An Old Friend [Niall Horan/Ariana Grande fanfiction]

Long ago, before the fame, Ariana Grande was just a normal girl from Boca Raton, Florida. And becoming a member of the most popular boy band in the world was just a twinkle in Niall Horan's eye. What everyone didn't know was . . . they were best friends. And maybe something more. But they lost touch over the years. Now, Ariana's devastating cancer is back. And this time Niall's never letting her go.

3. Did You Say Ariana Grande?

Niall's POV

As soon as I hung up the phone, I couldn't stop smiling. I was finally going to see Ariana again! Score!! At first I thought that everything was going to crumble apart when she started crying. But that's what I love about Ari. (I love everything about her actually.) She's so quick to forgive, she has a kind and trusting heart. I'm not about to leave her again. Not this time.

"Hey mate, who are you talking to? Since you're grinning ear to ear I'm going to assume its a girl," Harry said as he walked into my section of our hotel room. He had a smirk on his face and his curls were all messy, which probably meant that he had just gotten back from a makeout session with his latest girlfriend.

"Not just any girl," I told him. "Ariana Grande."

Harry stopped everything and stared at me, his jaw dropping to the floor. "No freaking way. You scored that adorable redhead chick?"

"Well I've known her-" I tried to explain, but I was cut off by Louis.

"Did someone just say Ariana Grande?" he poked his head out from the TV room where he was watching some weird show we'd all never heard of. His blue eyes lit up like Christmas lights.

"Yes!" Harry called back. "Our Nialler just got off the phone with her! I think they're doing some action tonight." He winked suggestively in the way he did. God, sometimes I hated him. I pushed him playfully, and he ruffled my hair.

"Ooooh," Louis cooed like a little girl.

"It's not like that," I stammered, my cheeks burning red.

"What's not like that? What?" Just then Zayn walked into the room, his hair looking perfectly styled as usual. He'd just gotten back from a date with Perrie. "Does Niall have something to say? Got a new girlfriend?"

"How'd you know?" Harry asked, his green eyes wide, looking amazed.

"I've got a sixth sense here." Zayn tapped his head and grinned. "So who's the lucky girl, Nialler?" he asked me.

"Ariana Grande," Harry and Louis said at the same time.

Zayn's eyes widened, and he whistled. "Seriously? Man, if I didn't have Perrie...," he looked off into space and then quickly snapped out of it, patting me on the back. "Good job, mate. She's a keeper."

"It's not -- I mean....," I stammered.

"Ooooh, Niall's got a crush," Harry, Louis, and Zayn said in unison. I put my head in my hands, blushing harder than I've ever had in my life. Why couldn't they just leave me alone?

"You can stop now," I protested.

Liam barged in. "I'm sorry, I couldn't help but overhear you guys. Does Niall have a date?" he said, drinking something from a glass.

"Yes, he does, and he faaancies her," Louis sang from the TV room.

"Shut up now," I growled.

"Her name is Ariana Grande," Harry added, smirking like it was the most delightful thing in the world.

Suddenly Liam did a spit take, liquid flying everywhere. His eyes were huge as the other boys laughed. He coughed and wiped his mouth. "You're kidding me, right?"

"No, we're dead serious," Zayn told him.

"Good for you, Nialler." Liam smiled at me.

"Oooh, yes it is," Harry winked.

That was the last straw. "OKAY, THAT'S IT. I'M LEAVING FOR MY DATE NOW. GOODBYE." I hauled myself up and pushed through the crowd of the four boys surrounding me, crossing the floor to get to the door.

"Date?" Harry's ears pricked up as he followed right behind me. The others did the same.

"DATE?!" Louis screamed from the TV room.

"GOODBYE, IDIOTS!" I called before slamming the door in their faces. I slumped against the door and slowly fell to the ground. Man, that was exhausting. I can't imagine what they'll say if Ariana Grande actually becomes my girlfriend one day, for real. Of course, that's just wishful thinking. I smile to myself at the thought.

Hey, a guy can dream!

