4. The Predator and His Prey

It was finally the day of homecoming and the girls were all getting ready at Allie's house. "Wait, he kissed you?" Olivia asked Allie. Allie nodded in response while putting on her dress for homecoming. She had told her friends about the details that happened after the football game.

Her friends were just as surprised as she was when they received the news. "Will you be seeing him at homecoming?" Charlotte asked, putting on some make-up. "Yeah, I guess. I mean, he did say that he was going if I was." Allie said, adding a touch of red lipstick.

"It's also likely that Jake and Garrett will be there too. Hopefully they both have dates so I can get them off my back." she added. The girls were finished getting ready and got into Allie's car. Allie arrived at the school and parked the car in the parking lot.

The girls got out of the car and walked towards the entrance to the school's gym where the dance was being held. "Couldn't they have picked a better place for homecoming?" Olivia asked as the girls entered the gym.

The gym was already filled with tons of people and music was so loud that they barely heard each other speak. "Hey sexy ladies." Garrett wrapped an arm around Allie's shoulders, pulling her close towards him.

She pushed him away. "Leave us alone Garrett." she said.

"Don't you want to have some fun?" he asked her as she rolled her eyes. She turned and walked off in a different direction. She didn't want to deal with Garrett and his football buddies. She walked out of the gym to get some fresh air and sat down on one of the benches.

"Tired from dancing?" She looked up to see Ethan walk towards her direction. He sat down beside her and she just shrugged. "No, just tired of having to deal with football players." She replied.

"I'm guessing it's a good thing I didn't decide to join the team then." he smiled.

She smiled, "You're better than them anyway." A slow song began playing and he stood up, holding out a hand towards her direction. "Care to dance with me?" he asked. She looked at his hand for a moment, then took it as he led her back into the gym.

He pulled her towards his body, resting his hand in the middle of her back. All she could think about was how romantic it was, looking into his eyes while the song played. She swore she had felt other eyes on them. She saw no one else, but him.

Their bodies were so close together that they were almost touching. She rested her head on his shoulder, enjoying the moment. Before the slow song ended, he looked into her eyes and gave her another kiss. This kiss seemed more passionate than the first.

He pulled away the second the song ended and within a few seconds, he was gone. After the dance, Allie and her friends walked back to the car. "How could he just leave you hanging like that?" Charlotte asked once they reached her car.

"Maybe he was late for something." Olivia said. She was curious about where he could've gone off to. She didn't let that thought bother her until after she dropped off her friends at their houses. She parked her car in the driveway of her house and entered, closing the door behind her.

She headed upstairs and opened the doors to her balcony. She leaned against the railing and looked up at the stars. She sighed, wondering why Ethan had left the dance early.

The next week at school, Allie entered her English class and sat down in her seat. As class began, she glanced over at the seat beside her and saw that Ethan wasn't there. Odd. She thought to herself. The bell rang and Allie went to her next class.

All morning before lunch, Allie hadn't seen Ethan. The thought of Ethan hadn't left her mind, even when lunch came around. "Allie, are you okay? You seem a little off your game." Charlotte said. Allie had been staring at her lunch without even realizing that she was doing it.

She looked up at her best friend and shook her head, grabbing her food. She threw it into the trash and entered the school. She was confused as to why she was feeling this way. She had never felt this way about any guy before.

Ethan seemed to have a hold on her. She walked out to the front of the school and sat down on the steps. She sighed, resting her head in her hands. "Why so glum?" Her head perked up and she saw Ethan walk towards her direction.

"Sorry I wasn't at school this morning." he said, walking over and sat down beside her. "It was an emergency." She liked the fact that he was being honest with her, but there was a tone in his voice that seemed to draw her attention to something else.

Maybe he wasn't being honest with her. "Oh." she said, then looked down. Nothing really special happened between them since that kiss at homecoming. Everything soon became awkward afterwards.

...

"Here you go." Allie smiled, handing an invitation to Ethan. "What's this?" he asked. The two of them were in their English class and Allie sat down in her seat. "Every year the cheerleaders throw this huge costume party. All the Juniors and Seniors are invited." she answered.

He looked at the invitation, reading over the details. "Are you going?" he asked, looking at her. She nodded, "I have to go, but..." She trailed off, looking away. She gently bit her lip, holding back from what she wanted to tell him. "But what?" he asked.

Before she could answer him, class was starting. Might as well tell him later. She thought to herself and went back to her work. After class, she walked to her locker and Ethan caught up with her. "What were you going to say earlier?" he asked.

