1. Chapter One

In this town. In this town where you can never tell a lie from the real truth. Everyone has a secret, and everyone knows the truth, that none of us will ever know what the truth really is. This could be a lie, this could be a secret. But who will ever know? You can't trust anyone, and everyone else can't trust you. It's all just a phantom secret and it's really good at hiding. They're all just secrets in the wind.

**************************************************************************************

I get to first period late, same as every morning.

"Mrs. Myers, you're late." Says my Biology teacher who is still looking down at her list.

"I know, sorry." I am truly not sorry, I don't even like Biology.

I sit down at my desk next to Brandon.

"What happened this time?" He asks still looking at the teacher.

"Mom's car."

"I thought she got that fixed last week?" He looks at me.

"I thought so too." We stop talking while Mrs. Brenn hands out our homework.

"Are you walking home today?" I ask him.

"I can't, my mom wants me and my brother to go to the store with her later."

"So I have to walk home alone again?" I say in an annoyed tone.

"Sorry."

"I know." I say quietly disappointed and  turn back to my homework.

I know I said that in this town you can't trust anyone, but this is Brandon we're talking about. He's my best friend, and one of the only two people in this town that I can trust. There have only ever been two people in this world that I have been so close to. One of which was my father.. He died three years ago. No one knew how...or at least they wouldn't tell me. 'I'm just a kid' as my mom would say. The other person is well...my sister.

***

Finally the final bell rings and I walk out the door to my locker. When I start walking down the sidewalk to go home, I see Brandon's mom's car. She sees me and waves, I wave back. I always got along with his mom. She is a really nice woman...I would think. That's all we can do in this town...think. Think, think, think, never know.

As I walk down the sidewalk to go around the corner, I hear footsteps. I turn instantly, just to find a leaf blowing around on the ground. I sigh in relief and turn back around.

I have nothing better to do on this walk home so I end up looking around at the scenery. It is so gloomy all of the time in this town, so dark and creepy. Think of it as a gloomy, more dark and cloudy kind of Rosewood. It is the middle of fall, so on the days that it is sunny, I love looking at the giant orange/red tree in my back yard.

When I reach my house, I walk up the small porch steps and up to my front door. As I open it, you can hear the creaking of the wood and rusty hinges. As soon as I enter, I see my mom sitting on the couch watching TV. I shake my head and walk up stairs.

Upon entering my room, I hear a faint bark. My new puppy. His name is Harley. I drop my bag on my bed and pick him up. I leave with him in my hands and walk across the hall to my sister's room to find her sitting on her bedroom floor, playing with her dolls.

This town is run down. It doesn't have a lot of new places and things, so we make do with what we have.

My sister's name is Zoe, she has dark brown hair and dark brown eyes that differ from my blue ones. We used to laugh about how when we put our hair together, you couldn't tell the difference. We have a major age difference, I am 17 and she is 8. I know I can trust her, she doesn't tell secrets, and doesn't have any. She is young so any secret she might have would be about boys or friends.

"Hey, Zoo Zoo. Whatcha doin?" I use her nickname while sitting down next to her and letting the dog roam around.

"Playing with my dollies."

"Has mom been down there all day?" I ask, already knowing the answer. She nods. "Have you eaten?" She shakes her head no. I sigh. "Come on." I say standing up and holding my hand out to her.

"Where are we going?" She asks still sitting on the floor.

"Just come on." I grab the dog and we walk out of the room.

My mom is in a depressed state, she has been since my father died. She says she will try to find a job, but only ends up sitting on the couch and watching TV all day. She doesn't take care of Zoe like she used to. And the problem with her car, she had it fixed the other day and I guess it was something else, now since she doesn't have a job, we can't get it fixed.

I work at a diner up the street from my house. I am just working there until I earn enough money to leave this god forsaken place, and take my sister with me. She deserves a better role model. All she has been seeing for the past three years is laziness and drinking. I don't know if I can stand it much longer either. I go to sleep at night and she comes running in telling me she is hungry, that she hasn't eaten all day. I don't know what my mom thinks anymore. She can't just live like this.

I got Harley a week ago for free. I walked into work one day and there was a cardboard box sitting outside that said free, and there was one little black and brown puppy sitting at the bottom with a dirty white rag and a small empty bowl of food. I picked it up and it started licking my face. I knew it was going to be mine. I hid him in the back of the building until my shift was over then I brought him home with the bag of dog food.

I put my shoes back on and grab my bag. As I watch Zoe put her shoes on, I see a hand sized bruise around her wrist. My eyes grew big, she had been doing it again. I suspected but I didn't really know, now I do. I knew I had to get her out quickly and when we came back, I would have to sneak her in. I grab her bag and help her stuff her arm in her sweater sleeve. When we get to the end of the sidewalk, I stop.

"Hold my hand." I tell her.

She grabs my hand and we walk across the street. Finally after a few streets, we make it to the diner. I have earned and saved quite a bit of money for the apartment and I save a little for myself for dinners and lunches. I haven't spent that much of my food money plus I get a discount for working there, so I thought it would be a nice treat to buy me and my sister a nice dinner for a night.

***

After we order and get our food she eats it like she hasn't eaten in a year. I get my homework done at the same time and help her with hers.

***

We were on our way out of the diner and Zoe was walking in front of me. She looks up at the menu on the way by and then stops.

"Radly?"

"Yeah, Zoe?"

"Can we get an ice cream cone?"

