You're My Kryptonite (Short Story for "Inspired By A Song" competition)

Life's unpredictable. Someone you bump into by accident could end up becoming a huge part of your life. Someone you don't know that well, may understand you the best. Someone you don't like, may be the one you fall in love with. Someone you just met could have a lasting effect on you. That someone makes you go weak in the knees. That someone sends shivers down your spine just by smiling at you. That someone makes you go crazy. That someone completes you. That someone is you, Harry Edward Styles.
**This is a short story for the "Inspired By A Song competition" based on the song One Thing by One Direction.**

1. You've got that One Thing.

*Tessa's P.O.V.*

I woke up feeling horrible, and extremely tired. Something about the dreams I had just doesn't feel right. The only thing that could fix this required me to get out of bed and into the weird London weather.

I groaned and decided to start my day. If only someone delivered coffee to my bed. Sadly, I live alone, and I highly doubt my neighbors care about my existence.

I wore a pair of shorts, a tank top and a zip up hoodie to go. I quickly grabbed my phone, some money for breakfast, wore my favorite pair of converse and stepped out of my apartment and into the dull, dreary weather that had inhabited itself over the streets of London.

I headed into the closest Starbucks and ordered some food and a large caramel frappuccino. The smell of coffee made the thoughts of the weird dreams fade away.

I sat down near the window and ate my breakfast as I stared at the dark clouds in the sky, wishing I could paint the sky on my wall and stare at it everyday. I'd been told several times that I could draw pretty well, but unfortunately painting wasn't really my forte. I couldn't paint to save my life.

Finishing up my meal, I walked out with my frappuccino in hand, enjoying it sip by sip. I continued staring at the clouds, intrigued by the different shapes and sizes, when suddenly, I felt myself bump into something as hard as a rock.

Cursing at myself for the loss of my frappuccino due to my absentminded behaviour, and praying that it was just a street lamp, I slowly looked up to meet a pair of green marble-like eyes.

"I'm so sorry, I should've looked where I was going!" he spoke in his raspy voice. "No, I'm sorry! I was staring at the sky like an idiot, it's my fault." I gushed, feeling embarrassed. "Trust me, I was doing the same thing. I'll make it up to you, let me buy you another frappuccino, Tessa." he insisted, with a friendly smile. "How'd you know my name?" I asked, my eyebrows knitting together in confusion. "Your cup," he said gesturing towards the empty Starbucks cup in my hand. "Oh, sorry," I blushed. "I'm Harry, by the way." he said, grabbing my hand and leading me back towards Starbucks.

Harry ordered a hot chocolate for himself and a cappuccino for me as he grabbed both and sat down at a table towards the back of the shop.

We sipped our drinks and talked about anything and everything. Even though I'd just met him, I felt like I could trust him, and talk to him about anything. He understood me so well; better than any one  of my friends.

"There's something special about you, Tessa. I just can't put my finger on it." he said, staring at me intently, as if he was studying my features, or heck, even reading my mind.

As we were walking home, I felt his hand brush against mine. We reached my building and I slowed my pace, turning to look at him.

"This is me," I said shyly. "I had a great time with you, Tess. Is it okay if I call you that?" he asked nervously. "Sure," I smiled. "We should do this again some time, here, have my number." he said, pulling out a paper towel and jotting some numbers down with his little pocket pen.

"I'm surprised that you still haven't recognized me," he said with a big smile as my eyebrows knitted together in confusion for the second time today. "I think that's what I like the most about you." "What do you mean?" I asked dumbfounded. "Google 'Harry Styles' and click on 'images'. I'll see you soon, Tess. Don't freak out, I'm just like you." he said, flashing his flawless smile at me before walking away and disappearing down the street.

Still not being able to understand what he meant, I raced up the 3 flights of stairs not wanting to wait impatiently for the elevator and dashed into my apartment and threw open my laptop.

I waited for a few seconds before my laptop came to life, while tapping my foot on the floor. I didn't waste any time and typed in 'Harry Styles' on Google. Within milliseconds, thousands of articles about him and 'One Direction' popped up. They were some sort of boyband that I'd heard of, but never bothered to actually listen to their music.

