21. Chapter 20

Tuesday morning Rose had the day off of work and she was especially happy since Maggie had talked her ear off the previous day. Rose hadn’t been to Holmes Chapel in a long while and decided today would be the perfect day to go there. She was at Scarlett’s house visiting since she wanted to see her niece and nephew. She was still on a high from the previous day with her boss and the opportunity that has opened up for her.

“Auntie Rose! Are you going to play?” Jonas asked Rose excitedly.

“Of course I am, love! Why else would I be here? To sit around with your mum?” she asked and then scrunched her nose up in disgust. “Certainly not, your mum isn’t very fun.”

“Rose!” Scar yelled with widened eyes and leaned forward and lightly hit Rose’s arm in surprise.  Rose let out a laugh and wrapped her arms around Jonas in a tight hug and began kissing him excitedly.

Jonas’s loud giggles erupted from his mouth as he was under Rose’s grasp. Scarlett smiled at her sister and her son’s interaction. Scarlett was seated in a blue chair with Melanie seated in her lap holding a sippy cup and was slurping at it.

“Hey sis,” Scar said making Rose look up at her sister. “How have you been?”

“Good, why?” she asked making Scarlett let out a heavy sigh.

Rose was a little confused as to why her sister was acting so quiet. She wasn’t typically this quiet and Rose wanted to know what was going through her sister’s brain. Her sister often worried about her especially after the summer her and Harry were together and ended. She wanted nothing more than to prove to her sister that she was fine without giving her secret away to her.

“With Harry being married and all. Plus, you’ve seen him now,” she said placing Melanie down on the ground. “How are you?”

“Fine,” Rose said with a shrug. “So what?” she said trying to play it cool.

Rose didn’t want her sister to know about Harry and her. Scarlett often vocalized how she felt about cheaters. Scarlett claimed she could tell a cheater apart from anyone because they’re sleazy and they tended to follow their dicks instead of their hearts. They also seemed to get bored of their wives easily.

Rose didn’t think her sister was right about her opinions of cheaters. She knew that it was sometimes true, but she didn’t think that there was other reasons for men to do that. Harry was different, he wasn’t like the rest of them.

“Rose, come on,” Scar said leaning over and pressing her hand on her sister’s shoulder. “You can’t honestly think I’m that stupid. Isaac, Will, and I all think that you have been hiding your feelings. They’re going to come spilling out and we’re going to have to mop you up once again.”

“I am honestly brilliant, Scar, I’m fine. Work is well, I’m well, can’t you just accept that?” Rose asked looking at her sister. “Why can’t I be fine?”

“Because you’re never just fine, Ro, you always have something pooling inside that brain of yours. You’ve been infatuated with Harry since you were eighteen. Why should now be any different?”

“Seriously, Scar? Why can’t you just accept that I’m happy?” she asked getting angry. Rose was growing furious with her sister. She wanted Scarlett to be happy that she was happy with whatever it is she’s happy about.

“This has something to do with Styles, doesn’t it?” she asked and Rose looked at her sister with furrowed brows. “God dammit! Why? What has he done to you?”

“Nothing!” Rose yelled at her sister.

“Mummy?” Jonas asked looking a little scared.

“Love, take Mel and go to your room, okay? Mummy has to talk to Auntie Rose,” she said lifting Melanie to her feet and putting her hand in Jonas’s. Scarlett crossed her arms and watched as Jonas walked down the hallway with his little sister and turn into his bedroom.

“So what? You’re talking to him again or is he a fucking cheater?” Scarlett asked her sister.

                “Scar—“

“No, this is not how you deal with this! What are you doing with him?” she asked walking up to her sister. “There is obviously a reason for this, what does Styles have to do with this?”

“Scarlett,” Rose warned giving her sister a harsh look.

“Tell me! I’m your sister; I deserve to know what the fuck you’re doing with him! What happened?”

“You really want to know what’s going on? I’ll tell you what is going on. I’m seeing Harry, okay? I don’t even fucking care, Scar! Nothing you say can change how I feel for him!”

“What?” Scarlett asked clearly shocked by the revelation Rose just gave her. “You’re seeing Styles? Why? He is fucking married!”

                “He doesn’t even love her!”

Scarlett was astonished by her sister’s behaviour. Not once did she think of her sister as someone who would willingly help someone cheat on his wife. Of course, Scarlett knew the extent of her feelings for Harry, but she didn’t think it would go as far as this. She thought Rose had more class than doing this with her ex-boyfriend.

“Rose, you’re going to hurt that sweet girl. She is so nice and you are fucking her husband! If you were her, think of how you would feel? He’s going to get bored of you then leave you hanging!” Scarlett said making Rose extremely upset.

Rose pursed her lips looking at Scarlett. She knew in the back of her mind that her sister had a slight chance of being right, but Harry always confirmed that she is the only girl he’s ever truly loved.

