6. Ch. 6. Oregon

My hands travel up the walls, soaking in all the memories of this house. I've lived here my whole life, and I never expected to leave it like this. I eventually find my suitcases, and I sit on them, looking around the place I have called home for the past seventeen years. Soon I will have to trade in this marvelous house from Maryland for a small apartment into Oregon with my brother. It's strange to think that just a few weeks ago I was on top of the world. My brother was always there helping me with my guitar and music career, my parents right down the hall, and knowing every single creak in the floorboards from a mile away.

I start to think about my parents, and how they died.

"Lightning hit the oil compartment right next to your parents' room. The boat had a fire and immediately cracked almost in half. Your parents were the only ones that didn't make it. I'm sorry, Dylan." The police officer tells me.

"Where will I go?" I whisper.

She replies, "You will move in with your brother for now." She grabs my hand. "I know how you're feeling. You'll get through this. I know you can," she says softly. I look into her soft green eyes. Whenever she gets up to leave, I stop her.

"Thank you." She nods before she slowly walks out the door.

Tears again begin to fall down my face. I wipe them away, and start to pray.

"God," I whisper, "please help me. I know my parents would hate me being sad, so please change my thoughts. Please, God."

Somehow, my mood lightens immediately. I smile to myself. No matter what, at least He is there for me.

Soon my brother opens the door, waking me from my thoughts. Right when he sees me, he runs towards me and engulfs me into a hug.

"I love you so much, Dylan. I've missed you so much," he tells me as he holds me close. I pull away enough so I can look into his eyes.

"Me, too." I say before pulling him back towards me into another hug.

After our little reunion, he carries my bags to his car. He motions for me to get in, but before I do I run into the house and kiss my parent's bedroom door.

"Goodbye," I whisper, to my parents, my house, my friends, school, the town, the memories, and most importantly, to the guilt. I jog back to the SUV and meet my brother's confused face.

"Had to do something," I tell him. He nods.

"Ready to go?" He asks me as he starts up the car.

"I'm ready for anything."

Lewis smiles before pulling away from my old house and memories. But I don't look back.

Soon enough, I fall into a dreamless sleep.

"Psst. Dilly, wake up. We're at the hotel." Lewis whispers to me. I pull myself up and stretch.

"What time is it?" I ask him.

He chuckles. "Ten." My eyes bulge. I've been sleeping for twelve hours!

He laughs again at my response. "Well, here in Montana, anyway." I punch him lightly in the arm, He holds it while giving me a face.

"Jerk." He calls as he makes his way into the hotel. I laugh as I grab my bag and head in after him.

Whenever I set it the lobby, I cringe at the smell of bleach and chlorine. As I look around me, I nearly puke at the water stains on the ceiling, the dirt on the rug, the chipping of the paint on the malls, and the mouse traps on the floor. I lean towards Lewis.

"Why did you pick this place exactly?" I whisper to him. He shrugs.

"Only thing available. It may not be five stars, but at least it's somewhere to sleep." I nod. I guess I'll have to suck it up for Lewis.

"Hey, can you check in? Tell him we'll leave tomorrow morning by eleven. I have to go to the bathroom." He hands me a couple hundred dollars before scurrying off. I shrug as I go up to the desk, and to the young teenage boy behind it who looks me up and down. I grimace before going up to him. He smirks at me.

"Hello, what rooms do you have open for tonight? Me and my brother are just staying for the night." I ask him as sweetly as I can. He leans in close to my face, staring at me with big hazel eyes.

"Well, I do have some room in my bed," He smirks as bile comes up my throat,"but only for one." He leans back with an evil smile plastered on his smug face, which I have to admit is quite attractive with his big hazel eyes matching his short dark brown hair. I lean close to his ear.

"Sorry, but my brother is married. Not tonight." I whisper. To my surprise, he laughs.

"I have to say, that was a good one. I'll now show you some respect," he tells me, "Anyway, we have plenty of rooms, including the penthouse, and I'd have to say the penthouse is the best room. It doesn't have any rats." he laughs at my look of disgust. "It's also our most expensive room, though. But I wouldn't call it expensive. It is 115 dollars a night for that one."

"I'll take it," I tell him as I hand him the money while he hands me the keys.

"Fourth floor, room 356." I smile at him.

He gives me a genuine smile. "No problem."

The next day, Lewis and I finally get to his  apartment, which Vicki comes out of to greet us. She gives me a hug.

"I missed you so much, I can't explain it." I smile at her sadly.

"I missed you, too."

Lewis and Vicki hug, and whenever they pull away, Vicki and Lewis say in sync,

"Welcome to Oregon, Dylan!"