Ariana's POV

I hung up the phone and closed my eyes. I couldn't believe that had actually happened. Niall called me. I'd been wondering about him all these years. Wondering if he forgot about me. In truth, I couldn't stop thinking about him either. That sweet boy in elementary school who caught fireflies with me and held my hand when I was in the hospital because of my cancer, that boy was the same boy that had called me today. After all these years. I hadn't realized how much I missed him until I heard his voice.

"Ariana? You okay back there?" called a familiar voice. I looked up to see my brother Frankie. Quickly, I wiped my eyes, making sure he didn't know I had been crying. "Hey, Frankie." I tried to smile.

"What's the matter, Ari?" Frankie looked concerned. Oh, stuff it. He knows me too well.

"Guess who called?" I asked.

"Who?" Frankie didn't look concerned anymore, he looked alarmed. "Is it your doctor? Are you okay?" We were constantly making sure the cancer wouldn't return, which was stupid. I've been cancer free for years. Why would it come back now?

"No, no, no, It's nothing like that. It was Niall, from elementary school. You remember, my best friend? Now he's in the band One Direction." Of course, my brother already knew this, but whatever.

"Oh my gosh, seriously?" Frankie asked. "I thought you two forgot about each other."

I smiled. "Actually, quite the opposite. We're meeting for Nandos in a couple of minutes to catch up."

"That new place that was originally from the UK?" Frankie asked.

I nodded. "Yup, the one and only."

"What about your meet and greet? Your fans are so excited," Frankie told me.

"I'm going to have to cancel it," I said. "This is really important."

"Okay, Ari, if you say so," Frankie said. "You sure?"

"Yep."

"Ok, I'll go tell everyone the meet and greet is cancelled." Frankie smiled at me.

"Thanks, big bro." I hugged him. He was the best brother ever.

"You're welcome, little sis." he hugged me back. "You have a good time with Niall, ok?"

"Ok. I will."

After he left, I grabbed my bag and sneaked out of the back entrance of the stage. I seriously had to get ready for my date with Niall. I walked down a long hallway towards the empty parking lot where the stylists, stage managers, etc. parked. And, of course, me. No one knew about this parking lot. If they did, it would be flooded with tons of fans and overeager paparazzi. I opened the door and walked outside into the sweet sunshine, only to find....

"ARIANA!!!"

"ARIANA, WE LOVE YOU!! CAN YOU TAKE A PICTURE WITH US??"

"CARE TO TELL US ABOUT YOUR MEET AND GREET BEING CANCELED, ARIANA?!?"

"WHERE'D YOU GET THAT GORGEOUS DRESS??"

"ARE YOU DATING ANYONE AT THE MOMENT, ARIANA?!?!"

I sucked in a breath. Great, how did this happen? How did they find out about this place?! There were literally hundreds of fans and paparazzi here. It was like I was being bombarded or something. Why did this always have to happen whenever I went out? Guess it's just one of the perks of being famous. I loved my job, but, seriously? I had to get somewhere!

I shielded my eyes from all of the camera flashes that were making my eyes hurt. What was I going to do? They were closing in on me!

"I'm really busy-- I can't talk now -- I have to go somewhere--" I tried to say, but they wouldn't listen. Jeez, where was my privacy?

Suddenly, I had an idea. I grabbed my phone out and texted Niall.

ARIANA: STUCK IN THE PARKING LOT... TONS OF PAPS AND FANS.. I'M GONNA BE LATE, SO SORRY :(

To my surprise, a  few seconds later, Niall replied. Wow that was fast.

NIALL: NOT ON MY WATCH YOU'RE NOT ;] I'LL BE THE ONE IN THE BLACK CAR WITH THE EXCELLENT DISGUISE. SEE YOU IN TWO.

As I read the text, I smiled. I should have known Niall would always be there for me. He was there for me when we were little, and he's here for me now. God, I just love that little blond, Irish, leprechaun dude. I can't wait to start our friendship again. I know it'll be just perfect.
