6. Death Shall Strike Down the Evil

Chapter Six: Death Shall Strike Down the Evil

Timothy sat at the many tables in Renaissance Corporations cafeteria. Rebecca had decided to go alone to visit Maxwell in his office. She was driven by her own rage at his deception then anything else. Timothy sat nervously awaiting Rebecca's return, the elevator opened and Rebecca came striding over to him, a confident smile plastered on her painted ruby lips.

"He doesn't know, I know or he's playing dumb as you say."

"He definitely knows I know and knows you do as well. Maxwell is a rat, a soulless rat, but a rat none the less."

"How are we supposed to get to him?"

"We get Chestworth first. Kill him and Maxwell loses his way to erase his enemies memories."

"How do we find Chestworth?"

"He meets with Maxwell every Wednesday at one thirty in the afternoon. He enters through the cafeteria so he doesn't have to sign in to the guest registry."

"He'll be here in a few minutes then. Look! There he is."

Sure enough as Timothy glanced discretely a crossed the massive room a man responsible for the pod children walked casually towards the elevators.

"Come on. We'll catch him in the elevator. Put in the ear plugs I gave to you."

"Why?"

"He has a word that will erase our memories."

"Let's go." Rebecca said as she placed the ear plugs in and grabbed Timothy by the arm and pulled him towards the elevator. They made it just as the doors closed and Chestworth looked at Timothy and had the nerve to smile at him.

"Hello sir, I don't believe we've made an acquaintance just of yet. Are you a friend of Maxwell's?"

"Yes I am. And you are?" The nerve of this man before him.

"I'm Timothy Blunt."

"Ah yes the Vice President of the company. I'm Alexander Chestworth, PhD."

"Nice to meet you Alexander. I do hope you know, I remember all." Timothy took out his dagger he had skillfully hid and stabbed Chestworth in the heart, "It was truly nice to meet you Alex, but you see Max is a bad man and you work for him. SO you must die. LOSCHEN."

Alexander Chestworth slumped to the floor of the elevator and bled out. Slowly he felt the very word he created to erase Maxwell's enemies memories was erasing his own. He did not remember who stabbed him, or why he was dying or Who Maxwell was.

Maxwell Tylerson sat in his office, writing memos for the office. He checked the clock regularly, wondering where Dr. Chestworth was. Surly after so many meetings at precisely 1:30 every Wednesday afternoon wouldn't have slipped his mind. Just as Maxwell was pressing the 'send' button he heard the elevator ding and shortly after an employee's scream. Maxwell shot up from his desk to investigate. He reached the elevator and to his horror he found Chestworth dead, stabbed through the heart.

"What do we do? Mr. Tylerson?" His assistant Judith asked, she was a scared, and wanted answers and direction but all Maxwell could do was gape in shock at the sight of his dead partner on the floor of the Torpedo.

"Call-call the BOTS Judith. Tell them there's been a murder at Renaissance." Maxwell disabled the elevator and returned to his office, sat down and returned to writing the memos he had yet to finish. He noticed a flashing icon at the bottom of the screen, 'INCOMING VIDEO CONFERENCE', he clicked 'receive' call; the face that filled the screen was his wife's, she was smiling coldly at him, her brother behind her, grief stricken and fresh tears collecting in his eyes.

"Rebecca, what are you doing?"

"What do you mean Max? I cannot spend the day with my grief stricken brother after his fiance was brutally murdered in their apartment while he was out visiting me?"

"You have every right to, its just you were just here."

"I was...and so was Chestworth if I'm not mistaken, he's a friend of your's?"

"He was, he was discovered dead minutes before you VC'ed me."

"Oh what a shame. I was going to tell you that I'm with child and in need of a pod. Unfortunately I think its too late to transfer the embryo to the pod now."

"What, you're pregnant?"

"Well yes. I just said that Max. Are you daft? Are you well?"

"I'm fine. Its just that my friend is dead, my best friend's fiance was found dead, and my wife is pregnant and didn't tell me. Am I leaving anything out? Are you dying from some unknown tropical disease that no one knows about?"

