18. Chapter 16: ''Don't leave me.''

“I have good news and bad news.” The man said and sighed. “The good news
is that your mum woke up from coma. The bad news you'll see when you'll
come with me.” He said and looked at me. A pressure on my chest appeared
and I staggered out of the apartment.

“Don't you need to get dressed?” He asked and I looked down to see I was
wearing one of Harry's T-Shirt and nothing more.

“I'll be back in a few.” I mumbled and staggered back into the
apartment, holding on onto everything until I reached the bedroom. I
threw on the first pair of jeans that I saw and ignored the waves of
pain that were going through me. I wondered where Harry was since there
was no one else in the apartment but me. When I was ready, I didn't care
to put on a coat and carefully walked out of the apartment and closed
the door behind me.

“You okay?” The man asked.

“Yeah, it's just my back and my fingers.” I said and together we walked
towards the elevator.

“What happened?” I felt my heart skipping a beat and my hands getting

“I... fell.” I lied and avoided any eyecontact as we went down with the

“You sure about that?” The man asked and I nodded. The bell dinged and
the doors flung open, and together we walked past the playground towards
the parking area. Once we reached it, we walked towards a big black car
and he held the door open for me.

“Thanks.” I muttered, not being down to earth, only thinking about my
mum. He shut the door and sat down in the driverseat before starting the
engine and riding onto the road. While we drove, it was total silent and
couldn't stop thinking about my mum. I was wondering what the bad news
was. I felt the tears brimming in my eyes and swallowed the lump in my
throat away.

Why me? What have I ever done wrong? Why did my dad left us heartbroken
because of an other woman? Why did Kenny and his friend bully me? Why
did Harry suddenly appeared in my life and brought me so much drama,
almost killed me? And why did my mum landed in the hospital and almost died?

“Mrs. Moonsky, we're here.” A hand waved in front of my face and I
turned my head to look at the man. I unbuckled my seatbelt as I looked
out of the window. The big building I hated with my whole life, I was
scared for it to be honest and I had no clue why. I got out of the car
and followed the man into the building. Looking around, I saw people
smiling and crying. One girl ran towards her dad and he scooped her up
from the ground as he started crying, tears of joy. A couple was hugging
each other, while crying tears of sadness. Finally, we got into the
elevator and we went up the floors as I counted the numbers until it
reached the number 6. The bell dinged and the door flung open. The
hallway was empty apart from us as we walked until we reached a door.

“This is her room.” The man said and opened the door slowly. When it
opened far enough, I froze at what I saw.

There she was, lying on a hospitalbed, her hair going in all directions,
no color in her skin and when her eyes met mine, I noticed they weren't
as brown as they always were.

“Hey sweety.” Her voice sounded rouch, it wasn't much different than an
husky voice coming out of her mouth. Her voice with which she always
used to sing, used to talk and used to pray, had turned into one which
made me afraid, because it didn't sound like my mum. I saw small tubes
going into my mums skin and nostrils and my hands started to shake.

“Mum.” I managed to get out before I ran, which wasn't running but more
like almost falling down and trying to keep balance while holding every
object, towards her and tried to hug her as best as possibile, which was
hard because she was lying on the bed, but I didn't care, all I wanted
was to hold her tight and be here in the moment. Tears started to escape
my eyes when I smelled her familiar scent.

“Shh baby.” She cooed in my ear and stroke my hair. We both shot our
heads up when we heard a cough and saw the man standing in the
doorframe. I didn't care to pull away, I just wanted to hold my mum.

“The badnews...” The man trailed off and looked at my mum. I felt her
nodding her head before the man started to speak again, “is that we
can't do anything to keep her alive anymore.”

I froze immediatly and my eyes widened. Slowly, I pulled away from my
mum and looked at her, to see her looking at me with eyes full with
tears, and then to the man, who was looking at us with an apologic
facial expression. “What?” I asked quietly. “ But...how...”

“Because of the overdosis, there is too much chemical stuff in your
mum's body and it already affected her along with the alcohol which had
already caused damage to both brain and liver. We already cleaned her
stomach, but it is already spred through her whole body.” The man
explained and I looked at him, trying to find any signs of him lying,
but when I couldn't find one, I looked at my mum, but immediately knew
he clearly wasn't lying because of the tears streaming down her face
which broke me down again.

