Counting Stars

16 year old Lela Hemmings has never felt real love. Her father died when she was 15 and her mother died giving birth to Lela. Lela lives with her Aunt. She is depressed, insecure, and shy. She walks the halls with her head down and her mouth shut. She is bullied though. Pushed. Laughed at. Judged. Due to her shyness, she literally doesn't talk to people. At all. As a result, she is afraid to stand up for herself. Then someone walked into her life. She didn't want them to stay, but she didn't want them to leave. Can someone as simple as a person, as simple as a boy, change her life?

Counting Stars

I step outside and take a deep breath. I look up at the sky.

"What are you doing out here? Its really late."

"My dad used to tell me that the brightest star is your loved ones watching over you." I point up at the brightest star I could find, "I want to say that that is my mother and father, watching over me."

"Why cant you. Remember what I said to you. They are watching you right now." He says. I look over at him.

He is looking up at the sky.

"My mother, before she went to jail, she would sit outside with me and my sister. She would tell us to count the stars. The number of stars is how much she loved us. After she was gone I would visit her and tell her how many stars I counted the night before. Till one day she told me to stop counting them because it wasn't worth it. She said it didn't matter how many stars were in the sky. They were just stars, and numbers are just numbers."

He is still starring at the sky.

"102." He says. "That's how much I love you."

I look up at the stars.

"How did you count that many?"

"Its easy. I have been doing this for years."

I try and count the stars, but it isn't going to happen.

"Yes." I say.

"Yes what?"

"Yes. After we graduate, I will run away with you."

He looks at me and smiles.

"Seriously?"

"Yes. Seriously." I smile.

He hugs me.

"You do realize that we have barely been at school. If we plan you graduating, we are going to need to get caught up." He says.

"Yeah, I know." I reply.

I'm running away with Ashton.
