Friend Zoned

Kylie and Liam have been best friends since pre-school. They’ve faced all challenges together, and high school was the biggest challenge yet. Kylie had become a socialite; became everyone’s best friend. Every girl wanted to be her, and every guy wanted to be her boyfriend. Liam had ended up on the other side of the school’s spectrum. He had very little friends that he could trust. What happens when one event affects their relationship as friends? Could it bloom into something more, or will their friendship stay the same?

2. The Invitation

One week until homecoming and some students were scrambling to get dates. The guys and I were sitting at lunch while watching guys fail to ask one of the cheerleaders to homecoming. It was very entertaining.

“Liam, have you thought about asking Kylie to homecoming?” Louis asked. Yes, I have thought about it. Will I ask her? I don’t think I have the courage to. “She wouldn’t go with someone like me.” I said as I began to eat my lunch.

“You two are like friends so it wouldn’t matter.” Harry said.

“Who are you asking to homecoming Harry?” Louis asked. Harry smiled, glancing over at the cheerleaders. He waved at one of them and she waved back. “Jennifer.” That was his only reply. Jennifer was one of the girls who got in because she could easily do the combination, but we all knew how many guys she slept with this past summer - including Zayn.

She and Harry were perfect for each other. “Hey Niall, maybe you should go ask Erin or that girl in your science class.” Zayn suggested. The girl in Niall’s science class, I heard, was a beautiful girl from Spain. Her name was Isabella.

“I couldn’t go up to both of them if I tried.” Niall said.

“Who are you asking to homecoming Louis?” I asked Louis who had turned his attention away from our table. He looked back at me to answer my question. “I have someone in mind.” he replied, then looked away again.

The bell rang once again and we all went our separate ways. When the last bell signaling our last class was over, “Liam!” I turned around saw Kylie walking down the hallway towards my direction. “I’ve been meaning to talk to you, but you walked out so fast after Spanish, I couldn’t keep up.” she said.

“What’s up?” I asked her.

“Well, you know my birthday’s coming up in two weeks and I want you to come.” she smiled, handing me an invitation. “I made it especially for you.”

“What about all the other people you’re going to invite?” I asked.

“Liam, I’m not going to invite the whole school. It’s going to be you and me.” she smiled. “I haven’t had a best friend date since middle school. Please say you’ll go.”

“I’ll think about it.” I said. She wrapped her arms around me, pulling me into a hug. “Thank you!” She kissed my cheek and then walked away as I stared after her. “Ready to go?” Niall asked, but I didn’t hear him. Kylie kissed my cheek, and she’s never done that before. “Liam, dude, snap out of it.” Niall said.

“What?” I asked, looking at him.

“What’s that in your hand?” Niall motioned towards the card in my hand and I shrugged. “Just an invite to a party. Nothing per--Hey!” Niall grabbed the card from my hand and opened it. “Kylie invited you to a party? Her... party?”

He handed me back the card as we turned and walked towards the school parking lot. “Why do you say like it’s a big deal?” I asked him.

“This is Kylie we’re talking about. You know she throws one of the biggest parties in the entire school.” he said.

“She doesn’t have those parties until school gets out.” I said. Niall looked at me once we reached my car. “Okay, she has parties like those at least once or twice a month. This is not one of them.”

“How do you know that?” Niall asked. Truth is, how did I know that this wasn’t just some scam to get me to go to her house while Kylie had her party somewhere else? How did I know that Kylie actually wants to have a best friend date?

I have to confront her about this, but when?
