18. Chapter 17

Harry stepped out of his work undoing his tie and opening a few of the buttons on his white button down shirt. He was fuming over the meeting and the pay cut. His mind was racing as to how he was going to manage the life he had with that. He knew what needed to be done, but he didn’t know if he could bring himself to do those things.

He got into his beat up car and placed the keys in the ignition. He turned the key starting the engine. He didn’t put it in reverse; he let it idle for a short while. As he let the car idle, he checked his phone for messages to see if any had come from Rose. None of them were from her.

His mind was still racing over the pay. He knew that he had to tell Mallory about the money issues that he would face beginning the start of the next school year. Only, he was hoping that he would be with Rose by then.

The papers were sitting in his briefcase and they were beginning to feel like a heavy burden carrying them everywhere he went. He feared that Mallory would break his trust once again and rummage through his things.  He just hoped he would never find the papers he had filled out and ready for her to sign.

As days went on, this burden began to feel as if it was weighing down on his shoulders. He feared that he would tear Mallory’s world apart by telling her of him being unfaithful to their marriage.

He regrets ever proposing to her. He knows that she shouldn’t have to go through this. Harry knows he should have been honest with her from the start of his affair with Rose, but he couldn’t bring himself to it. He couldn’t bear the thought of breaking her heart. He loved her, but not the same way he loved Rose.

“Damn it,” he muttered to himself and ran his fingers through his hair for what seemed like the millionth time that day.

Harry knew Rose was mad. She was probably beyond mad about him walking out that morning, but he knew there was very little he could do about it. He had his job and he wasn’t about to be fired because of their quarrel.

He left the parking lot heading back towards Manchester to try and fix things with Rose. He was determined to fix things with her over this stupid, okay, it’s not stupid, but he wanted to make things better with her. He wanted nothing more than to disappear from reality and go to her and share sweet kisses and make sweet love to her again.

About an hour into driving, he pulled up to her complex and parked in the stall that seemed to become his home since Rose reappeared in his life once again. He got out of the car and walked into the building going up to Rose’s floor.

As he rode the lift, his hands felt clammy and he was constantly wiping them on his trousers. He felt nervous. His nervousness was caused by his not knowing. He didn’t know if she would go back to him. Harry was silently praying in his head that she would. He didn’t know what he would do without her in his life. He spent five years not having her in his life; Harry knows that he can’t bear it another half a decade.

He went up to her door and knocked on it hoping she would answer. He knew that she was home since her car was sitting outside in her parking stall. He continued banging on the door for a few minutes.

“Rose, love, let me in,” he said into the door.

There was no answer from the opposite side.

Harry could hear movement and shushed talking. He assumed Eleanor was still there since they were there that morning. He knew someone was by the door and was probably looking at him through the small peep hole.

“I know you’re mad at me, but please, I want to talk.”

The door finally swung open making Harry’s heart lift. It seemed to drop almost immediately. Harry wasn’t pleased who had answered the door.

“What do you need to talk to her so badly about?” Eleanor asked crossing her arms. “Harold?”

“I need to talk about why I left. I need to talk to her and I want to apologize.”

            “What for?”

“Eleanor,” he growled between his gritted teeth. “Let me in.”

“Not with that attitude,” Eleanor said with raised brows.

“Eleanor, let him in,” Rose said from the couch. Harry stepped forward, but not before he received a dirty look from Eleanor.

Harry walked over to Rose. She was sitting on the sofa with Eliza on her lap playing with a stuffed doll. Rose wasn’t even paying attention to the child who was playing on her lap; all of her attention was focused on the green eyed boy who was making long strides towards her.

            “Rose,” he stated.

He paused to let out a sigh.

“I know what I did was wrong and—“

“You walked out mid conversation, Harry,” Rose said looking at him with her big brown eyes. “Why?”

“I had work and I just needed to talk to you this morning—“

“Why would you come here before work?” Eleanor piped in from the doorway.

Harry turned around to give Eleanor a glare. Eleanor raised her hands up and walked to the kitchen picking Robbie up from his car seat as they went. Harry faced Rose and got down on his knees to be at her level.

“It was my idea to do this and I can’t tell you how sorry I am for that.”

“I feel like you’re using me sometimes, Harry,” she whispered. “I don’t like that feeling especially when I know in the back of my mind that I love you.”

“I love you, too, and you know that! It’s just not as easy as I expected—presenting those damn papers to Mallory. I want to, but I can’t seem to find the right time.”

            “You realise—“

“That I’m making this harder on both of us?” he asked filling her words for her. She nodded with a straight face. “I know. I’m going to find a way as quick as I can to be with you.”

“Are you?” Rose questioned giving him a look.

“Rose,” he said as he shuffled forward on his knees. “You are the love of my life and I am going to love you for the rest of it. If I say I’m going to do something, I will.”

“You didn’t come back to me,” she pointed out giving him a raised brow.

“I was young and stupid, love. This is now I’m referring to. We’re adults and know what’s going on in the world. I’m going to make sure we spend the rest of our lives together.”

“No excuses,” he said with a smile on his lips. “You and me, we’re like to puzzle pieces.”

“Animal puzzle?” Eliza piped in looking at Harry. He let a soft chuckle escape his lips and nodded.

“Sure, a big animal puzzle,” he said looking at Rose with a dimply grin on his face.

“I’m in love with you, Rose, and I don’t think I will ever not be in love with you. You’re my reason to be,” he said placing his hands on her knees.

“Did you just quote Little Things and Moments?” Rose asked with a giggle on her lips.

Harry took a few moments to repeat his words over in his head. When realisation hit him, he began chuckling and gave her a nod.

