Stars

I've loved the stars ever since I was born. I would sit out every night and watch them dwindle away to little specks in the morning. I would also see these other creatures that ruined nearly every evening. No one else I had met saw them. They thought I was sick, but I wasn't . Those monsters were far too real, and I had to help the other 4 people who could also see them, get rid of them. I would be part of the biggest, yet secretive war there is. And it would be all because of the stars.

6. THE lecture

After we had left the many tunnels beneath the ground, we came up to find a large campfire with three people sitting around it. They were just talking about how they were and what they had been up to lately. When we did finally arrive, the three became completely silent and turned around. All eyes were on me.

"I have found her," said the boy.

"Well done, Narfell. Have you found out what her gift is yet?" said a voice from within the small group.

"Yes! I have, she's a body changer, the first of her kind."

"And what are her limitations?" asked the voice again.

   "I'm not sure, I-"

"I can only change into animals that are within one mile of me. The further they are from me, the harder they are to change into. I know I'm getting stronger because it's getting easier to change into these animals now. With training, I could reach further than a mile," I butted in.

"Thank you Ismarai," said the voice, who I guessed was the leader of the group. "I understand you received a letter from Elainor not so long ago. Correct?"

   "Yes," I replied.

   "Do you have the letter?"

   "Yes."

"Can you get it out and read it?"

"Okay," I did as I was told. The paper was creased as it had been in the pocket in my night gown for several weeks. "Dear Ismarai. I understand many people think you have Schizophrenia but I understand, you do not. You see creatures. They can disguise themselves as any animal, but they are not hard to determine from other real animals. I would like to invite you to a meeting, to join this group of us fighting these creatures. Currently, we are in hiding from the war. If you join now, you shall be our main weapon; we have the element of surprise. If you would like to join, please write back to me. I would like to invite you to our next meeting. If you wish to join me, which I really encourage, come to Beaumont Alley. You must look carefully at the fence on the left and you will see slight differences in the fence, these are known as panels. Count up to the fifth on the left and knock this rhythm," here there were some notes so I knew what to knock. "Please reply before you come-"

"So why didn't you reply?" the voice butted in. I was lost for words, I didn't know why I hadn't written back.

   "Exactly," another voice chimed in.

I looked around and noticed that Elainor wasn't there. I voiced my concern.

"She was never part of the organisation," the leader stated flatly.

"But how come she said so in the letter?" I replied.

"She is a supporter of this group and was part of our outreach program. Elainor traveled to many schools looking for more people who had gifts like yours. She was simply an actor, helping us to find you."

"Wait, at the end of the letter, it's signed by Elainor. But if she's not part of the group then that place was a fake location. We are nowhere near Beaumont Alley. You set me up! That encounter I had with the, the... thing-"

   "Dream creature-"

"Yes, was a set up. You wanted me dead didn't you. You betrayed me!"

"CALM DOWN!" said the leader in a harsh but calm voice. "We didn't set you up, we merely set you a test. You see Ismarai, we sent you there because we knew there would be an ambush there. We were going to send Victoria," Victoria held up her hand and bobbed her head down. "To that location. Our spies told us that the Dream Creatures were planning an ambush and so we sent you instead. We wanted to see how good you were at handling them and, well, you were very good. Narfell here, observed you while you were fighting and gave you the rating: Advanced. You are the strongest Dream fighter here. We didn't set you up, this was your test." It was a lot to take in. I had to sit down and think about it a while. My whole life had just been one big observation! Once I was ready to talk again and I had thought about every thing I had just been told, we gathered around the fire and started to talk about our current position in the war.