Rose turned and walked out the back door. She sat down on the back porch and put her head in her hands. She felt hurt by her sister, but also by herself as well. She knew her sister could be right, but she wanted nothing more than to prove her sister wrong. She wanted to be the person who could have that one person that she fell in love with all those years ago. She want Harry.

“Listen,” Scarlett said coming outside. “I’m sorry, but it is what it is.”

“My heart wants Harry. He’s the only person I’ve ever wanted and the only one I will have, Scar. I’m not giving up. This is something I won’t give up on,” Rose said and Scar sighed. “You make me want to smoke.”

“It’s a bad addiction, just like Harry.”

“Scarlett, you’re seriously starting to piss me off,” Rose spat to her sister. “I am an adult.”

“What you’re doing is stupid,” Scarlett said looking at her sister. “I’m just being a good older sister and looking out for you. Why can’t you see that?”

“Because I’m driven,” Rose said softly. “I’m going back in.”

Harry finished classes that day and went to his desk to pack up his things to go home. As always, his mind had wandered to Rose and then to Mallory. The whole situation was becoming sort of overwhelming and he was beginning to yearn for some time to just to be with Rose and forget the world.

He walked into the car park and was ready to go home and relax. When he first took the job of being a teacher, he never expected it to be more stressful than the life he lived immediately following the X-Factor. He found himself sometimes wanting to be back in One Direction and performing his heart out once again.

Harry really did miss the rush of being up on stage. He missed making funny faces with members of the audience and wearing the strange items thrown up on the stage. He even missed the annoying cameras following his every move when he went somewhere. He was occasionally asked for a photo, but it was nothing like it was before. The thing he missed the most was the signings and he would talk with the fans who spent a good portion of their life trying to be noticed by them.

Rose sat down at her sister’s kitchen table with a wine glass in her hands. She was swirling the dark liquid inside and she stared at it with her big brown eyes. She was lost in thought as she thought about everything that has happened.

“I’m not taking you home, just so you know,” Scarlett said as she leaned against the doorframe.  Rose let out a laugh and looked up at her sister.

“I think I want you to take care of me when I am completely plastered,” Rose said with a light smile on her face. “You love me,” she said pointing her finger at her sister.

“I do and that’s why I’m saying what I’m saying,” she said with a smile. “Just… please be careful. I don’t want you to get hurt.”

“I have to learn to cope on my own at some point in time,” Rose said lifting the glass to her lips and taking a sip.

“I think you should be done drinking.”

“Scar, I just started drinking this,” Rose said giving her sister a serious look. “I mean it, I need to be drunk. Capital D-R-U-N-K.”

Scarlett looked at her sister with her eyebrows raised and an amused smile placed on her lips. She shook her head at Rose as the wine glass was once again lifted to her lips.

“I wanna be drunk again,” Rose sang and Scarlett let out a snort as she began giggling. “Oh boy, I better stop.”

                “You think?”

“I apparently can’t withhold my alcohol. I have no tolerance,” Rose said with a laugh. She placed the glass in front of her and folded her hands together and took in a deep breath. “You need to hide the alcohol, Scar.”

“You just need to learn to resist, Rose.”

“Bite me,” Rose said with a laugh. She leaned back on the chair and threw her head back and looked at the ceiling fan. “What has my life become?”

“You’ll figure it out,” Scarlett said taking a seat at the table. She took the wine glass Rose had set aside and lifted it up to her own lips and took a drink. “You make me want to be an alcoholic.”

“I thought maybe it was your children.”

“They are angels compared to you,” Scarlett said with a laugh. She stared off in the distance and she let out a sigh. “Harry’s here,” she said and Rose looked at her.

                “What?”

“Harry. He is across the street leaning against his car,” she said and Rose turned around to see if her sister was telling the truth. “You can go, but just remember what I told you.”

Rose hugged her sister and walked out the door. She instantly smiled when she saw Harry looking at her. A smile appeared on Harry’s face as well when he saw the smile grow on her face. She crossed the street and wrapped her arms around his tall and lanky body. Harry’s arms went around hers almost immediately so he was able to hold her closer to his body.

“What are you doing here?” she asked Harry with a smile.

“I could ask you the same thing,” he said with a chuckle. “I saw your car here.”

“I’m glad you did,” she said with a smile on her face.

“Did you want to go somewhere with me?” he asked and she nodded with a smile. “Get in then,” he said and opened the door letting her climb in the vehicle.

Rose smiled wide and watched Harry as he went around the front of the car. He climbed in the car and buckled his seatbelt. He leaned over and pressed his lips against Rose’s lips. He brought one of his hands to her cheek.

“I missed you,” he whispered looking her in the eyes and rubbing his thumb over her cheek.

“I missed you, too,” she said and leaned forward to give him a quick kiss. “Take me somewhere special.”