"No, how morbid! Maxwell we know what you're planning."

"You-You killed Chestworth didn't you?"

"And you killed countless others, including my father."

"You killed Tish! I know it was you, you asshole!" Maxwell averted his eyes from Rebecca to stare at Timothy. His eyes were ablaze with anger and sadness, immense sadness. Suddenly Maxwell felt an overwhelming sense of guilt rush him like a tsunami.

"Timothy,"

"Don't say you're sorry Maxwell. Because we both know you're not. You killed Tish because I knew your damn plan to take over the world. You are a lying piece of shit. You killed our father, you killed Tish, how far are you willing to go? How far will you go, how many people have to die until you realize your plan is just a ludicrous dream you had ten years ago."

"You don't know what you're talking about." Maxwell snapped. "I have to go, the BOTS just arrived. Keep your accusations private, and no one gets hurt." Maxwell turned the computer off. "Erase all files."

"Are you sure Mr. Tylerson? All files will be deleted permanently."

"Yes, I'm sure. Delete all files concerning Project X."

"Yes. Mr Tylerson. All files deleted."

"Thank you." Maxwell left the office and went to greet the BOTS.

"Mr. Tylerson. Do you know this man?" The BOT asked him as a greeting.

"No I do not know this man. I have no idea what he was doing here."

"It says here that his name was Dr. Alexander Chestworth. What would he want with a Law Firm?"

"I don't know. Maybe he was accused of malpractice."

"So you have no idea who he is Mr. Tylerson? BOT 3456 show Mr. Tylerson the surveillance footage please."

"What surveillance footage?"

"This surveillance footage." The BOT showed him an holographic image of himself and the body on the floor. Having the heated conversation that started this mess. The conversation Timothy Blunt overheard."Because it seems to me you know him."

"Yes I know him."

"You realize you just lied to the police right?"

"So what. I'm the most powerful man in Paradox."

"Sir, you may be the president of this company, but you are not the President of Paradox."

"Therefore, you are under arrest for obstructing an on going murder investigation." the BOT known as 3456 said. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be tried against you. You have the right to an attorney, if you cannot afford one, one will provided for you." Handcuffs were slapped on his wrists as his arms were forcefully pulled behind his back.

"Sir! Oh dear, what do you want me to do?"

"Judith, call Mr. Abbernathy and tell him I've been arrested. Then call Rebecca and tell her the same."

"Yes sir. Uh, C.B.O.T ? Uh how much is the expected bail?"

"Depends on what we find out." BOT 3456 led him to the stairs and guided him roughly down them. All seven flights.

"You have no evidence that I killed Chestworth."

"Won't you be quiet."

"Why should I? I know its my right to shut up, but I don't want to because I'm innocent of this crime."

"This crime? You've committed others?"

"Shit."

"I would say so."

"You seem surprisingly human for a robot."

"I was designed with a conscious."

"New design?"

"You could say that."

"Alright. So what are you an Android, Droid, Cyborg?"

"That is none of your business." Maxwell shut up long enough for the BOT to push him into the hovercraft.

The phone rang somewhere in the mansion, and Rebecca excused herself from her brother's presence to answer it. Her brother was a mess, beside himself with guilt and regret. His love was dead and he blamed himself, but who he should really blame was her husband, his best friend, and co worker. She answered the phone it was Judith; Maxwell's assistant, she sounded stressed and out of breath.

"Judith what is the matter?"

"Why Maxwell's been arrested."

"Has he? For whatever for?"

"Well the BOTS said he was obstructing justice of something to that extent! Oh you've got to do something!"

"Why should I? He killed my father, and he killed Tish. I will not help him. I know you've been sleeping with him, and I can tell you this he will be put away and you will go down with him because you're pathetic and stupid." with saying that Rebecca hung up the phone and returned to consoling her grieving brother. Perhaps the BOTS could be useful. Perhaps Maxwell with get what he deserves. Perhaps Death would take him before justice could.