I think about it for a minute, we haven't had ice cream in a few years. She deserves it.

"Yeah, let's go." We walk over and order our ice cream.

We sit back down at the same table and eat our ice cream. She lifts her arm up to her mouth to wipe away some of the ice cream, when her sleeve slides down, revealing the bruise. I know I shouldn't ask her but it is bothering me too much.

"Zoe?" She looks up at me with ice cream all over her mouth and chin. I smile, but it quickly fades. "What happened to your wrist?" She doesn't answer. "Did mom...hurt you?" She doesn't answer and looks like she is about to cry. "You know you can tell me right, tell me when she does that to you?"

She nods. "I know."

I nod. "Good. And I'm trying my hardest to get us out of there, you know that too right?" She nods yet again. And I follow by doing it too.

***

When we get home, it is dark out and the front porch light is off. Maybe she didn't even notice.

"Alright now, we have to be really quiet, okay?"

"Okay." I grab her hand and I gently, quietly open the door.

Just as we do this the front porch light comes on. We walk in and there is mom, sitting at the kitchen table right in front of the door and she has a giant glass of Vodka.

"Where have you two been?"

"I took her out."

"Where?"

"Just...out."

"I SAID WHERE." She yells, causing me to flinch.

I look down at Zoe and her eyes are glazed over.

I bend down and face her. "Zoe, go on upstairs, I'll be in there in a minute." I tell her. She runs past us and up the stairs.

"WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?" She yells for like the third time.

"I took Zoe out to eat since you didn't feed her." I snap.

"You did what?" She says with so much hatred, I think her head is going to blow.

"I took her to eat."

She stands up and takes a step towards me. "I think I hear wrong, you said you took her to eat? Without my permission?" She says with more hatred.

"I don't think I need your permission to feed my sister before she starves." I yell in her face. She slaps my right cheek. My head snaps to the side. I feel the sting of the pain right below my eye, I slowly look back at her. She continues to hit me, and I end up ducking away from her on the floor. I feel my flesh burning from the many blows. Then for some reason she lets me go. I look down to see threw the blur of my tears, my sister is pulling on her arm.

"Zoe, no." I yell.

Just as I say that, mom grabs her wrist and twists her around, throwing her into the wall. She begins to ball up on the floor and my mom kicks her in the leg, then the stomach. I quietly grab the bottle of Vodka she left on the table and as she is about to kick her again, I ram it onto her head. As she falls to the floor, I grab Zoe, cradling her head into my neck and run up the stairs.

"I'm so sorry Zoe, I'm so sorry."

I grab one of my duffel bags and stuff it with almost all of my stuff, my blankets, clothes, other stuff that's mine. I grab the dog food, bowls and his bed and stuff it all in my another bag along with some other stuff that I missed. Then I grab another bag and run to Zoe's room, grabbing all of her stuff as quickly as I can with a small amount of help from her. Peeking around the corner I see that my mom still lying on the floor. I take that as my time to run. We get to the door and she gets up. When we get to the sidewalk I looked back to see mom with her hand to the back of her head, running after us.

"Come back here." She keeps yelling.

I don't ever turn around.

**********************************************************************

We grab our bags and get off of the bus, Harley trailing along on his leash behind us.

"Where are we going now?" Zoe asks as we walk down the sidewalk to no where.

"Wherever the wind blows us." I smile to her and she smiles back.

***

We walk down the street, lined with lights and many buildings.

"Where are we?" She asks looking around.

I smile at our surroundings. "London." She looks up at me in shock. "Surprise."

"Thank you so much." She yells and hugs me. I hug her back. Ever since we started this whole running thing, she has been saying that she wants to go to London. So I thought I would surprise her.

"Where are we going to stay?" Zoe asks. But I really don't have an answer for that. After buying that bus ticket, I only have enough money for one night in a hotel.

"We need to find a hotel."

***

"How would you like to pay for the room?" I hear that question for like the one millionth time.

"Cash." The lady nods and types some things into the computer.

I pay her and she hands me a slip card. "Thanks for coming." She fake smiles. "Oh and here." She hands me another key.

"What's this for?" I ask her.

"The dog room. If you want to have that dog with you, you need to keep it in there." This is the first hotel I have ever been to where they have a room for pets, let alone even allow them.

I look at the tag hanging from the key that says the floor and room number.

We take the elevator to the third floor and search for room 314. As soon as I walk in I am surrounded by all kinds of dogs. They are all smelling my legs and jumping on me.

"Hello." I greet. "The lady at the front desk told me to bring my dog up here."

"Hello." The younger one says. "All you have to do is sign these papers." She hands me some papers. She grabs her camera and takes a photo of Harley. She saw the funny look I was giving her. She chuckles. "We just do this so we don't get the dogs mixed up form their owners." I nod and continue to fill out the papers. I give her Harley's leash and thank her. We walk back to the hallway and take the elevator to the top floor where our room will be.

We find our room and I slide the slip card into the scanner. When it beeps, I take the card out and we walk in. The hotel was really nice. I wanted Zoe to have a nice time no matter what I had to spend. It's not like we would be here for long anyway. She always finds a way to find us and tries to take Zoe away from me. This is the furthest we have ever gone so she shouldn't be able to find us for a while.

"I'm gonna take a shower, then we can go do something. Okay?" I ask as Zoe starts to go through her bag. She looks up and nods.

I take a shower and put on some of my clean clothes. We each got a new outfit while we were in New York and I haven't wore it, now would be the time.