"I was going to say-"

"Hey Ethan, do you want to be my date to this year's costume party?" Riley, one of the girls on the Varsity cheer team, asked. Riley and Allie had been rivals since Freshman year. She was mad Allie had gotten team captain, and would do anything to steal Allie's spotlight.

Riley was also blonde haired and blue eyed. "Sorry, but I've already been asked." Ethan said. Allie saw Riley's eyes darken a bit in disappointment. "Oh, I'll find someone else then." Riley said, then walked away with a group of girls following after her.

"So, I'll pick you up?" Ethan asked Allie with a smile. Allie nodded, then Ethan walked away. She couldn't believe what had just happened right before her eyes. As she walked to her next class, she knew Ethan could've easily said yes to Riley. But unfortunately, he didn't.

...

That Saturday evening, the door bell had rung. Allie checked the time on the clock and saw that it was seven o'clock. The time that Ethan told her that he'd pick her up for the party which didn't start until eight. She went downstairs, barely putting on the finishing touches to her costume, and answered the door.

"You're... right on time." she said.

"I might as well be." he said. "Can I come in?" She stepped aside as he smiled and entered her house. She closed the door behind him and said, "You can make yourself comfortable. I'm almost ready." She went back upstairs and began to do her make-up.

While in the living room, Ethan looked at the pictures on the mantel of the fireplace. "Okay, we can go." Allie said, heading downstairs. Ethan turned and within a few seconds, he was mesmerized by her. He wasn't sure if it was her costume, or the way she looked made him want her more.

He nodded and the two walked out of her house, then got in his car. He drove to where the party was being held and opened the passenger door for her. "Thanks." she smiled.

"No problem." he smiled, closing the door after she got out. They walked up to the front door with Allie leading the way. "Hey Allie, party doesn't start until eight." Charlotte said.

"I might as well help with some of the decorations." Allie smiled. She and Ethan both entered the house as the door closed behind them. "Great costume Allie. What are you supposed to be?" Gina asked.

"Ethan wanted to be a vampire who lived in the 19th century, so I dressed up as a Victorian girl who had been taken from her debutant ball." Allie answered.

"Ah, so predator and his prey?" Olivia asked with a smirk.

"Maybe Ethan can help with the hard to reach places." Charlotte said, holding a box of Halloween decorations in her hands. "Would you mind helping?"

"No, not at all." Ethan smiled, then followed Charlotte in a different room. "Well, if it isn't 'Miss I'm-A-Man-Stealer.'" Riley and her friends walked up to Allie. "I never stole him. I technically saw him first." Allie said.

"Oh please... Stop trying to act like you're Miss Goody-Two Shoes. We all know what you did to get him to come here." Riley said.

"She didn't do anything." Olivia said.

"Now your friends are backing you up. That's sweet." Riley smirked. "I bet you slept with him."

"I did not." Allie was getting furious that Riley was starting a rumor that wasn't even true. She wouldn't sleep with Ethan. "Why do you still keep him around? We all know what you do with guys after a few weeks of knowing them." Riley said.

"Remember what happened with Jake? Do you want to do that to Ethan too? He's better off with some other girl than you. I mean, you may not realize it now but I think Charlotte even has a crush on him."

"Shut up! She would never do anything like that." Allie spat.

"Oh really? Then why is it that she wanted Ethan to help with the decorations and not you?" Riley asked. Allie was stumped by that question. She knew Lotte wouldn't steal Ethan from her. They were best friends and they vowed that they wouldn't hurt each other, or let a guy get in-between them.

"You're such a liar." Allie said.

"So, the decorations are done." Charlotte walked back into the living room with Ethan following behind. "Ethan, I need to talk with you." Allie grabbed Ethan's hand, leading him out to the backyard. "What's going on?" he asked.

"I just want to know why you decided not to go with Riley to the party." she replied.

"I don't like her. She's not my type and besides, I like someone else." he smiled. "But I want you to know one thing." Allie heard it in the tone of his voice that he was serious with what he was about to tell her. She wasn't sure if she should be scared or worried.

"I'm trusting you with the only secret that I've kept for so long and you're the only person I could tell. Ever since I met you, I've been afraid to tell you and when I ran out on homecoming, it had nothing to do with you. There are points in my life when... when I can't let people see who I really am and it's haunting me knowing that I can't show you, so I might as well tell you.

"I'm a wolf."
