9. Chapter 8: "Do you think there is such a thing as evil?"

Sitting on the windowsill, I was looking out of the window, watching a
few policemen in Mr. Jenkons' fitness room and a few surrounding Mrs.
Barkers lifeless and bloody body. I shivered at the mess of blood on and
around her and closed my eyes. I knew what had happened, but I couldn't
realise it was real. I turned my head and stared at the white wall,
which separated our apartments. Suddenly, his face appeared in front of
me and I pressed my back against the wall. The blood that was dripping
from his chin, the fangs that were shown when he was panting heavily and
growling now and then, his golden-red eyes which were staring into mine.
I closed my eyes and felt a tear strike down my cheek. I leaned my head
in my hands and breathed deep in and out before re-opening my eyes. As I
looked back outside, I noticed an ambulance standing outside. I probably
was too deep in my thoughts to even notice the sirens of it. The
policemen and other people were taking pictures in Mr. Jenkons'
apartment and of Mrs. Barkers body. I wondered if Harry had also killed
Mr. Jenkons'. The flashback of Harry attacking Mrs. Barkers flew in my
mind and I felt my hands starting to shake yet again. Before I could
deepen myself in my thoughts again, the doorbell stopped me. I hopped
off the windowsill and made my way to the hallway.

"Mum," I said and opened her bedroom door, but found nobody. "Mum!" I
yelled and closed her bedroom door, but got no answer. I walked towards
the frontdoor, stood on my tippy toes and saw the same policeman that
wanted to get through the crowd at school standing in front of it.
Slowly, I opened the door and totally forgot I was already in my pj's,
but he didn't seem to care.

"Hi Mrs. Moonsky," He started and reached out his hand. I slowly took it
and shook it gently.

"Hello." I answered and he flashed me a smile.

"Are your mum and dad home?" He asked and I shook my head in response.

He nodded and sighed. "I guess you saw us working things out in the
playground and in Mr. Jenkons' house." He said and trailed off,
expecting an answer of me so I nodded slightly.

"We're just going around, asking what people maybe have seen which can
help us with doing the research. So have you seen any weird things or
any people that have been acting weird lately?" He asked and looked
me intensely in the eyes with his dark-brown ones.

"No." I lied as I was still holding the door only halfway open.

"Okay, then we won't disturb you anymore. Goodnight.", He said and
nodded once towards me before walking away towards Harry's door. I
quickly closed mine and leaned my forehead against it as I sighed. I
heard the doorbell of Harry's apartment ringing, but it kept repeating.
I stood on my tippy toes again and looked out of the little window to
see the policeman standing in front of Harry's door. He rang the
doorbell again, but again received no answer. He sighed before walking
away and I heard his footsteps getting softer and softer. I slowly
walked back towards my room and looked out of the window, to see Mrs.
Barkers body being lifted into the ambulance and the policemen driving
away in their cars.

I grabbed my phone, dialed my father's number and waited until it was

"Hello?" I heard my dads' sleepy voice.

"Hey dad, it's me.", I said and sat down on the windowsill again.

"Hey sweetie, why are you calling this late?" He asked and I looked out
of the window, to see all the people were gone.

"Can I talk to you?" I asked.

"Sure, what is wrong?"

I inhaled deep and closed my eyes. "Do... Do you think... t-there is
such a thing as /evil/?" I asked him and felt a tear running down my cheek.

"What? What are you talking about August?" He asked astonished.

"Do you think people can be evil?" I asked him and felt more tears
escaping my eyes and my breathing becoming irregular.

"August what are you getting on? Is this about our divorce? Do you have
to do this in order of your mum? Is she really this bitchy?" My dad said
in an angry tone.

"Dad this isn't in order of mum." I whispered.

"August give me your mum, I want to talk to her right this instant." He

"She's not here.", I said and ran a hand through my blond hair.

"Alright, but tell her to call me, okay?"

"Yes dad."

"Listen, I want you to get that crap out of your head, okay? Your
mother, she... she has problems, but it's not your fault, okay?" He said
and I broke down crying.

"August please don't cry, I have to go I'm sorry. Tell your mum she
needs to call me."

"Okay." I croaked out and leaned my head against the wall.

"I love you August, I'll see you soon."

