Natural Causes

There is only one family that runs the estate. The Dexters. They control what happens. Who sells what. They control the toms and their pimps.
There is no escape. Once you're on the estate that's it. You're trapped.
Everyone and everything is theirs. Their word is law. And if you don’t obey. If you rebel. You'll die... of natural causes.

1. Finn

She burst into tears.

“It was just a case of wrong place wrong time.” Jacob Dexter said softly. “I'm sorry Kate.”

“It's OK – sniff – it isn’t your fault Jacob.”

I walked in. her whole body was shaking. What had he done to her

“Mum? What's going on?” I said eyeing Jacob. “What's he done?”

When he was around something had gone down. But then something was always going on and it was never good.

Like most people round here, I’d been dealt a shitty hand of cards at birth.

Jacob scowled at me. His dark eyes assessing my every move. I hated him with everything I had. I wished my mum had nothing to do with him.

“What's happened mum?”

“Leave it now Finn,” Jacob answered for her.

My eyes narrowed but I ignored him. “Mum?”

“Its Joey,” she breathed looking at me, her blue eyes welled up with tears again. “He's dead.”

My heart stopped.

“He's dead? How...? What happened?” I looked at Jacob knowing deep down in my gut that he was responsible. “What the fuck did you do?”

“Relax Finn,” she soothed. “It isn't you dads fault.”
“You want me to relax? After what he's done?” I gestured to Jacob.

“Now son, leave the adults to talk,” Jacob sneered.

I returned his scowl with my own steely glare. “I ain’t your son. And you ain’t my father.”

He stood up to his full height at struck me across the face, knocking me to the floor. He took a step towards me.

“I’ll be damned if I let you speak to me like that, boy. If I'm not mistaken, that's you calling your mother a common tart and I’m telling you now I wont 'ave it.” he shouted. “I've had enough of your lip so if I were you I'd button it.”

I stood up and looked him in the eye. “I hate you. You know what you are? A name on a birth certificate. You ain’t nothing to me.”

He raised his hand again. But it didn’t hit me. He hit mum. She'd jumped between us. Mum gasped and clutched her face.

Jacob looked like he was about to give birth to a litter of kittens. His eyes bulged and his jaw twitched. He was going to give me the thrashing of my life.

And by God he did.