“That's not possible!” I yelled and looked at the man who looked at the
ground, shaking his head.

“I'm sorry, Mrs. Moonsky.” He said.

“There has to be something!” I yelled at the top of my lungs and stood
up, grabbing the sheets tight.

“I'm sorry. I'll leave you two alone.” The man said and walked out of
the room before I could even respond. When the door slammed shut, I
looked at my mum with anger rushing through me.

“Please tell me this is not true.” I pleaded her and looked right into
her eyes.

“I will lie if I do so.” She whispered and shut her eyes as she took a
deep breath. “I'm sorry.” She whispered and broke down in tears. She
covered her face in her hands and her shoulders shook by every cry that
escaped her mouth. I felt the anger fading away and being replaced with
sadness. I had never seen my mum like this. She never cried, she was the
one who could take critism, the one who could fight back and come up for
herself and others she loved, but it all changed when dad left for
another woman who he had met at work.

“Please lay next to me.” My mum whispered and removed her hands from her
face, revieling her red and puffy eyes which had bags under them. I
didn't hesitate, immediately took off my shoes and crawled next to her
in the bed. I placed the duvet over us again and she immediately wrapped
her arm around me as best as possible, since the little tubes that were
going into her couldn't make her move a lot. I swayed my arm around her
waist and pressed her forehead against mine.

“I love you.” My mum whispered and pecked me on the lips.

“I love you too.” I answered and crawled even more closer.

“I'm sorry for the last couple of months, I wish I could turn back
time.” Mum said and sighed as she shut her eyes.

“But we can't, we have to live with what we have.” I finished a quote
she used to say whenever I wanted something I couldn't get. She chuckled
in response.

“How is school doing?” She asked, changing the subject.

“Just as always.” I said and shrugged my shoulders.

“August can you please answer this question?”

I looked into her eyes, wondering what she was going to asked. “Sure.”

“How come you have so many bruises? Please answer me now, and don't lie
like you always do.” I swallowed and closed my eyes. I needed to tell
her, she deserves to know the truth and totally now at this moment.

“Kenny.” I whispered and opened my eyes again, to meet my mums.

“Did he do this to you?” I nodded.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“I was afraid.”

“Afraid of what?”

“Afraid that you wouldn't believe me, since you were always in those
moods.” I atmitted.

“I'm so sorry August you don't-” I cut my mum off by pushing my index
finger against her lips.

“Mum it's okay, we have to live with it, remember?” I said and slightly
smiled. I felt her hands brushing my hip, searching for mine and when it
finally did, her cold fingers interwined with mine.

“Any boys who came into your way?” She asked and I heard her breath
getting heavier and immediately tightened my grip on her hand.

“No.” I answered and sighed.

“C'mon August, don't lie!” Mum said and I looked up to see her smiling
at me. “Tell me, that boy with who you always hang out each night in the
playground and with who you went away that night.”

“Oh you mean Harry?” I asked her and raised an eyebrow.

“Is his name Harry? Sounds really good!” She winked. “Tell me more about

“Well, he has brown curls, green eyes and he is really tall. He is
really shy and doesn't likes to talk about himself and going out in
public. But he is really sweet and caring.” I rambeld on and felt a
smile growing bigger and bigger by every word I said.

“You really like him, don't you?” Mum said and wiggled her eyebrows. I
heard there was getting more water in her mouth and she couldn't swallow
it all at the same time away.

“No I really don't in that way, I think. And even if I did, I bet he
wouldn't feel the same towards me.” I said and felt like I got stabbed
in my heart for some reason.

“That's definitly not true, I've seen him, the way he looks at you with
those eyes and that facial expression, he's totally into you!” Mum

“Mum he's not.” I said and rolled my eyes.

“That's what you think, but I'm sure I am right.” Mum said and chuckled,
but stopped when she started to cough, spitting saliva on the pillow. I
sat up and reached over the nightstand. I grabbed one of the tissues and
wiped her mouth clean.

