Running to Stratford, she hoped that she could finally have some peace for a while, but when the thunder rolls, and the lightning strikes, memories flashes by...

12. The New Guy

I looked at the picture one last time, before I buried it in the bottom of the box. I would never, ever, look at that picture again. IT brought back too many good and bad memories, and moving here to Stratford was supposed to be a new beginning, so it didn’t help me that I was looking at old pictures of family and boyfriends. I put the shoebox back in my closet, before closing it.

I grabbed my bag and ran downstairs to where Nathan and Cooper was waiting for me. When they saw me, they smile and I send them one in return. Today was my first school day since I had been in L.A and I was feeling happy. I yelled a goodbye to Keith before closing the door and walking down the sidewalk along with my brothers.

As we walked through the doors of the school, everyone seemed excited. Everyone was smiling, laughing and chatting with each other. Even some the nerds seemed excited. It was kind of creepy actually.

Ashley and Ryan were standing by her locker with Justin and the rest of his crew. I told my brothers goodbye before heading their way. When Ashley saw me, she smiled a warm smile. I approached them with my arms wide open.

“Hey guys.” I hugged Ashley and Ryan. Nodded at Justin’s crew, and hugged Justin. Everyone looked at me with these extremely happy faces. I swear, what is up with people today? I raised an eyebrow at my friends, but when they didn’t say anything, but giggle, I felt hopeless. They obviously weren’t gonna say what was going on, on their own.

“Okay, spit it. Why is everyone so happy today? Why is everyone smiling and laughing? Did Mrs. Plummer finally quit?” I asked. If Mrs. Plummer had finally quit her job as our Math teacher, I would also be smiling and laughing. But something told me it wasn’t that, that made the students go nuts.

“Unfortunately, no.” Ryan said.

“Okay if it isn’t that, then what the hell makes you all act so goddam weird?! Please tell me. It’s driving me insane…” I admitted. Ryan and Ashley chuckled.

“Nothing is going on, Em. We’re just happy to have you back in school, after you have been sick for so long. We are just glad that you’re okay.” Justin said, while trying to hide that smirk of his. But I saw it Bieber! And you better not be messing with me.

“Sure.” I said, not believing a single word he said. However, I decided to let it go and see what would happen. If Justin is planning some prank, I’m going to kill him. I sent them one last look of disbelief before heading towards my locker to get my books for Science class.

I walked through the doors of Science and took my usual seat. I was sitting next to Justin who was in my class, but it seemed like he ditched me today, because he was nowhere to be seen.

I leaned my head against my palm and led my eyelids fall to the sound of Mr. Hartmann talking about neutrons and protons. Stuff I was never going to use in my life.

Occasionally I opened my eyes, just so I wouldn’t get in trouble for sleeping in class. No one in the class was paying attention to what the teacher said. Instead, they were whispering away about something I couldn’t make out. I decided that all this craziness had to come to an end.

Spinning around on my chair, I looked at the guy behind me. I hadn’t seen him before, he must be new.

“Yo, dude.” I said. It caught his attention. He looked at me with his pretty green eyes and I must admit I lost control of my words for a few seconds when I saw his face. He was pretty damn hot.

“Yeah?“ The guy without a name said. I cleared my throat and smiled.

“Do you know what is going on since everyone seems overly excited? It’s weird.” I said. He chuckled. His brown hair was covered by a black snapback and his eyes looked straight into mine. He smiled an adorable half smile before answering.

“Yeah, something about it being Prom night on Wednesday. And the girls are freaking out because it’s the boys that haves to invite the girls, so all the girls are hoping for this one dude to ask them. I think his name was Jason Bieber or maybe it was Justin. I don’t know.” He answered with a smile and a shrug of his shoulders.

“His name is Justin. He’s a friend of mine. But why are they freaking out like this? It’s just prom.” I said. And of course, it had to be there where everyone was listening.

Just Prom?!” Caroline, the bitch that had been harassing Ashley before I came, said with disbelief in her voice.

“Yeah, just prom.” I answered coldly.  She huffed. “It’s just a night where popular people can show off even more, and get even more attention.” I said, disgusted.

