4. Chapter 3: Acquiescence

As dusk quickly approached us, the bird kid and I landed by an abandoned cabin that was tucked in the woods. He insisted on doing everything, almost demanding me to stay inside the cabin that was still furnished. I hated not lifting a finger. I hated laziness on my behalf. It’s something I never want to gain in my last minutes of my teenage years.

The mutant freak started a camp fire just outside the cabin as he roasted some meat he had found in a bag inside the cabin. The autumn wind slithered its way down my back, making me shiver. I tossed my hood on my head, shoved my hands in my pockets, and joined the new stranger. His grey eyes met up with my brown eyes.

“What’s your name?” he asked. I sat down and watched him cook the food, my eyes seldom drifting to follow the escaping embers.

“Brayden-Lynn,” I said. “But you can shorten it however you want.”

“I’m Aviary.”

“Well, Aviary, it was nice kicking butt with you,” I chaffed. Aviary snickered as he took the food off the miniature inferno and began to eat.

“So,” he began, his gaze set somewhere else, “you don’t know what you are, huh?”

I didn’t know who I was, either.

“No,” I said plainly. Aviary fixed his stare on me.

“Do you morph?”

“No. Just wings.”

“You’re human and avian. There’s your answer.”

I sighed and rolled my eyes at him. “There’s more than that. Was I born this way? Are there others like us?”

Aviary shrugged as he continued eating.

“Maybe you were born like this. Maybe you were created by the School. And I’m sure there are others like us.”

“Have you met them?”

“Yeah. One of them was the legendary Maximum Ride.” Aviary eyes lit up slightly with amazement. He blew a sigh as a smile grew across his face. “She’s just… wow. You can’t really describe that girl, but she is just legit.”

“I’ve never heard of her,” I said blankly, ruining the sparkle in his eyes.

“I hope you meet her, one day. If not,” he paused to swallow, then think—“tuff.”

I only huffed and started to brush some dirt into a neat pile. There was silence between us for a moment. I focused on the ground, but I could feel Aviary’s stare upon me.

“Do you know anything about the School?” he asked abruptly.

“I’ve heard of it, but I don’t really know of it,” I explained.

“Well, the School is where all the mutant kids are made and experimented on. The white coats are the jerks who tortured us in those cells and erasers are made to kill us. They’re a wolf hybrid—“

“But what about what that mutt said? Being part of the new batch?”

“The School made us. Or experimented with us. We’re basically the new generation of avian hybrids and we’re more advanced and better than ever. We’re stronger, faster, and more efficient than the rest from before.” Aviary took off his jacket and rolled up his shirt sleeve, baring his shoulder that had numbers of black on them: 2-4-0-1.

“What’s that for?” I asked, referring to his mark. He shrugged as he put his sleeve down and slipped his jacket on.

“Not really sure. As I was saying, the erasers are sent by the white coats to catch all of us fugitives that broke out of the School. So any mutant kid that’s out here, we’re running for our lives.”

I heaved a sigh as I stood up and dusted the dirt off my jeans.

“Well,” I began, “I’m gonna hit the hay. We’ve got one adventure for tomorrow if we plan on kicking mutts’ butts again.”

“Where’re you headed after this?” Aviary asked.

“Back to the School.”
