Caged (HG Spin-off... I guess)

After a major war, The U.S. gets divided into the Gemstone Regions. Within the regions, there are different countries. Each country must compete in the game-show, Caged, where contestants fight to death. Did I mention that they'll be sharing the arena with mutant animals, such as the Solleonom, a mutant, jungle cat. Luckily for the contestants, there is an exit. If you're the last two standing, or the one who finds the exit, you get the amazing prize of life. But, is it worth living, knowing someone you love is dead?

8. Evaluations

"You were right." We stated in unison. He looked at me funny, then grinned. "About what?" He asked.

"Byrd." It was simply that. She clearly teamed up with Blayze, and I hadn't seen it. But, Cody had. If Cody hadn't told me, would it have been easier take? I'll never know.

"Oh," He looked down, "I'm sorry. That had to be hard." He tried. Apologizing wasn't going to do as much as he might of thought it would. I wish it would. He went in for a hug, and I shooed him away. I probably would've taken it, if he hadn't been right.

"No," I sighed, "It's not your fault, you don't need to apologize." I explained, "So, what was I right about?" I questioned.

"I didn't see Keila, or Roman. And, I brought you some peanut butter chocolate chip cookies!" He said, pulling a box out from behind him. It was wrapped red, with a ribbon around it. A clear sign it was made in Rubylin.

"What a nice surprise." I whispered, grabbing the box. Rubylin is known for having, and making the best food, so it was only normal for me to scarf down the cookies in two minutes. Cody sat there, laughing as I tore the ribbon off, and began my feast.

"Don't eat too much," He teased," We have evaluations in fifteen minutes." My gaze drifted from the near- empty box, to the clock across the room. 2:45. Oh, okay. I shrugged, then started back at the cookies.

Within five minutes,  the cookies were gone, and were waiting for our turns. Byrd and Blayze sat on the opposite bench, staring at the clock above us. Meanwhile, I'm still trying to figure out what to do. Throw knives? Shoot some arrows?

  I got nothing.

Byrd staring at me isn't going to help, either. "What time is it?" Cody asked, breaking the awkward silence we'd been holding.

"Two fifty-three." I said on impulse, hoping for the silence to return. I'd finally got something I'd wished for.

Two minutes later, Journee turned up. "I'm going to need Blayze." She said, the tone of her voice being unreadable. She held the door open, as he took his time entering the room. From what I remember from the past years, Blayze got anywhere from 7-9 out of 10.

The room began to empty, until there was only me left, awaiting my turn. I still don't know what to do, and I'll be going in a minute, or so! Journee pushed the door open, not even asking for me to come in, or anything.

  So, I went in, clueless.

Sitting on the couch, I watched the faces of the other tributes flash across the t.v. screen, numbers beside them. Locke got a 6, Rykira got a 4, whereas Roman and Keila both got matching 8s. Blayze got a 9, Byrd got an 8, and Cody; a 5. I waited for my number to pop up, to see Bernadette, Starr, Journee, Blayze, Byrd, and Cody's reactions.

  Name: Genevieve Hudner

  Country: Sapphiria

  Score: 0

Jaws dropped, things were yelled, and I just shrugged. "How could you let this happen?!" An outraged Starr burst, "What did you even do?!"

"Yeah, what did you do?" Blayze asked.

"I didn't know what to do!" I explained, "So, I sat down, and read." Starr looked like she was going to faint, and Byrd give a bewildered expression.

"Gen, I love you and all, but why? You're going to get yourself killed." Byrd fumed, "How could you let yourself get a zero?"

"The same way you betrayed your best friend" I blazed," If you all must know, I read the creed." I finished. Cody got up to grab the black, leathery brick that sat in the center of every room, on a pedestal. After flipping a few pages, he put his finger to the page.

" On this day, I declare the beginning of a new game?" He started. I nodded simply, and he continued. "This game is a punishment of our recent war.To show you of your mistakes, we've created a game. The eight countries shall offer up four contestants, or tributes, if you will. Two boys each, two girls each, between the ages of eight and twenty two."

The room remained silent, as Cody read through the rest of the creed. "Games are only as fun as you make them. Keep that in mind."

"I guess the judges didn't want to be reminded of why we're all here." I said, before leaving everyone else behind.

 Byrd has a point.

Wait until Annaleigh sees this. She'll be devastated. Now that I think about it, I'll never get any help. The sponsors will probably go for Keila, Roman, Blayze, and Byrd. I wouldn't be shocked if they teamed up to take me out, either. Mom. Oh my gosh, what will Mom say? Gladly, I've got two more chances to impress them. Them? The people of the Inner City. I've got the parade, and interviews. Then , I'm off. Off to my death, that is.