“You’re only thinking like that because no one would invite you to prom. And you can’t blame them. Who would want to go to prom with someone who would wear that to school?” She said and laughed. But she was laughing alone. That was the kind of affection I had made on this school. No one really dared to take her side ever since I had showed up and kicked Justin’s butt.

“I don’t know if you have noticed yet, but no one is laughing with you, Caroline. You’re alone. No friends, no power, and I bet that you don’t even have a date yet. Am I right? I am. Because you’re waiting for Justin to ask you to prom. But it won’t happen, because Justin have changed. He’s not into sluts anymore. He has actually lifted his standards a little. Enjoy your prom.” I said as I got up from my chair.

The bell rang through the building and I smiled at the guy who’s-name-is-still-unknown, before exiting the room and towards my locker. I felt satisfied with my comeback for Caroline. She was just a bitch who deserved a slap across the cheek. But I didn’t get into useless fights anymore.

I reached my locker where I threw in my books. As I slammed my locker shut to get to my next class, I noticed the same guy from Science. He was standing right next to me, looking at his phone with one hand on his locker.

“Are you stalking me?” I asked him. The sudden sound made him jump a little. He turned his head to look at me and smiled when he saw me.

“Sorry, but no. Stalking is only Thursdays. Monday is my day off.” He said and I couldn’t help but giggle. He smiled and stuck out his hand. “I’m Sam.” He introduced himself. I took his hand and shook it.

“I’m Emily. Nice to meet you Sam. You’re new here, right?” I asked.

“Yeah, I’m the newbie. So I’m keeping low profile. Don’t want to draw too much attention to yourself on your first day, right?” He said and chuckled.

“I don’t know about that Sam. I drew a lot of attention to myself on my first day.” I told him honestly. His green eyes stared into my blue ones as he flashed me a smile.

“Oh really? What did you do? Start a food fight in the cafeteria?” He laughed.

“Nah. I kinda kicked the guy who runs the school’s ass. But it’s okay, because now he’s one of my best friends. Ironic right?” I shook my head at the thought of how Justin and I’s friendship started. The bell rang, indicating that we had to get to the next class. Sam smiled at me as he shut his locker shut.

“Tough girl. I like that. Well, I guess I’ll see you around then?” He asked, a small amount of hope in his voice.

I nodded. “Hopefully.” I said as I smiled at him one last time before walking off to my next class.

I walked into the cafeteria after biology and found my usual seat next to Nathan. Ashley, Ryan and Justin were nowhere to be seen, but the rest of Justin’s crew sat around the table, playing some game on their phone. Everywhere around me, people were talking about the prom. And as on cue..

“Riley! She’s here.” Riley’s head shot up and his eyes locked on a pretty brown haired girl. He got up, adjusted his snapback a little and went over to the girl. After a few smiles, Riley had a date to the prom.

“So, Emily. What are wearing to the prom?” Noah asked.

“Mhm.. I think I’m gonna wear I’m-not-going and to match that I think I’m going to wear a pair of I-would-rather-die.” I said and winked at him. Nathan and Cooper burst out laughing. They were laughing so loud that the rest of the cafeteria turned their heads to look at our table.

“Shut it. It wasn’t that funny.” I said while trying to stop laughing myself. As I turned my head to look at the people looking at us, I caught sight of a black snapback and a pair of green eyes. It was the guy from Science. I smiled as I got up from my seat and walked towards him. He was standing in line to get some food when I approached him with a smile.

“Hey Sam. Funny to see you here, eh?” I said lamely. He chuckled and grabbed his trait. He turned his attention to me as he walked toward an empty table. I followed him close behind.

“You do know that was lame, right?” He chuckled. I nodded embarrassed. He laughed. We past the table some of the popular people were sitting at, and the cheerleaders glared at me as if I had killed someone. Well, I kind of have, but they don’t know that.

Sam sat down at the table and I followed his example. I caught a sight of Nathan and Cooper looking at me with weird expressions on their faces. What’s up with them? I started chatting with Sam. He told me about why he moved here, about his family and some of his goals in life.

I listened carefully to every single word he said. There was something about Sam, which I really liked. I don’t know if it’s his honesty, or whatever, but he just seems like a type of guy I’ve never met before.