I clicked on 'images' and my eyeballs almost fell out of my sockets as I saw pictures of the same boy that I'd just hung out with. He was Harry Styles? THE Harry Styles that millions of 'directioners' were dying to meet, and here I am, having spent the afternoon with him being completely oblivious to the fact that he was - no - is a world-famous popstar whom girls throw themselves at every single day of his life!

I felt my cheeks turn red and hot as I realized what an idiot I must've looked like. What kind of person doesn't know who Harry Styles is? Someone who lives under a rock, obviously! I felt deeply embarrassed as I looked at the paper towel containing his digits. But as I looked closely, I noticed something else written in his neat handwriting.

I'm pretty sure you're embarrassed, love. There's no reason to be. Give me a call, don't be shy.
-Harry.x

I nervously chewed on my lip as I typed the numbers into my phone and hesitated to press the 'call' button. After a few minutes, I finally found the courage to call him.

"Ello!" his raspy voice sounded through my phone.
"Hi Harry," I spoke quietly.
"Tess? Please don't be embarrassed, or even worse - mad!"
"I'm not mad, Harry. Just a little embarrassed."
"Well, there's no reason to be! It's nice to meet someone who wants to get to know me as me, the boy from Holmes Chapel who sings and is part of a band in school, and not the world-famous popstar Harry Styles from that amazing boyband One Direction."
"Alright,"
"I hope you didn't think I was lying to you, it just never came up, I'm sorry."
"Oh, don't be sorry. It's okay, Harry!"
"I want you to meet the boys, they'd love you!"
"Are you sure about that?"
"Positive. Just make sure to listen to our music beforehand, though."
"Will do," I chuckled.
"Splendid. It's getting late, you should go to bed. Good night, love."
"Good night, Harry." I said, before the line went dead.

I went to bed with the biggest and goofiest smile on my face. Harry was amazing. Not the Harry Styles from One Direction, but the real Harry; the Harry Styles from Cheshire.

~A few months later~

*Harry's P.O.V.*

"Lou! I'm going to meet Tess!" I yelled as I grabbed my car keys and headed towards the door. "Hold it right there, young lad!" Lou called from the living room. "Yes, what is it, sir?" I decided to play along. "So, do you like this girl?" he asked, pretending to look and sound like my father. "Yes, very much, sir." I replied, trying not to laugh. "Hmm. Well, then go get her, son! She's a keeper," he exclaimed, patting my back as I burst out laughing. "Alright, will do, sir." I chuckled. "Seriously though, Haz. She's a really nice girl, you deserve someone like that, take care of her." he said with a heart-warming smile. "Thanks, I will." I smiled back and headed out of our apartment.

"Have fun, and remember to use protection!" Lou yelled as I got into the elevator and looked at him while shaking my head.

I drove to the Starbucks near her place and started thinking about her. She's all I can think about lately, it's hard to get her out of my head.

I loved her breath-taking smile that always lit up my world, her long brown hair the she always pushed behind her ears, her warm chocolate-colored eyes that I could get lost in, her pink lips that would look perfect on mine, and overall her beautiful self.

As I reached my destination, I walked inside to find her sitting at a table all by herself. I felt my heart race and even skip a beat as I walked towards her.

I've tried playing it cool,
But when I'm looking at you,
I can’t ever be brave,
'Cause you make my heart race.

"Hey, Harry!" Tess said, standing up to give me a hug. "Hey, Tess." I mumbled into her soft, sweet-smell hair as I felt my whole body going weak.

What if I'm falling for this girl? I've never felt this way before, it's maddening, and amazing at the same time. Should I tell her? What if it scares her away? Oh God, I need to get my act together before she thinks I've gone mental!

Shot me out of the sky,
You're my kryptonite,
You keep making me weak,
Yeah, frozen and can't breathe.

As we sipped our coffee and talked, I was praying that she wouldn't notice how I was feeling. I hope I didn't look like I was having a seizure.

