Friend Zoned

Kylie and Liam have been best friends since pre-school. They’ve faced all challenges together, and high school was the biggest challenge yet. Kylie had become a socialite; became everyone’s best friend. Every girl wanted to be her, and every guy wanted to be her boyfriend. Liam had ended up on the other side of the school’s spectrum. He had very little friends that he could trust. What happens when one event affects their relationship as friends? Could it bloom into something more, or will their friendship stay the same?

3. Homecoming

"Liam, did you think it over?" Kylie asked me. I opened up my locker to take out my English book. "About that," I said with a pause, closing the locker and turning to her. "You're not planning another party, are you? I mean, you always plan these huge parties that everyone goes to and you forget about me."

Kylie looked at me with a confused look. "You know I'd never do that to you." she said. "I gave you an invitation because I really do want us to have a best friend date. We can do anything that you want. We can go out for ice cream, have a movie night, and there would be no interruptions."

I wanted to believe her, but we haven't been exactly close since middle school. "Please Liam, don't break my heart." she said, wrapping her arms around me and hugged me. She always knew me weaknesses, and sometimes I hated her for knowing them. "Okay." I said.

She pulled away and smiled, "Great. I'll see you that Saturday." She walked away as I leaned against my locker and sighed. I always found myself constantly falling for her charms.

"Did you talk to her?" Niall asked while in English class. "Yeah." I said.

"What did she say?" Zayn asked.

"She said that she's not throwing one of her big parties." I answered. Both Niall and Zayn shook their heads at me. "You do know she's just messing with you." Zayn said.

"What are you talking about?" I asked. Now I was confused. What did Zayn and Niall know about Kylie? What did they know that I didn't know? "Kylie's known to play with people's emotions. She knows how to get what she wants." Zayn said.

"It's obvious that you're wrapped around her finger." Niall said.

"I am not." I said.

"That's what I said." Zayn told me. Kylie had broken up with Zayn because she had seen him with another girl. It was a typical high school break up. "Liam, you can't let Kylie run your life. You need to get out of the friend zone. We all know that's all she's ever going to see you as." Niall said.

During lunch, Kylie walked up to our table and dropped her notebook in front of me. "Can you write down the notes for me for Spanish class? I'm leaving for a competition today." she smiled. I looked at her notebook, then at the guys who all exchanged looks with me, and then up at her.

"Sure." I said.

"Thanks Liam." she smiled, then walked away. The guys rolled their eyes, shaking their heads at me. "You are in too deep." Harry said.

"But I've always done this for her." I said.

"That's the problem. You are willing to do anything for her, no matter what. Those are the qualities of the guy being in the friend zone. You are going to have to change that." Zayn said.

"What do I do?" I asked.

"We are going to help you. We're going to transform you into the guy she wants, and maybe she'll fall in love with you." Louis smiled. I didn't like where this was going, but my life was now in the hands of my friends.

Homecoming came around and we parked in the parking lot located outside the entrance of the school. The guys and I walked towards the school to the gym - where homecoming was being held. As soon as we entered the gym, I spotted Kylie talking with her friends.

"Liam, I didn't know you were planning on going to homecoming." Kylie said after walking up to greet me. "I thought you would stay home and do homework."

"I might as well have fun with my date." I said.

"Who's your date?" she asked, confused. Michaela, another cheerleader, walked up and I wrapped my arm around her shoulders. "You know Michaela?" I asked her. Kylie looked at Michaela, slowly nodding her head.

"C'mon Liam, let's dance." Michaela smiled, leading me away from Kylie and we began to dance. After a few fast songs, homecoming king and queen had to be announced. Zayn was king and Kylie was queen - obviously. The two of them shared a slow dance together.

The slow dance ended and everyone went back to dancing. While dancing with Michaela, I could see Kylie walking out of the gym. It was hard to resist my urge to follow her. When I couldn't take it anymore, I walked out of the gym and saw Kylie sitting on the bench across from the gym.

I walked over to her and sat down. "Hey." I said. She looked at me and said, "Hey." She was wearing a beautiful dress and even in this light she was so beautiful. "Let's ditch this place and get some ice cream." she smiled.

"Kylie," I paused.

"What is it?" she asked me.

I shook my head. "Never mind. It's a stupid idea." I said. She placed a hand on my hand as I looked down for a second, then looked at her. "Tell me Liam. If this is about the party invitation, I understand if you can't go." she said.

"It has nothing to do with the party invite." I said.

"What is this about?" she asked.

"I... I have to go." I got up and walked out of the school. I went to my car and got in, sitting in the driver's seat. I couldn't fess up my feelings to her now. She would never believe me, or laugh. I was stuck in the friend zone... for now. All I needed was a reason to get out, but how am I going to tell her how I feel about her? When?

Then it hit me. Prom.