Just as I was about to ask him another question, the sound of someone yelling in the hallway, made me stop dead in my tracks. The voice sounded familiar but I couldn’t tell exactly who it was before a body flew through the doors of the cafeteria and Justin was lying on the ground, supporting his body weight on his elbow.

My eyes caught Nathan and Cooper’s, and we all looked confused. As I got up and walked towards Justin, a person I had seen before, but couldn’t place, walked through the doors. His eyes locked on Justin, and his hands clenched into fists by his side. He looked furious.

He grabbed Justin by his shirt and pulled him to his feet. Justin caught my eye. I pointed to my left side, just below the last rib and mimicked ‘hard’. Justin understood and slammed a rock hard fist into the guy, who got so surprised that he let go of Justin, who quickly hit him in the jaw so he felt to the ground. I walked over to him with an unpleased look on my face.

“Justin! What did you do now?” I hissed, low voiced. Justin was just about to speak up when another voice made me turn around in shock.

“Emily?” I looked at the guy who was now standing up again. When I heard his voice, every little piece fell into place. I couldn’t help it, but stare at him in shock. He had changed so much, but somehow still managed to stay the same.

“Seth?” I asked low voiced. His smile grew bigger, when all I did was stepping away a few feet. Without looking, I knew that Nathan and Cooper were standing behind me, ready to do the necessary. I tried to speak, but the words wouldn’t come out.

Just as I had decided to forget the past, put it behind me and forget the people that belonged there, one of them just had to show up and fuck me up. I swallowed hard as I tried to regain my confidence. I could feel everyone’s eyes on me. And before I realized what I was doing, I had clenched my hands into rock hard fists and was ready to attack him.

But Nathan grabbed my arm as it flew through the air and stopped me just before my fist collided with his face. I turned around and looked at him. The look in his eyes told me that fighting wasn’t the way to solve this. We needed to talk to him. Sighing, I rubbed my face hard, and left the cafeteria while everyone was holding their breath, just waiting to see what happened.

As I heard someone walk through the front door, I slammed my math book shut, giving up on making my homework. I heard footsteps coming closer, and stopping right outside my door. Slowly but determinant, the door opened, revealing Justin. He had a confused but demanding look on his face. His eyes told me not to fuck with him at this very moment. He wanted answers, and he wanted them now.

Without greeting me, he walked into my room, and shut the door closely behind him. His eyes found their way to mine and we had a small battle of will. He wanted answers, and I wouldn’t give them to him voluntarily.

Our strong wills caused us to stare at each other for ten minutes straight without even talking to each other, before Justin finally gave in and asked me the question he wanted to know the answer too so deeply. His lips slightly parted as his tongue rolled over his pink plumb lips before words rolled off his tongue.

“Who is he? Where do you know him from?” He demanded to know. I could tell he was frustrated by the small wrinkle he got between his eyes. When I think about it, it looked adorable.

“You mean Seth? The person who almost kicked your ass in school today? He’s a part of my past. The past that’s the reason I am sitting in this very house today. A part of the past, I promised to let go. That is all I can tell you without breaking down. So please, do not ask more questions.” I whispered. The sorrow between Seth and I was too deep, and both of us promised to never mention it again.

Justin looked confused. He looked annoyed that I was still keeping secrets from him after all we had been through together. But he must have heard how fragile I sounded, because he just sighed and looked away. His brown hair was covered by the usual black snapback.

He had his hands folded on his knees as if he was praying. His chin lying upon them, and his eyes closed as he breathed in deeply.

I slowly stood up from my chair and walked over to where he was sitting on my bed. I sat down next to him and rested my head on his shoulder. I breathed in his cologne and smiled a little.

“I provoked him, ya know.” Justin whispered slowly.

“What do you mean?” I asked as I removed my head from his shoulder. Justin opened his eyes and turned his head to look at me. His brown eyes were darker than usual.

“Seth. I provoked him to hit me. I wanted to show you that I could be tough too. He was the biggest guy I could find that would be stupid enough to hit me. But he was stronger than I thought. If it hadn’t been for your advice, he would have humiliated me in front of the whole school.” He whispered. He turned his face so I couldn’t look at him.

