Chapter 11 - Marley

They were so close. Our lips were so close to touching. For a split second I thought he was going to kiss me. In all honesty, I wanted to kiss him desperately but I didn’t, because I knew in the back of my mind that he would never speak to me again. I don’t want that, I want him and so I held back. He left me standing here, and I don’t know what to do.

I drove here, so I go to my car and just as I am about to put the key in the ignition, my cell phone rings. It’s Mr. McNeal. Oh my God. I press answer with a shaky hand.

“Hello?”

“Hi, Ms. Pennington. I’m going to cut right to the chase and tell you that the news you’ve been waiting for is good news.”

Did I hear him correctly? “Really? I got the job?” My voice is frantic and I can’t stop smiling.

“Yes. There was going to be a letter sent out to you, but I wanted to call you personally and tell you.”

“Thank you, thank you so much.” I gush. This is unreal. Everything is working out. “When would you like me to start?”

“As soon as possible,” Mr. McNeal says. “We are leaving Nashville in four days, so I hope you’re ready by then.”

My head swirls with the list of things I have to do. “Of course, I will start as soon as I can. Thank you so much, this means a lot to me.”

“You’re welcome, I know I made the right choice. I will talk to you soon, Miss Pennington.” He hangs up.

I turn on the radio loud, nothing will be able to break my great mood. I speed a little as I drive home in a rush to tell my parents the good news. I run inside and throw my arms around my dad.

“I got it!!” I scream, doing a little dance.

“Got what?” My mother asks, coming into the room.

“The job! I got it!”

They both smile. “I knew you could do it,” my dad says.

“Thank you. I start as soon as possible, I just off the phone with Mr. McNeal a few minutes ago.” I tell them.

“So are you leaving soon?” My mom sits us down on the couch.

My heart sinks when I realize I’ll be leaving them and Nashville for a long time. “Yes, the team leaves in four days. I am a stylist for One Direction. Dad, I know you’ve never heard of them. And I know it’s a long time I’ll be gone but I promise to call you often. This is my dream and I know I can do it, and do it well. Please understand, this is what I’ve been waiting for.” I sigh heavily when I finish rambling.

“We know darlin’, and you deserve this.” My mom reaches over to grab my hand. I squeeze it tightly.

“What about college? You have to go to college.” My dad points out.

“Please, dad, this is important. I’ll take some online classes if I have to. I don’t want to put this off any longer, I can do this. I am an adult and I know this is what I want to do.” I plead. It’s not like I am fifteen and asking to move out. I am twenty years old and the only reason I am living here is because I have been waiting for this to happen.

My dad sighs, then says, “Looks like you better get packing.”

My eyes widen. “Seriously? Oh my Goodness, thank you so much. I love you!” I throw my arms around them both.

“We are so proud of you,” my mother tells me, eyes brimming with tears. I swallow the lump in my throat.

“I love you guys too, but don’t cry on me now, I’m not going anywhere yet.” I smile, then run upstairs and put down the two suitcases on the top self of my closet. I pack what I can, then call Parker.

“I have the best news!” I tell her.

“Oh my God…did you get the job?” She squeals.

“Yes! I can’t believe this is happening!” I grin.

“Congratulations! Looks like we’ll be seeing a lot of each other.” Parker tells me.

“I’m glad, I don’t think I will be able to spend all that time with those boys alone.” I admit.

“Don’t worry. You will be fine. But guess what I heard from Liam?”

“What?” I ask and I throw in a pair of jeans. I need more clothes for colder weather, not everywhere is going to be like Nashville.

“Lou isn’t going to be there the entire time, she has to take care of Lux.” Parker says.

“Who is Lux?”

Parker laughs a little bit. “Her daughter, she’s so cute. Lou’s husband got some new job so he can’t be there as much as he is used to. Don’t worry, you won’t be alone the entire time. She’ll be there to help you, but after she leaves you won’t be flying solo even then. You’ll have me, and other members of the crew of course.”

“Thank Goodness.” I breath.

“Amabel is coming too, I think she’s taking some online classes to keep up with her school studies.”

“That’s a good idea,” I agree. “I think I’m going to sign up for some, too.”

“Sounds good. Listen, I got to go, Harry is calling for me and God knows it’s not going to be about something good.”