“I'm sorry.” She apologized and looked down.

“It's okay mum.” I reassured her and cleaned the pillow too before
turning it over so our heads were lying on the clean side of it.

“But why doesn't he likes going out in public and doesn't talk about
himself?” Mum questioned once I had laid back down. I thought for a
moment, thinking if I could tell her or not and honestly, I really
wanted it.

“Mum, you know about those murders going on right now?” I asked her and
she nodded.

“Well, please don't be mad at me, I don't know why I stayed around him
although I knew I wasn't safe around him, but Harry is the murder.” I
said and closed my eyes.

“What do you mean?” Mum asked.

“Have you also heard that every victim has a bite print in their neck?”
I asked her, ignoring her question.

“Yeah a police officer told me once when you were on school but-”

“Mum Harry is a vampire.” I said quietly and shut my eyes.

“What?” She asked, astonished.

“I'm not lying, I'm really not. He even also bit me, but didn't for some
reason, he told me because he knew it was me and he couldn't do that to
me.” I said and looked into her eyes.

“I thought they were a mythe.” She whispered and knotted her eyebrows,
signalling she was thinking.

“I thought so too.” I atmitted and it stayed quiet for a few moments,
until she moved closer and whispered in my ear, “It doesn't matter what
he is, he's a keeper.”

For some reason, I froze immediately and thought back at all the
moments. The moment we met where he told me we couldn't be friends, the
moment we were talking about the rubiks cube, the moment, the moment we
had been sitting on the bench and talked about ourselves and the rubik's
cube, the moment he told me to hit Kenny back and I did as he said, the
moment he went into my room at night and told me I was beautiful, the
moment we went to the fair in the town, the moment he almost kissed me,
the moment he almost bit me but ran off, the moment I didn't invite him
in and he started bleeding, the moment he locked me in his room, the
moment he told me about his past, the moment he was trying to feed me
and to convince me for not being fat, the moment he warned me when I was
on my period, the moment he had laid me in bed after he found me numb in
the shower.

It all fitted for some reason, it all told the story that he was a true
friend, and that we had ups and downs, but managed to get through them

I snapped out of my thoughts when I heard my mums breath getting heavier
and heavier and sometimes, husky voice were coming out of her mouth.

“Please mum, stay here. Don't leave me.” I whispered and grabbed her
neck, pulling her even closer to me.

“August I'm so sorry.” She whispered and pecked me on the lips again,
her lips were wet from the saliva that was escaping her mouth, since she
didn't had the strength to swallow it away. I felt hot tears starting to
run down my cheeks and my heart falling to the pit of my stomach.

Now she cut me off, “August, listen to me really good and be sure not to
miss any word I'm going to say. You're the sweetest, bravest, nicest,
most quite, most beautiful, sometimes annoying, but hey that is normal,
smartest girl on earth, and I'm not saying this because I'm your mum.
You deserve to be loved and although you've have had a horrible time at
school,” She stopped and coughed and I reached over the nightstand and
swiped the liquied away again. “I'm sure and I promise that means a
really good time is coming soon. Everything happens for a reason.
August, I'm not lying when I say that you're the best daughter a mother
can get.” She whispered and together, we stayed silent while the tears
were running down our cheeks as we were enjoying each others presence. I
felt the grib of her arm loosening and her eyes almost closing.

“It's fine mum, you don't need to fight anymore. I will never forget you
and I'm sure God will be there above with wide arms, waiting for you to
come. You're the best mother a daughter and son could wish for.” I said
sniffling and tightened my grip around her, while hers loosened.

“Don't forget a word I've said.” Mum whispered with a husky voice.

“I won't, never.” I answered and saw the tears stop with escaping out of
her eyes.

“Please, stay strong, for me?” She asked and opened her eyes a little
bit more, so they were open in their normal position.

“I will, I promise.” I answered her and pushed her forehead against mine

“I love you forever.” She whispered as her eyes closed and her chest
rose up and down very slowly.

“I love you too.” I whispered before I heard the monitor stopping with
beeping, but turning into one deafmaking beep.