“Why would you want to impress me?” I whispered back slowly. Justin didn’t look at me. He looked out of the window, like he thought the wind would answer my question. “Justin.” I said more demanding. He turned his head to face me. His hazel brown eyes stared into mine as we shared something none of us were used to.

“Because-“ The door was opened without a knock. And in my door, he stood. His short brown hair and muscle worked arms. His left arm was covered in tattoos. His eyes locked on me as he stepped into the room without permission.

I could feel how the tension in the room only grew bigger by the second. Justin was sitting next to me with his eyes closed and hands folded between his legs. Seth was leaning up the door, making it impossible for anyone to come in if anything was going to happen. And myself? I felt how the tears were threatening to fall.

“Seth. What are you doing here?” I managed to get out without my voice trembling. His eyes were cold and dark as he turned his lips into a cold smile.

“I’m here to find out what is going on. Why you moved from L.A and why I’m finding you in a bed with another guy. Do you really think it’s fair? Do you really think so? You are pathetic. Giving up on him like that. Jacob was right. You are nothing but a slutty whore. It is your fault he is gone. I should kill you with my bare hands now where I’ve finally found you, you coward.” He took a step toward me.

His words were running through my head like a movie. He’s gone. Your fault.. Whore. Pathetic. A loud noise made me snap out of the thoughts. It came from downstairs. Even Seth looked surprised. The sound of someone running up the stairs, made Seth jump out of the window. He jumped down the roof just in time for my brothers to break down my door.

The sight of them was such a relief. Keith embraced me, soothing me with his caring words, while Nathan asked Justin what had happened. I got lost to the sound of Keith’s heartbeat. The last thing I remember before passing out was Justin that mentioned what Seth had said about me.

Darkness is a weird thing. Some people are afraid of it some people fascinate it. And others, like myself, tend to wake up in the middle of the night because we feel like someone is watching us from the dark.

I sat up straight in my bed as I reached over to my nightstand to turn on my little green lamp. I rubbed my eyes and unlocked my phone to see what time it was. It was only midnight, but it still scared me that I had been sleeping since four pm.

I got up as I grabbed a hoodie from my drawer and crawled out on the roof. As I sat on the roof, a familiar voice spoke, not so far away.

Justin walked over to where I was standing and gave me a hug. A good, long, loving hug that I hadn’t gotten in a while.

“Em?” Justin said as we sat down at my roof, just looking at the stars. I mumbled my answer, getting lost by the sight in front of me. Millions and millions of stars above us. It couldn’t be more beautiful.

“Em, I really like you.” Those words made me snap my head towards Justin. He was looking down, denying to look at me.

“What did you just say?” I asked him slowly.

“You heard me.” He said as he stood up fast. “I, Justin Drew Bieber, am completely and utterly in fucking love with you. Why can’t you see that? You make my heart skip, not one, but a million beats. Whenever I’m around you, you make me happy. You bring out the worst in me. And for some reason, it turns out that what I thought was the worst in me, is the best thing! You make me the person I want to be, but knowing that any guy can come and take you whenever, it is killing me inside! I just wanna hold you tight and never, ever, let you go! Because, this might be the first time that I’m loving someone, but I know that if you give me a chance I won’t ever have to love someone again, because you and I belong together. Can’t you see that Emily? You aren’t perfect, what the heck, who is? But in my eyes, you are the closest thing to perfect. I don’t know everything that has happened to you in your past, but I don’t have too if it means that I get to call you mine. So please, Emily, will you please say yes when I, in a minute, ask you to be my girlfriend?” He finished his speech to catch the breath he hadn’t been able to catch before now.

I was lost for words. And for every second that went by, I could see how he got more and more disappointed. The truth is, that I have been in love with this kid, since the first week. I’ve just been denying my feelings for him. Why can’t I get one simple word over my lips? Because the last person that said, that he loved me, ended up disappearing.

“Justin, I-I..” I was lost. “I’m in love with you too.” I finally managed to choke out. I tried to catch my breath, but it was impossible because of how fast my heart was racing.

When he embraced me in a tight hug, I started crying. Why? You might think. Because I knew from that moment where those words left my lips, that was my turning point. I was never going to feel alone anymore. I have my Justin. My sweet, sweet Justin.

Never did I think that I was going to fall in love again, until you came around.
