9. Chapter 7

Preston

"Thanks for the help Preston. It meant a lot." Mia smiled up at me.

I grinned. "Any time. I was glad to help."

"Hey, can I ask you a question?" Mia put the duck's cage in her car. I found out a little earlier that his name was Donald. Donald the duck.

"Sure." I hoisted my backpack higher. "But then again, you just did."

"Preston."

"Okay, okay. I'll stop. What is it?"

Mia wouldn't meet my eyes. "Are you and Avery... Are you two a couple?"

I must have paled drastically or my expression must have changed to something really bad. Mia bit her lip and stepped back. "I-It's okay if you don't want to tell me. It's just that she-"

"No. No, Mia, it's okay. We... We used to date, until Avery's so-called 'best friend', Linda, kissed me and Avery saw us. She thought I cheated on her and... Yeah. That was two years ago. Avery moved here, then I moved here."

"Oh." I couldn't read Mia's expression. "That's..."

I sighed. We were quiet for a while.

For some reason, I was thinking about the Valentine's Dance. Only three dollars for you and your sweetheart! Come to the gym Feb 14, 9:00 pm tp 12:00 am and dance the night away! It had seemed so cheesy at the time.

"Hey Mia... Can I ask you a question now?" I asked.

Mia nodded, looking half surprised. "Of course."

"Do you-"

Buzz.

My phone pinged against my leg. I jumped. "Sorry." I apoligized to Mia. "I should get this." I took my phone out and looked at the newest text. It was from my mom.

Preston, please hurry home quickly! It's urgent!

My eyes widened. "I have to go! My mom says it's urgent! I think something bad has happened."

I ran to my car, not waiting for Mia's response.

My mom's text echoed in my head. Please hurry home quickly! It's urgent!
