2. Chapter 1 ''We can't be friends.''

"Morning mum." I greeted her as I walked into the kitchen after getting
ready for school.

"Goodmorning August." She greeted back while cooking.

"What are you cooking?" I asked and went over to stand next to her.

"Bacon and eggs." She answered and put her long brown hair in a messy
bun before returning to the breakfast.

"Sounds good.", I said and walked away to sit down on the chair in front
of the dinner table. Mum walked over to a drawer and grabbed something
out it. She swallowed a pill down her throat and my eyes widened.

"Mum you need to stop right now!" I yelled as I jumped up and ran over
to her to grab the medications.

"But I need them.", She said with tears in her brown eyes.

"I know, but not this much." I explained and held the little box in
front of my face. "One pill a day will help reduce pain and depressing."
I read out loud what was stood on the back of it before looking back
into the eyes of my mother. "And you take more than one per day." I
stated, but the little box was grasped out of my hands as my mother
looked at me with anger written on her face.

"Breakfast is ready." She snarled in a whisper, changing the subject. We
both sat down and intertwined our own hands into each other. I leaned
my forehead on them and closed my eyes.

"May Lord protect us from anything /evil/. Amen." My mum said quietly
and when she was finished, we both started eating our breakfast.

When we were done, I got up and grabbed my back. I walked to the hallway
and put my coat on.

"Bye mum!" I shouted and put my pink scarf around my neck.

"Have fun on school!" She yelled back.

"I will!" I lied as I answered and walked out of our apartment. When I
closed the door, I looked over at the front door next to ours. When I
went to bed yesterday, I couldn't stop thinking about that boy. There
was something about him, something that made him different, but
I couldn't figure out what. I walked down the hallway and into the
elevator. As it went down, I quietly hummed a song.

The bell dinged and the doors flung open, causing the cold air to hit my
cheeks. Chills appeared and I quickly dug my head more in my scarf. I
walked past the little playground where I always liked to sit on the
bench in the evenings and which was surrounded by all the other flat
buildings. But I stopped when I saw footsteps printed in the snow. They
walked from the parking area to the entrance of our building and you
could perfectly see that that person who had made them, wasn't wearing
shoes at that moment. I looked up at the apartment next to mine. The
windows were covered with carton, which made it impossible to look into
the apartment. I frowned my eyebrows, trying to think up a reason why. I
shrugged it off again and continued my walk to school, or how I like to
call it: hell.

"Kenny please, stop." I whispered with tears in my eyes as he was
looking down at me with his famous smirk.

"You're lucky I'm done with you for now baby." He said in an evil one
and pushed me against the lockers before walking away with his friends.
I brushed the tears away with the sleeve of my hoodie and quickly walked
down the hallway to the exit. It was hard, trying to ignore all the
horrible comments and all the death glares which were thrown at me, but
I succeeded and walked out of the school-gates.

By every step I took, the snow squeezed under my feet as they drowned in
it. The cold air brushed my cheeks and I pulled my beanie on my head,
giving it a bit more warmth. The way home wasn't long because after
five minutes, I already reached the flat buildings. I walked past the
playground again and grabbed the keys out of my pocket. I opened the
door to the staircase and ran to the second floor, where all the
apartments were of this flat building. The hallway was dead, just like
it always was. I sighed before twitching my key in my front door.

"Why are you this late?" I walked into the living room and plopped down
on the couch.

"Did my homework at school." I explained and sat down on my knees so I
could see her in the kitchen.

"I'm going to bed.", She said and put the bottle of beer down on the
counter. "You have to make yourself dinner. I'm sorry, but I'm really
tired." And with that, she disappeared into the hallway and I heard
her bedroom door closing. I sighed and got up from the couch. I walked
into the kitchen and grabbed a pizza out of the freezer. Then, I put it
in the microwave and turned it on. With the remote control
I put the TV on and zapped to a music-channel. I made myself a cup of
tea and sat down on the couch watching videoclips of the Top 40
until the microwave beeped, signalling that the pizza was done.

"You like that? No you don't, I know. But this is how I feel every day!"
I yelled to the tree and hit it with my balled fist. I closed my eyes
and winced in pain when they came in contact. I wasn't expecting that
the tree would be that hard.

"What are you doing?" A husky voice said, causing me to stand still
immediately. I slowly turned my head and looked over my shoulder to the
white stuff which covered the ground before looking up. Again, he was
only wearing shorts and a T-shirt. With no shoes or anything else, he
stood there in the snow watching me with an expressionless face.

"N-Nothing." I stuttered out. "What are you doing?"

He shrugged and took a step forward, "Nothing."

"You just moved in, isn't it?" I asked and turned my whole body so I
could face him completely.

"How do you know?" He said as he pulled up one eyebrow.

"I live next door to you." I explained. He nodded and took one step
forward again.

"Just so you know, we can't be friends.", He said and looked me right in
the eyes.

I frowned my eyebrows, creating a confused look on my face. "Why not?"

"That's just the way it is." The boy said and shrugged his shoulders
again. I turned around, facing the tree again. I didn't knew what he
meant nor knew something to say. What he said was confusing and making
my head fill up with questions, which I didn't dare to ask for some reason.

"Who has ever said I wanted to be friends with you?" I raised my voice a
bit and turned around, only to find that he was gone.