I laugh, then say goodbye and hang up. I think about Louis and how he said he didn’t believe that I care about him. But I do, more than I should and I’m a little worried. My feelings for him aren’t too deep but I fear they will grow. That might not be so bad, though. I make a mental list of the pros and cons of keeping myself around Louis, but there are more cons than pros. My job will come before some crush that I have, he will not interfere with that whatsoever. I will not allow it. I worked hard for this, and some boy is not going to blow it.

*****

Being the genuis that I am, I have come up with a way to show Louis that we are friends, and although the word friends makes my heart ache a little bit, I have set him up with a girl. No, this girl is not someone I met twenty minutes ago in Target. She’s been a friend of mine for a long time, and I really think Louis will like her. As much as he says he doesn’t want to meet new people, life goes on and I feel like he’s not keeping up with it. Dating is a good way to do that so I set them up, and I still have to tell him about it. He might not be happy, but I am here to give him the push of encouragement that he needs.

Her name is Cassandra, or Cassie. If you call her by her full name, she will have your head. Most people don’t even know her full name. I have known Cassie almost my entire life, so I know most everything about her. She works at the nail salon at which I just resigned from. Diane was so kind to me when I called her and she wished me the best of luck.

“What if he hates me?” Cassie asks me as we park next to the bus. I told her that I got the job. Mr. McNeal called me about the good news yesterday. In three days we are leaving Nashville, and headed to some city that I already forgot the name of.

“He won’t hate you,” I assure her as she fixes her light brown hair over her shoulder for the sixth time since I picked her up. Cassie is not a fan of One Direction, but she does not dislike them. She tells me it’s because “their music is not what I listen to, I am not an eight year old girl.” I laughed at what she had said. Cassie is not afraid of speaking her mind, I guess we have that in common.

We enter the bus and everyone is there. “Who’s this?” Zayn asks.

“This is Cassie. Cassie, this is Harry, Amabel, Parker, Liam, Niall and Zayn…” I tell her, only we’re one person short. “Where’s Louis?”

“I’m right here,” He says, emerging from the bathroom.

I shove Cassie in his direction. “Louis, this is Cassie Barnett. Cassie, this is Louis Tomlinson.”

She smiles at him and says hello, then turns around and widens her eyes at me. I shoot her a wink. Louis looks over Cassie’s shoulder and I shrug. “It’s nice to meet you,” Louis smiles tightly.

I clap my hands together. “Alright, are you two ready to go?” Cassie nods.

“Go where?” Louis asks. Thank goodness he’s already dressed. If he wasn’t he wouldn’t go to the trouble.

“You and Cassie have a date.” I tell him with a smile.

“What?” He barks, eyes wide.

“You and Cassie are going to the Drive-In and then going to dinner. You get to pick the restaurant.” I explain.

Louis looks at me like I am crazy. “I don’t think so.”

“Please?” I beg, and Cassie looks very uncomfortable. Everyone else seems very entertained. “It’ll be fun.”

Louis sighs, running a hand through his hair. “Fine,” he says, giving in.

“Yay!” I jump up and down. “Have fun. Cassie, take my keys.” I give her the keys to my car.

Louis rolls his eyes and Cassie smiles at him. I grin as they awkwardly leave the bus. I peer out the window so I can see them walk to the car. “Looks like Cassie has a new stalker.” Zayn laughs.

I frown at him. “I’m just looking out for her.”

“I can’t believe you got him to go on a date.” Harry muses.

“Me either,” Liam chimes in and Niall agrees.

I shrug. “Cassie’s single, Louis’ single. Why not? Louis needs to get out more and we’re friends. Friends set up friends with other friends…right?”

“Yeah, why not?” Zayn agrees.

“Only Louis doesn’t date, not anymore.” Liam says.

I gulp. “He doesn’t?” My heart sinks.

“Not since…Eleanor.” Harry continues.

“I just thought maybe he would have a good time.” I say.

Zayn smiles. “We’re not saying it was a bad idea, we’re just saying that we are surprised that Louis said yes.”

“Oh,” I mumble, looking out the window. The jealous side of me wishes Louis said no, but I want him to be happy and I get the feeling he wouldn’t be happy with me anyways.
