Natural Causes

There is only one family that runs the estate. The Dexters. They control what happens. Who sells what. They control the toms and their pimps.
There is no escape. Once you're on the estate that's it. You're trapped.
Everyone and everything is theirs. Their word is law. And if you don’t obey. If you rebel. You'll die... of natural causes.

4. Finn

"Keep Still."

I flinched as mum applied witch-hazel to the cut on my lip. When she was finished cleansing the wound she gently prodded my ribs. I winced at the sharp stabbing pain that was followed by throbbing.

"I don't think it's broken." She frowned. "You shouldn't antagonize your father like that Finn."

I looked away from her. "He isn't my dad. He's nothing to me."

She turned my head back towards her so she could look me in my eyes. "Enough. I know you're upset about Joey but -."

"You don't get it do you?" I cut in. "He killed Joey. He didn't want you with him."

"Finn I said enough." Her voice wobbled a bit.

"Why? Joey is dead because of him and you want me to leave it? What's wrong with you mum? Even hell is too good for him!"

"Finnegan stop it now," she said through gritted teeth.

"Because you love Jacob? The only reason why you care about him is because he knocked you up like some cheap whore and here I am! You know fuck all about him mum. He killed Joey and you're too damn blind to-."

A loud unnatural sound came from her mouth. Her hands covered her ears and she scrunched up her eyes and screamed. I winced at her cries. She was like a child. A stubborn child. I didn't want to do this but I knew it was the only way.

I put my hands on hers and pried them away from her ears.

"Mum," I said softly, hoping that she could hear me above her screeching. "Please stop."

She continued.

Her mouth shut abruptly but her breath came out hard and fast.

"Promise me you will speak with your father," she whispered.

"Mum he isn't my -."

"Promise me!" She yelled.

I couldn't do it. But if I didn't who. knew what mum - and more importantly Jacob - would do. I clenched and unclenched my jaw.

"Yes mum."