I admired her as she talked to me. She was like no other girl that I've met before. Nobody compares to her, she's amazing, beautiful, charming and simply breath-taking. I couldn't wait to make her mine. If only she could see how much I like her.

Now I'm climbing the walls,
But you don't notice at all,
That I'm going out of my mind,
All day and all night.

"I know that all of this is probably always all over the news, and it's stupid for me to ask, but I want to hear it from you, are you seeing anyone, Harry?" she asked, looking a bit nervous as I snapped out of my thoughts immediately and studied her features.

"No, I'm single." I smiled, not taking too much time to reply. I didn't want her to get the wrong idea. I really liked her, and I wasn't planning to screw this up.

Her reaction was one of relief, she didn't say a word, though. A comfortable silence surrounded us as we simply looked at each other. Did this mean that she liked me too?

She's my world, and she completes me. Whenever I'm with her, I feel like we're the only two people in the world.

The evening went by too quickly to my discomfort, and before we knew it, it was 10pm. I wish I could freeze this moment in a frame and stay like this. Forever is a long time, but with her, I'm sure that even forever wouldn't be enough.

"I'll drop you off to your place, love." I offered with a smile. "Thanks," she smiled back, with a hint of redness on her cheeks, was she blushing?

The drive was silent. None of us spoke, but it wasn't awkward. I looked over at her from the corner of my eye, and it looked as if she was thinking hard about something. I guess I was doing the same thing, but with my eyes on the road, and on her.

As I drove into the street her building was on, I decided that I was gonna man up and tell her about my feelings towards her tonight. It's now or never.

I pulled up just outside her building, and turned to look at her. She looked so beautiful in the moonlight, her face was glowing, and her eyes were shining. I could look at her forever and not get bored even for a second.

"Tess, I need to tell you something." I started, trying to sound confident. "Alright, go on, Harry." she said expectantly. "I really like you. You're amazing, just the way you are, and ever since the first time I met you, I felt like I had this connection with you. I think you're beautiful, flawless, charming, sweet, and I might be falling for you. You've got me under this spell, and I don't know how to get out, but more importantly, I don't want to get out. I want to make you mine, I want to fall truly, madly, and deeply in love with you. You deserve every bit of happiness, and I want to give all of that and more to you. So, just give me a chance and let me sweep you off of your feet. But before you say anything, I want to sing something to you." I quickly pulled out my iPhone and started playing the instrumentals to a song that describes my feelings exactly and started singing.

"I've tried playing it cool,
But when I'm looking at you,
I can’t ever be brave,
'Cause you make my heart race.

Shot me out of the sky,
You're my kryptonite,
You keep making me weak,
Yeah, frozen and can't breathe.

Something’s gotta give now,
'Cause I’m dying just to make you see,
That I need you here with me now,
'Cause you've got that one thing,

So get out, get out, get out of my head,
And fall into my arms instead,
I don't, I don't, don't know what it is,
But I need that one thing,
And you've got that one thing.

Now I'm climbing the walls,
But you don't notice at all,
That I'm going out of my mind,
All day and all night.

Something’s gotta give now,
'Cause I'm dying just to know your name,
And I need you here with me now,
'Cause you've got that one thing.

So get out, get out, get out of my head,
And fall into my arms instead,
I don't, I don't, don't know what it is,
But I need that one thing.

So get out, get out, get out of my mind,
And come on, come into my life,
I don't, I don't, don't know what it is,
But I need that one thing,
And you've got that one thing."

As I finished singing, I could see tears in her eyes. She didn't say a word, she just pulled me into her arms. I breathed in her wonderful scent and rubbed her back.

After many long heavenly minutes that felt like hours, she pulled away, and looked into my eyes.

"I honestly don't know what to say, Harry. But I'll say this much, life's unpredictable. I want to give this - us a chance." she said, leaning in.

"Will you be my girlfriend, Tessa James?" I whispered against her lips. "Yes," she whispered before connecting her lips to mine.
