25. Explanations

Lea arrived home to a crying Juliet. She had learned a few words and names including: Lea, Mamma, no, yes, hungry, hi and bye. "Mom," Lea called out over the noise.

"Lea," yelled a little voice as she came stumbling out of the kitchen.

"Hey, sweetie! You can walk, your such a big girl," Lea said picking her up. "Has the tickle monster seen you today," she asked in a low whisper.

"No," Juliet whispered back.

"That's because she just came in the door," Lea whispered, looking around. Juliet followed her example and was unprepared for what happened next. Lea, ever so slowly, as to not alert Juliet, raised her hand above her tummy and pounced, tickling the startled child.

"No! NO," Juliet laughed.

"Lea, let her catch her breath," came the voice of Mrs. Talbot. She walked in and scooped the child out of Lea's tickling embrace. "It's almost time for dinner," she said. "It's time to wash up." Mrs. Talbot proceeded to soak a washcloth in warm water with soap and clean Juliet's hands.

Five minutes later, Lea, her mom and sister were all sitting around a small circular wooden table. They prayed and then dug in. The meal consisted of shepherd's pie, raw carrots and some lime green Jello for desert. Juliet ate some smashed peas and carrot mix with a tiny bit of Jello.

Dinner ended around seven and Lea was done with dishes by 7:50. At precisely 8:00, there was a knock at the front door.

Lea got up from reading a book, waved to her mother to stay sitting, Juliet was falling asleep in her arms, and heads to the door.

Checking with both her mind and her eyes, she recognized Severus, who was in the same suit that she had given him at their first meeting, and Fudge, who was wearing a bright lime green t-shirt with a blue tie, a pair of jean shorts and a woman's sun hat. 'Great, just what I need,' she thought to herself. Aloud, as she opened the door, she asked, "What are you doing here, Minister?" Severus glared at Fudge and told him to explain.

"Since your... accident, the Ministry has declared that you are to be watched at all times to make sure you aren't dangerous," Fudge said with some hesitance.

"Lea, who's out there," Mrs. Talbot asked.

"It's Severus and the Minister," Lea called over her shoulder. "Come on in, I guess." Severus walked in and greeted Mrs. Talbot politely, while Fudge just nodded at her. In return, Lea's mom smiled at Severus and glared at Fudge, remembering the last time they met.

"Well," Fudge started.

"Wait," Lea interrupted. Fudge looked as if he had been slapped in the face as Lea continued. "Juliet needs to get in bed first, and one person is still missing."

"Missing for what," Mrs. Talbot asked with a smile, yet in he eyes Lea could see suspicion. Lea didn't answer, but her checks flushed with guilt.

"Nothing. I'll take Juliet to her bed," Lea said, picking up her little sister and cradling her.

As Lea walked to their room, they shared one, Lea put Juliet on her back and watched her for a moment. As she turned to go Juliet opened her eyes. Lea left the room never knowing that she had accidentally woken her sister up.

As she was walking past the door to the living room, she heard the door bell ring. For the second time that night, Lea recognized a professor and opened the door with a smile to let Remus in.

Meanwhile in the girls' room, Juliet heard the door bell and wanted to see who was there. She wanted to do this so much that the crib soon had no walls in closing it and was soon level with the floor. The almost-one-year-old was soon crawling to the living room, giggling quietly.

In the living room, Lea showed Remus to an empty seat, which he sat on self-consciously. He couldn't bring himself to look anyone in the eye and instead looked at the floor. Lea wished he would look up, it was going to be a hard explanation and she wasn't sure she wanted to tell.

"Mom, there's something that happened at school," Lea began.

"You mean you haven't told her," Fudge asked incredulously.

"It not really the type of thing you send home in a letter," Severus sneered at Fudge.

"What," Mrs. Talbot asked.

"Well, you see Professor Lupin," Lea said with a hand motion towards Remus, "is a werewolf. I found out the first night back," she said hurriedly.

"I can see where this is going," Mrs. Talbot said in a low and dangerous voice.

"I kinda got bit by him. It was totally my fault and he had no control," Lea said even quicker than before. "I was being stupid."

"You got yourself bitten," Mrs. Talbot concluded. "By your teacher." Remus was sitting on the edge of his seat with his eyes down cast. He couldn't see Mrs. Talbot's glance at him. It was full of anger, but also pity.

"So, what does this mean exactly," she continued.

"She'll tell you later," Remus said, speaking for the first time since coming in. "Basically, Lea will turn into a wolf every full moon." That's all that anyone could say for the time being, Fudge was listening and they couldn't risk a leak, no matter what.

"She should tell us now," Fudge said.

"No," Severus said. That seemed to decided the end and stop the questioning.

"'The Ministry of Magic has sanctioned the tracking and watching of Lea Talbot after getting bitten by a werewolf, known as Remus John Lupin. This was sanctioned because of her previous powers and will continue until such as she is thought to not be a threat to others,'" Fudge said, reading from a document written in red and black ink with gold around the edges of the parchment.

"Who will be watching me," Lea asked nervously. "And will they be at school with me, stuck to me like glue?"

"A man named Kingsley Shacklebolt will be watching you. He will be with you while you are out of Hogwarts, but he will not be with you while at Hogwarts. I trust Dumbledore to take care of his students, at the very least." Severus glared at Fudge, he hadn't known about the new stipulations do to the accident.

"Great, a strange man is coming to live with me, my mom and my baby sister. All to make sure I don't bite anyone while I'm a dog," Lea said sarcastically. The 'dog' remark got her a sharp glare from Remus, but other than that everyone was silent.

"Lea is doggy," asked a small voice that was sitting in the hall. Juliet was looking at the grown-ups (in her eyes, Lea was a grown-up, too) with confusion. Her sister can become a doggy! Cool!