"Love you too, bye dad.", I said and quickly hang up the phone before
throwing it across the room. With my head down, I walked towards
the full-sized mirror and looked up. I saw myself, my eyes red and puffy
from crying, dark circles under them, my lips lightly tinned blue
because of the cold, my hair cascading my face and my petite body which
looked like it could break by only throwing a piece of paper at it. With
my right hand, I stroked the left-side of my neck, where Harry wanted to
attack me. Suddenly, I wondered why Harry hadn't bit me. Without
thinking, I walked away from the full-sized mirror and walked towards
the place where I had a big chance of dying, but where I needed to be.

I found myself in front of his frontdoor, although he had scared me by
what had happened a few hours ago. But there something that made me want
to run back into his arms, although I knew he was dangerous. He was the
first one that didn't judged me because I was bullied and the first boy
ever that had called me beautiful. To me, he had become really important
and what had happened, didn't changed it much, only made me scared. I
rang the doorbell and held my arms around my body as I shivered. The
door remained closed and I sighed before standing on my tippy toes to
ring the doorbell again, but just before I reached the button, the door
opened and my feeling of wanting to be in his arms had disappeared. I
saw him looking at me, with wet hair and only a towel around his waist.
He smiled when he saw me and honestly, I wanted to run away but it was
too late now. I didn't smiled back and stood nailed on the floor.

"Can I come in?" I asked him quietly and looked him in the eyes for only
one second before looking down at my feet. I saw him stepping aside,
giving me room for entering, but I didn't.

"You have to say it.", I said as I did the same as Harry also had done
last night.

"You can come in.", Harry said with his husky voice. Only in my pj's and
not wearing make-up, I walked into his apartment and was surprised with
how empty it was. I frowned my eyebrows, as I looked around, and saw all
the windows were covered with carton which made it really dark in here.
When I heard the front-door closing, I snapped out of my gaze and turned
around to face Harry and tried not to focus on his half-naked body. I
looked down at my feet and closed my eyes as it remained quiet.

I took a deep breath before looking up. "What are you?" I asked him and
saw he looked down. "Really?" I added.

Harry breathed in deep and out. "I need blood," He said and pulled up
both his eyebrows, "to live." He whispered.

"How old are you?" I asked him quietly.

"Twenty." He answered as he looked up. "But I've been twenty for a very
long time."

I nodded. "Where's your dad?" I asked when I noticed he was gone and I
hadn't seen him.

"He wasn't my dad." Harry answered which was followed by a silence. I
wondered who he was then. I looked around and saw a few things on
the dinnertable. I slowly walked towards it. A lot of papers were lying
on it, but something caught my eye. I grabbed the sepia-colored photo
and saw Harry and another guy sitting, both smiling and their arms
around each others' shoulders. In the corner of the picture was written
'1942' and my breath hitched. I looked at the guy in the photo next to
Harry and narrowed my eyes when I saw he looked familiar. Then, a
flashback came of the man who I thought was Harry's father. The boy in
this picture and the man had the same smile and the same mole under
their left eye. I gasped and let the picture fall down on the table. I
looked over at Harry, to see him looking at me with his eyebrows frowned.

"I have to go." I quickly said and started walking to the frontdoor, but
Harry blocked it.

"I want to go." I snapped at him and he frowned his eyebrows more.

"What are you going to do with me?" I asked and narrowed my eyes at him.
"Going to suck all my blood out of my body until I die?" He looked at me
with an angry expression and slowly stepped aside, giving me space. I
opened the door and stepped outside his apartment. As fast as I could, I
walked towards my apartment and just before I opened the door, I heard
him whisper "I told you we couldn't be friends.". Honestly, that hurt. I
quickly walked back to my room and laid down on my bed as I forced
myself to calm down. I breathed in deep and out, repeating it and soon I
was breathing normal again. I looked at the wall next to me and felt the
tears threatening to fall.

"I'm sorry Harry." I whispered and laid my hand down on it, but somehow,
it felt like it was connected with anotherhand. Feeling a pressure
appearing on my chest, I hugged the duvet tight as I stared at the wall
again and soon, my eyesight had became blurry from all the tears that
were streaming down my face. After one hour, I finally cried myself to
sleep with fear and love going through my body.
