5. The Circle

We are all standing in a circle, holding hands. Oddly, Sirena is on my right and Fuoco on my left. What are we doing?

Then I feel Sirena gently nudge me and we all start walking round in a clockwise direction.

"Repeat after me." I hear Fuoco urge. "Thanks be, the mother of all things,"

We all repeat. "Thanks be, the mother of all things,"

"The goddess of life,"

"The goddess of life,"

"Thanks be, the father of all things,"

"Thanks be, the father of all things,"

"The god of life,"

"The god of life,"

"Thanks be for all we have,"

"Thanks be for all we have,"

"Thanks be for our new lives,"

"Thanks be for our new lives,"

"Blessed be."

"Blessed be."

I suddenly felt a huge warmth surge through me and we all threw our hands up. Then, I collapsed on the forest floor, my fall softened by the leaves. My head felt suddenly heavy, my fingers tingled and as if by magic the fire suddenly went out, leaving everybody screaming in the dark. Fuoco and Sirena knelt down beside me and I felt them both lowering my forehead to the ground and the pain dissolved. I caught a glimpse of them giving each a look as if this was a good thing!

I stood up. " What just happened?" It wasn't just me asking that question.

Sirena answered. "Quercia is sensitive to the circle and generated too much power. We'll have to be more careful in the future." She then explained to the confused faces that a circle is a Pagan ritual of sorts and that is doesn't mean we are now all Pagan witches. That seemed to calm a few people down, including me. As if on cue, everybody started to leave.

" But... how do we get back up?" I asked, just as I noticed people disappearing through a tunnel.

Fuoco smiled. " I hope you're not scared of the dark."

I was suddenly worried. "Why?" He must have noticed how unsure I was because he laughed, although not mockingly.

"Just don't worry." He suddenly bent down and scooped me up as if I weighed nothing. One arm supporting my back and the other holding my legs. I closed my eyes as we plunged into the dark...
