Finally! It’s here! My first day at Greenrange half and half! It’s my first half and half and I can’t wait! For all of primary I’ve had to pretend that I was just a human. But know I’ll be able to be myself. Around the gifteds anyway. I couldn’t even use my gift at primary. My gift is to sense others gifts, pretty useless really but I really want to use it sometime. It does come with a sort of built in lie detector, which is pretty cool but again I can only use it on gifteds. Usually gifteds can sense others messing about with their minds but they can’t with mine for some reason. I really can’t wait to get there. It’s going to be awesome! I haven’t used gift in so long, I hope I still know how. You see I’m in care. Surrounded by loads of humans. You can’t get too close to humans, just incase they discover about the gifted. Not that I’d want to get close to anyone in that place that I’m supposed to call home. It’s like a prison; where you send all the bad kids. Actually that is what it is, for the lucky ones. If you’ve got no one to look after you then that means they’re dead. If they’re not then they chucked you out because you we’re trouble. May as well be straight about it. Complaining won’t get you anywhere. My Mum left after I was born, hated Dad and kids. Dad never complained. That’s why he died. He didn’t like saying no. So he always got sent on the most dangerous jobs. He was a spy. A special one, sent under cover into enemy bases. Usually, he worked behind the scenes. Pretending to be with the person that they were trying to put into prison. He had to work with the criminal to get a story together for court. He was always in danger. If the criminal decided that he wasn’t good enough then he could quietly kill him. He was like me. He could tell if someone is lying. His gift combined with his dislike of saying “no” made him very easy for the spy leaders to manipulate him. They also used him to interrogate people, for obvious reasons. Before his last mission I always thought that his bosses were ok. He chose to be a spy and you have to be ready to give your life. They were just making the most of a great agent. But his last mission was a step too far. They sent him to a war zone. They made him pretend to be an enemy soldier. It was to find out the enemy plans. But we all knew it would take years for them to trust him enough to tell him their plans. We all knew, but no one said. It wasn’t until after that I knew. They didn’t even tell me, I had to eaves drop when they were talking after my dad left our kitchen after the mission briefing. They didn’t even care about what happened to him! He was 40. They had found a 20 something year old with his gift so they didn’t really need him anymore. It was a useless mission that they would never send anyone on usually. They didn’t really need the information. It would just get rid of him. He would either die or be away for years and probably want to retire. They said it was urgent and that he needed to go straight away, they would provide everything he needed. No time to say bye properly. He gave me a quick hug and an I love you, see you soon, overseen by his two big bosses. He had to say see you soon. I was five. It was always less painful if we pretended everything was ok. We both knew it wasn’t. But we didn’t argue or burst into tears. We didn’t like saying no. One of the bosses took him to the headquarters and then the airport. The other was to wait with me. He was the bigger of the two. He didn’t care about anyone. He just wanted to get the highest rank possible, be famous in the spy community. We went outside to wave goodbye but I didn’t want to. What difference would it make? It would spoil our pretend game. We were seeing each other soon. But we weren’t. The driver looked like he was focusing but he had a hint of sympathy burning away in the darkest corner of his mind. My dad was completely blank. Staring straight ahead. He looked calm but his mind was all over the place. Zipping about in random directions. He was trying to calm himself down. He was trying to convince himself that our game was real. He knew that I could see what he was thinking. Because he has the same gift as me, he could sense me in his mind. He turned to me and I stood still, solemn expression to go with my thoughts. I gave him a small nod, he did the same. The car slowly pulled out of our drive and disappeared over the hill. That was the last I saw of him. I looked up at the man, he was smiling.

“Shall we go inside? Daddy will call soon.”

I started at him, anger boiling up inside me.

“Come on then.” He was a short. In fact, he was the perfect height. With a quick thrust of my right foot, I made contact with his privates and ran as fast I could. Despite my pure outrage I couldn’t help but laugh. One of the top spies in the country outwitted by a five year old. I looked back to see him crumpled on the floor. He probably wouldn’t bother to chase after me. He was killing my only family so who would care about me? I was right, he didn’t chase after me. I led a life on the road. Yeah it was hard but I had everything I needed plus the power to tell if someone was lying which is very useful on the street and if there were any gifteds then I could use my common power of putting an idea in their heads to give me something. I couldn’t use it on humans because of my other gift, which was bad, but it meant that the gifteds couldn’t tell what I was doing so it ended up ok. I was very clever for my age and I still am now, I always seem to be one step ahead. But I couldn’t control everything. I planned on staying homeless all my life in a way it was better than a normal life but social services had to step in didn’t they. One day a man came up to me, human. He asked if I was all right. I said yes but he wouldn’t go away. He asked if I wanted to go home with him. I checked he was telling the truth and he was but I saw that he worked at a care home so I said no. I wouldn’t have said yes even if he was offering his own house I preferred it out there. I shook my head. He slipped a twenty before leaving. He put on a great act. I really thought he was leaving. He showed no trace in his mind that he was coming back but he did. It was about an hour later. Summer so it was still bright. He came and said that he had come to help and that he was going to get me safe. I turned to run but he’d brought reinforcements, they had he surrounded. Any other kid would be terrified that they were a gang or something, come to rob or kill them or something. But I knew they were telling the truth. I wasn’t going to make a scene; they were going to catch me eventually so I just sat down and let the man pick me up. I was ten but I wasn’t that tall and my street diet kept me light. He took me back to the home in a people carrier with the others that he brought to take me. Ever since then I’ve been trapped in care. They said they liked me because I didn’t argue but that’s just because I don’t like saying no. But I know they that they think I’m creepy, I mean I can tell when they lie. I know I’m creepy. I don’t know what else to be. I don’t know how to be myself; I’ve never had the chance because I’ve always had to hide. I only got to be myself for five years with my Dad. Even then I had to stay with a human while he was away which could have been a couple of months. That’s why I’m looking forward to this half and half so much; I’ll actually be able to be myself.
