ever given you a flower? I certainly haven't received one from him."

"Oh, don't be a smartass." He spoke it harshly, but you could almost swear the corners of his lips twitched. "Xemnas has too much poise to be giving out such petty gifts."

"I told you; I do not mind Marluxia, and won't unless he gives me reason otherwise." Zexion snorted and shook his head, returning to his book. "Look, I know he's cruel to you, but at least give me a chance to form my own opinion, hmm?"

"You seem to have already done so."

"You know what?" Standing, you tossed the book on the bed. "This has no chance of working if you're go to be so damn hard-headed."

"Word has it that you're a bit stubborn yourself. Wouldn't that make you a hypocrite?"

"You don't even know me, Zexion! Why not try to, and quit listening to what everyone else says for a change?"

"Well, that makes two of us. Ever stop to think that, as a scientist, I might prefer to figure things out myself?"

"That is exactly what I'm asking for! Can't you let others do the same thing? Or are you the only one with that privilege?"

"Watch your tongue," he snarled. "I may be your roommate, but I am also your superior."

"Fine. I'll commit it to memory, just like everything else. 'Xevia, behave yourself. Xevia, stay within these boundaries. Xevia, hold your tongue. Xevia don't have an invoice...a life.'"

"No one has asked you to do such a thing." He was standing now, glaring down at you from just inches away. A sweet musk mingled with roses sent your senses tingling.

"You weren't there. You wouldn't know. See this scar?" You touched your cheek with a wince of the memory carried with it. "This is what becoming a pet to your superiors can do to you. I followed orders..."

"...Most of the time?" inquired the Cloaked Schemer softly.

"I just wanted some adventure; free will, and Axel..."

"No need to say more." Hanging your head, you sighed and ran your gloved fingers through your hair. "I am surprised you remember everything so vividly. Most Nobodies lose their memories with their heart. I can tell you still recall how a heart feels; you act the pain extremely well."

Eyes widening, you pushed your face to an even lower angle, making a curtain from your hair and praying he could not see you blush. He reached forward and touched your cheek gently, as though testing it. An electric shock passed through your nerves, making you shiver and step away.

A low chortle erupted from his chest before he moved in the opposite direction, seemingly satisfied. Your scar still burned where he had touched brushed it, making you curiously reach up and place your hand upon it. Bewilderment held you fast at the ghost of the male's touch.

"Most vivid. Perhaps I should speak to Vexen about this...maybe he'll have a logical explanation."

"Vexen?" The name rung a bell. The image of a feminine hairstyle flashed into your mind. "Oh...the blondie. You know, we need to host a hug-your-neighbor meeting so I can learn who everybody is."

"...I would murder you if you dared suggest it. That sounds absolutely deplorable."

"Don't be afraid to say you'd love to hug me- it would be so special. We could have music boxes playing in the background!"

"What the- music boxes?!"

"Heck yes! Ooh! 'Never Had a Friend Like Me.' That could be our theme song!"

"Oh, joy," he stated, voice dripping with sarcasm as he turned away to head into the lab.

"And we can play 'Pattycake!'"

"Stop following me."

"Marluxia could dance too, and spread flowers everywhere."

"That's not funny."

"Oh! And if we could convince Saïx, he could-"

"Xevia!" He spun around to fix you with an expression of exasperation.

"Yes, Zexy?" you answered innocently.

"You...you are so weird." he broke into a chuckle. Once more, he turned around to complete his journey to the computers. A grin was plastered to your face as you nodded vigorously. "Of all the people to be assigned as my roommate, it had to be you."

"You're just ashamed to admit that you're glad it was me."

"Lexaeus would have been suitable, I cannot lie, but it is good to have an addition to the basement members."

"A sexy addition!" you boasted, gaining another amused sigh. "Even though you're attractive enough to make the basement actually look good, so you don't really need me, but..." Suddenly beginning to read a few book titles, you were too busy to notice the muscles rippling in his shoulders as he grew tense.

"Er...I turned on the hot water for you," he mumbled.

"You did? Yay!" Zexion turned to watch you prance to the bathroom, a light pink hue tinting his fair cheeks. You thought he was attractive...that was a first. Shaking his head heartily to clear his thoughts, the man got to work, tuning out the rushing water and the sweet smells of roses and jasmine in the background. One thing was for sure- you did smell good.