“For the record, Harold,” Rose said leaning over Eliza. “I love you, too.”

Harry gave a large grin and leaned forward to press his lips to Rose’s in a sweet, tender kiss. He placed his large hand on her cheek allowing himself to be closer to the girl he’s been in love with.

Small claps erupted from below their faces. They split apart with smiles on their faces as they looked at Eliza clapping her hands together. She was beaming at the pair of adults with bright blue eyes.

“Are you havin’ baby? People who love each other has babies aaalll the time,” she said and Rose began giggling loudly. She covered her mouth in hopes of containing her light giggles.

Harry chuckled too as he looked at Rose’s reaction. He looked at Rose with admiration and couldn’t help but be brought to their future and when they could actually say that it was true.

“You have to be married to have babies,” Rose said to Eliza with a blush still vivid on her cheeks.

“I was in Mummy and Daddy’s wedding,” Eliza stated pointedly giving Rose a look. Rose blushed violently looking down at her lap.

“Well, then you’re special,” Rose said hugging the black haired child.

“I know, Daddy always tells me that,” she said nodding to Harry and looking rather chuffed about it. “Does Daddy tell you he loves you?”

“Yes, your Daddy says that to me and your uncles all the time,” Harry said with a smile. “Did you know your Daddy was in a band?”

            “Duh! Mummy was too!”

“I was in the same band as your Dad,” Harry said with a smile.

“Why not anymore? Aren’t you sad?”

“Yes, but Uncle Harry and Uncle Lou said some things and I thought it best be settled over time.”

            “What do you do now?”

            “I’m a teacher.”

“Like Uncle Louis?” she asked jumping up and down in Rose’s lap.

“Yes, like Uncle Louis. I teach music to little kids just a little older than you,” he said tapping his finger on her nose. She let out a giggle.

“Can I have you as a teacher?” she asked and Harry smiled.

“You’ll have to ask your mum and dad that, love,” he said making Eliza pout and cross her arms. “I would love to be your teacher, though.”

Eliza clapped her hands together excitedly and grinned at the adults. She slipped off of Rose’s lap and threw herself at Harry. She wrapped her arms around his torso and rested her head against his chest. Harry instinctively wrapped his arms around her and kissed the top of Zayn’s daughter’s head.

“If my Daddy doesn’t come home, you be my Daddy?” she asked looking up at Harry.

Harry’s heart stopped at the words.

            She knew.

She knew the extent of Zayn’s illness and it frightened him. His green eyes met Rose’s shocked brown ones.

“You shouldn’t think like that, love,” he said looking down at Eliza. “Your Dad will always be just that; your Dad.”

“I like you, too,” she said with a small smile playing on her lips. “You give me lots of hugs. Daddy doesn’t.”

“Your Daddy is sick and it hurts for him to move. Just think, Eliza, your Daddy is probably imagining him giving you a big bear hug. Like this,” he said and wrapped his arms around her small body tightly making her giggle loudly.

Rose leaned forward resting her elbow on her knee. She smiled at the scene in front of her. Harry was so good with kids and she knew that he wanted children. She also knew he was ready to take that step in his life, just not with the person he was legally joined with.

Rose sat up stiffly and thought to herself about making that step sometime in the future. She knew that she wanted kids, too, but she wanted to do it the right way. She wanted to be married first. She didn’t want to be like Zayn and Perrie with Eliza. She wanted things to be done her own way and not the new “usual” way.

“How about we play?” Harry asked the girl with a bright smile on his face. He got up off the floor and walked over to her toys. “What do you want to play with?”

“Toys,” she said with a bored tone. Rose let out a soft laugh.

“Harry, I would assume dolls,” Rose said with a small snicker evident in her voice. Harry looked up at her and stuck out his tongue.

“You can be… this one!” Eliza said picking up her Harry doll and handing it to Harry. Harry chuckled and shook his head at the doll.

“You want me to be Susan Boyle?” he asked holding the doll up. Rose let out a loud snort and covered her mouth.

“That not Susan Bowl,” she said making Harry laugh. “That you!” she said pointing to the dolls hair.

“No it’s not!” he said placing his hands on his hips.

            “Are you serious?”

            “Yes! I always serious!”

“Well then, why is that me?”

“Daddy said so,” she said looking at him with a look.

“Of course he did,” Harry muttered under his breath. “Yay! You found me!” he said clapping his hands together and taking the doll from her grasp.

“You’re too much,” Rose said with a laugh.

“You love me,” he said walking over to her and pressing his lips to hers.

“You love me,” she mocked back at him.

“Of course I do,” he said and walked over to Eliza. “What is this? An army?”

“No! Dollies!” she said looking back up at Harry. “Sit down! You play now!”

“A please would be nice,” he said taking a seat across from her.

“Please, Hawwy,” she said folding her hands and looking at him with big eyes.

“Your mother taught you well,” he said looking at her and picking up his doll.

“Hey Rose,” Eleanor said walking in the sitting room. “Can you watch them? I need to go to the supermarket for some things.”

“Of course,” Rose said holding her arms out to take Robbie from Eleanor. Robbie was placed in her arms and he looked up at her. “Hello there, Robbie. You going to pass out on me?”

“Of course he is, you’re boring,” Harry said in a teasing tone.

            “I am not!”

“To children you must be considering they pass out.”

“He’s an infant, of course he’s going to sleep,” Rose retorted back at Harry.

“Can I leave you children with these children?” Eleanor asked from the door way.

“Of course you can! Eliza loves me, right?” he asked her and she nodded with enthusiasm.

            “Let’s play toys! Yay!”
