9. Chapter 8

Audrey woke up to an empty bed. She was somewhat disappointed. She'd at least thought that Justin would still be there when she woke up, maybe even with his arm around her, but he wasn't. With a sigh, she tossed the blankets off and stood up.

At that moment, Justin came out of the bathroom. Audrey froze automatically at the sight of him.

His hair looked washed, and was sticking up all over the place. He had basketball shorts on, but the one thing that Audrey couldn't take her eyes off of was his bare stomach. Yes, Justin was shirtless, and Audrey was staring at him.

To her surprise, he smiled. "Morning."

"Hi." She managed to squeak out.

"Stop drooling and come here," Justin was holding his hand out to her, and she took it cautiously, trying to avoid staring at him again. "Come with me downstairs."

Audrey nodded. She wasn't too fond of the downstairs area because she was scared of what Justin's friends were going to say. She already knew that three of them were aware of her staying here, but what about the others? Was Justin going to introduce her to them?

Thankfully, that wasn't happening just yet. It looked like there was nobody around today, except for Audrey, Justin, and a girl sitting on a bar stool in front of the kitchen counter. She was scrolling through her phone and was drinking something that looked like hot chocolate or coffee. Audrey couldn't tell.

"Hey, Avery?" Justin said, letting go of Audrey's hand. The girl--Avery--looked up from her phone and smiled.

"Hi Justin," She said softly before turning to Audrey. "Hi..."

"Hi Audrey." Avery smiled. Audrey thought she saw Justin smile too, but she wasn't sure.

"Is everybody out?" Justin asked, stealing a glance at Audrey for no reason.

Avery nodded. "Claire thought it would be good to try again. So she took the girls. I have no clue where the boys are."

Justin's jaw set, and Audrey remembered what he'd said last night. I'm not sending you girls to handle business anymore. She suddenly wondered what was going to happen to Claire, though she didn't think much about it.

"What about you?" Audrey asked out of curiosity.

Avery smiled at Audrey. A warm, real, smile. "Justin asked me to stay home today," She turned towards Justin. "For unknown reasons."

Justin rubbed the back of his neck. "I wanted you to take Audrey out today. Make her feel welcome."

Audrey tensed up, and Justin placed a hand on her back, as if to say: everything's fine, don't panic.

"Isn't she going to need some clothes? I don't think she can wear your shirts and those jeans forever." Avery said.

"Yeah, you guys just do girl stuff all day. I have some things to take care of." Justin said. "Unless you like wearing my clothes."

"But, I don't have any money." Audrey ignored him. Justin smiled.

"It's my treat." Justin said, placing his hand over his chest. "Now, Avery will get the money I set aside and you guys can go wherever you want."

This time, Audrey remembered something important. She was trying to get herself out of this situation. After seeing what happened with Claire yesterday, she was afraid of what Avery was like. She quickly excused her and Justin for a moment, and Avery nodded. Audrey pulled Justin towards the bottom of the stairs where Avery couldn't hear them.

"Justin, I have work today!"

He shrugged. "Ask Avery to take you there. You can quit."

"Quit?" Audrey asked in awe. No way in hell did he think she was going to quit just because he said so. "That's how I make all of my money! I can't just quit."

"And where is all of that money now?" Justin asked, crossing his arms. Audrey froze. The money was back at Aunt Sara's house. With a sigh, she slumped her shoulders and frowned. A second later, Justin's arms were around her.

She hesitantly wrapped her arms around him, and they stood there. Justin pulled away and looked at her. Audrey's eyes were welling up with tears and he wiped one away.

"Hey, don't cry. The reason you're here, is so I can make sure that you're happy. I don't want anybody to hurt you, and I trust Avery with my life." He said. Audrey nodded, wiping a few tears away herself.

"When I first saw you in the restaurant," Audrey started. "You were the biggest jerk ever. What happened?"

She thought he said something like: We got closer, or you happened. But he just shook his head and lead her back to the kitchen.

Avery was waiting there, wearing a leather jacket and black boots. Audrey thought it was weird, but when Justin whispered: "She's the nicest girl in this group, don't worry." She relaxed.

To Audrey's surprise, Avery held out her arm. With a suppressed giggle, Audrey walked over to her and connected their arms. When she looked back at Justin, he was staring at her with--was that jealousy in his eyes? Or was it hurt? Audrey couldn't tell. He just didn't look very happy at the thought of her leaving.

"Come on," Avery said. "Let's go get some clothes and quit your job!"

Audrey froze momentarily, realizing that Avery had heard her and Justin's conversation by the stairs.

"I heard it, but don't worry." Avery whispered into Audrey's ear, like she'd read her mind. She looked back at Justin one more time, but he was gone. Her heart sank.

"Okay," Audrey said. "Let's go, I guess."
